Even though you put it the wrong way around the wheel all you need to do is remove the spring from the motor and you can put the belt on with your hand then just put the spring back on

No wonder you found it tight to get on, you have routed it wrong over the pulley. The belt on left side should pass over top of pulley then around the motor shaft. Your belt is rubbing on a plastic part to the left.
