Many moons ago, when I first envisioned this series, two words stuck out in my mind: "Channel. Awesome." I've spent well over a year planning the Fallen Titans series, and the entire time I've kept it in my mind that a cornerstone of this was going to be discussing Thatguywiththeglasses and what happened to it. As recently as five days ago, I planned for the Channel Awesome Fallen Titans to serve as the finale. But, given the recent revelations about the conditions behind the scenes, I chose to move it up in the schedule. E n j o y ?

Whoa. As a fifteen year old who basically had a shrine to the Nostalgia Critic (i'm kidding), seeing this is genuinely heartbreaking and to see the the level of ego and narcissism from Doug, Rob, and especially mike who up until this point I dint even know who he was its saddening to see that this went on behind the scenes. Sorry that you received that type of abuse from Doug, abuse that is basically indefensible is one again heartbreaking. I'm sounding like a broken record, and as a former fan as of today I dont know what to say. Keep up the good work by the way. : )

I caught that livestream with contrapoints where you mentioned that you'd never work with him again. I kind of thought that doug might be a bit amateur, given I'd watched some of those anniversary movies when I was a teenager. But holy shit when I read through that google document I cringed so hard it was unbelievable.

So what you're saying is, the Nostalgia Critic, a channel based on re-examining things you loved when you were younger and finding out that they were actually terrible....turned out to be a thing you loved when you were younger but, on later re-examination, was actually terrible? *Ironic*

Even before this whole debacle, I tried to go back to old reviews and my god, I wanted to rip my eyes out. How did we ever tolerate that amount of cringe? It's a shame, I feel like Malcolm and Tamara are quite good at their job, but anything that comes out of Doug's mouth is just painful. I don't know how he manages to cram all that pretentiousness into every single word he speaks.

Honestly, I used to enjoy watching the Nostalgia Critic videos, especially The Room video. Around at some point around 2016, the show began to feel not as good, but there were still some upsides. However, ever since the Deadpool 2 “review”, I stopped watching the Nostalgia Critic. Doug seemed to no longer care about what he used to be. To be fair, though, looking back at most of his videos, including the Sailor Moon and Ernest Saves Christmas reviews, Doug’s content hasn’t seemed to age that well.

@Zalkat Almosen You have to remember that KZfaq was a very barren place in terms of consistent content with a budget in the early years. AVGN was the definitely the more talented of the two “angry reviewers” but movies are more accessible to the average viewer than video games. And pushing the nostalgia angle was a big draw. I think there is a slight charm to it to see how far we’ve come but the allegations have pretty much put me off watching anything made by Doug ever again.

He never treated other's characters with respect in any of the anniversary movies, making them act the way he wanted as opposed to what was in character for them. There was a strange amount of irony in that review, with Doug Walker complaining about the movie being too pretentious and egotistical...When in real life, Doug has gone through a similar downward spiral that is experienced through the movie. I don't think he ever will. Doug's built up a popular brand that regularly gets high view counts over years of work that shaped the very reviewer landscape over the internet and if he speaks out then the guys in charge will just take that brand from him. Sure, he could go into another format for reviews and start over, but that didn't turn out so well with Demo Reel.... It's not something people like to hear, but very few people can just let that much success go and take that huge of a risk for other people when they, themself, are in a good place with their own work. If I was in that position, I wouldn't speak up, either, and I think the same would go for most people out there as well. It's legitimately hard to work for that long to get to a good place only to give it up to please other people.

I find these Fallen Titans videos so fascinating because they really are short, modern history lessons. People forget quickly, especially on the internet and since I doubt the History Channel will ever bring up internet phenomena like this, I think there is a very big value in cataloging the happenings on the internet for the future like this. Because memories and knowledge fades, which is why historical science even exists. So Fallen Titans, and things like Down the Rabbit Hole are really sort of preparing for the future. Who knows, maybe in 50 years, internet history will be just as mainstream and accepted as classic history and so these kinds of videos are very important.

I have to remind myself to separate a creator from their creation. Maybe I love a song, but the singer has done bad thing or just expressed views and committed actions that I disagree with, in that scenario I must mentally separate the two. It's okay to still love the song and enjoy what the lyrics meant to me. The biggest and hardest part is to learn to stop "checking up" on the creator; they are not what I love. They are not their work or the thing that meant so much to me. My feeling on the creator on the person can be different than my feeling about their work. If a creator does something I do not agree with, I do not buy anything new from them. I don't wish to support that person. Yet I also make a point of not forcing myself to give up their creation. I regard it and its meaning to me in the same state in my mind as when I first enjoyed it. Not even the creator has the right to take away something I love and all the experiences it has given me.

One thing I'll say about the crossover movies is that they really, REALLY stink of Doug Walker. The writing, the directing, the editing, sense of humor, timing... everything is exactly what Doug Walker does. And that is why they don't really work as well as they could. They lack the creative freedom for other people and are basically glorified Nostalgia Critic skits. With that and all the other stuff, it seems like he is truly just someone who can only see his point of view and refuses to change anything because it's not what he wants. The movie where he becomes a dictator is probably the closest to reality out of their movies.

I remember hearing someone say that when you're the director of a movie, and I would argue in any creative pursuit that involves the contribution of multiple people, you're lucky if you get 80% of your original vision onscreen. I think someone needs to tell Doug that because he genuinely seems to think only the director matters. Come to think of it, that also would explain him calling out the directors by name and blaming them specifically if a movie is bad... does he think this is just how the industry works?

Lewis Lovhaug (Linkara) is the one that I think managed to walk out of there looking the best and brightest. The guy stuck around in a legitimate attempt to salvage channel awesome as best he could and judging by his inputs to both the google doc as well as his anecdotes about the issue on Twitter (which Lindsay all but confirmed were true), he basically became Channel Awesome's one-man HR department and councilor. He did his best to keep people in the loop when things were being planned, helped keep people's tempers from blowing up too much, and extended invitations when and where he could so everyone stayed involved. The fact that his channel announced an audio drama that is basically what the anniversary movies were but with pretty much everyone involved being excited for it tells me he should have been the one calling the shots for Channel Awesome because he actually freaking cares about the people he works with.

I really hate how Brad Jones underminded the mistreatments and harassments of everyone as pointless drama or people not getting Applebee's on the set of To Boldly Flee. There was quite a bit in the document that was more than just not getting food on the sets of their movies. It was anything but petty anger and the idea that he just laughed off what they went through as 'Internet drama' when some of them had legitimate grievances with the company is nothing short of frustrating.

Hey Quinton, I was just wondering: are you planning to talk about Onision as part of your Fallen Titans series? I remember years ago, I actually tried to follow all that wretched drama that unfolded on his channel, and I still don't completely understand what happened. It'd be great to have a fresh perspective on what happened to one of the most bizarre KZfaq stars I've ever seen...it'd give me some closure on that strange chapter in my life.

the fact remains that Doug and Rob have done nothing wrong. nothing good has come from this "change the channel" nonsense. all that's happened is a bunch of disgruntled former employees have gotten a bunch of people angry at the wrong people. instead of listening to a bunch of people who want revenge, it makes more sense to listen to the people who work there NOW, like walter, Malcom, and tamara. all of whom are having the worst week of their lives because of stuff that allegedly happened years ago. people want channel awesome to just bend over and apologize, and won't even give them the chance to defend themselves and tell their side of the story. they're automatically the bad guys. in the end, none of this is anyone's business except the people involved. anyone in the comments acting like they're entitled to an apology, I only have this to say: you should be ashamed of yourselves.

13:01 Having now actually taken a film production course and completed a 7.5 minute documentary short, I can't imagine what filming To Boldy Flee would have been like. My partner and I shot roughly, 4-5 hours of footage over the course of two days, cut it down to 30 minutes of usable footage, then spent 20+ hours to edit it into the final product. By the end of that process, we were beat to hell. The idea of shooting 18 hour days for a week straight is absurd. Knowing how so many of the content creators I adore were treated, I'm really glad I never watched any of the crossover specials.
@christopherb501

Do watch (rather, listen to) the recent one, A Voice From The Dark, made outside of CA, that reunited many contributors and several that never got a chance to crossover. It's a very solid story, it's great to hear from them all again, and it's completely devoid of all of CA's hallmarks.
@MinimiMax
@MinimiMax 4 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest mistake they made with all of their movies is the scheduling. They chose one week where they could get all the people together and then filmed everything during that one week. In one of their movies, they basically lost a full day of shooting because it rained the whole day and like 90% of the movie took place outside so they had even less time to do that one.

This confirms to me that Doug has completely mismanaged his career. The guy was a pioneer in internet content, he should have his own channel with 2M+ subs minimum and dipped his toes in some movies. He didn't need dozens of irrelevant creators similar to him. At most 2 or 3 people helping his stuff run. James Rolfe has done exactly that and with virtually 0 controversy.
@NomastiAfricanWarlord
@NomastiAfricanWarlord 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely mismanaged. The smartest thing he did with Nostalgia critic was not tying it to movies from his childhood (I mean that was a limited market that only becomes increasingly more limited as time goes on). Doug has tried various other projects and stuff but most of them have not really worked out well. Which is fair, success is paved with failure, but honestly it would have been better if he was a bit more conservative with his business. Then again I don't know all the behind-the-scene details that happened with him so who knows.

I still watch Todd's videos whenever they come out; his One Hit Wonderland series in particular is very well done. Rap Critic was the channel that first got me into hip hop way back in 2014, and I was a huge fan of his videos for a while-- I even got to meet him at a Run The Jewels concert. At this point, though, I can't watch his videos. He's become extremely close-minded and seems to shit on anything that doesn't adhere to his very strict qualifications of what makes for good hip hop. I'd also note that Kyle Kallgren's content since leaving the site is stellar. I'd definitely list him as one of my favorite KZfaqrs.

Matthew Forbes Most of the people he shits on tend to lack the lyrical ability. You may call that pushing the genre forward, but that's a big part of hip hop. You can still work in the style of many of the mumble rappers while still being very lyrical and many young emcees prove that and I don't see him not being open to their ideas.

Jesus Christ, I never fully absorbed that To Boldly Flee had a total runtime of FOUR HOURS. Four hours!? How much could possibly happen to a man who screams at 90's childrens movies in an audibly unfurnished, empty room? Does the premise of "awkward nerd complains about thing" really have so much narrative conflict and unanswered questions that whatever misadventure they got themselves into in a field near Doug's house couldn't be resolved in fewer steps than The Fellowship of the Ring? "Guys I understand the Teenage Mutant Ninja Dork or whatever just collapsed from dehydration, but if people just go get water all willy-nilly we'll never have enough time to shoot the 45-mintue Gremlins reference and the rape scene before Wendell64's mom has to pick him up for school on Monday. Channel Awesome used to be one of my favourites back in the day. Despite the fact that I haven't watched Doug in quite some time (Nostalgia Critic devolved into unfunny skits and Doug screaming nonsense at the camera) watching all this unfold is weirdly heart breaking, in a way. Doug was one of the first KZfaqrs I ever followed, and through him i discovered Cinema Snob, Linkara, Nostalgia Chick, Film Brain, Obscurus Lupa etc. I remember being excited for all of their yearly movies. It's like watching a Kevin Spacey movie. I'll always look back on the old TGWTG content with fondness, but it's going to be hard to still see them the same way knowing all this BTS drama, especially the movies. I think the thing that bums me out the most about it is that originally with the movies I always just assumed the whole thing was driven by people goofing around doing what they love, even if it was just objectively silly, I always assumed that it was all in good fun. It all does fall into a much different light when you find out that it was all just apparently a big ego trip for Doug.

Honestly, I haven’t watched it but after watching enough clips and rewatching this and a recap and recontextualizing with him reading the whole Not Awesome doc (thanks Cinematic Venom) the clips of Doug screaming about copyright and the “where’s the fair use” shit really rub me the wrong way because now I see a whole different man than I did when this video first dropped.

@@sarahperkins3816 for 39 minutes he bashes on the 1982 movie (based off the album), misinterpreting the meanings of the original songs and saying just "meh, it's okay" in the last 30 seconds. Plus, he has a feature of Corey Taylor (the lead singer of Slipknot) but he sings all the songs himself.
