what some fraudster try to do is get a form of legal consent. So at the very least it is contestable. Proving deception can be complicated if the elderly person is managing their own affairs and were convinced to do something.

One of my family members was scammed out of about £400,000 and they aren’t elderly. It’s actually a bit easier to intervene when it’s an elderly person as they’re deemed vulnerable and there are protocols in place to help them. If the person is younger and considered to be of sound mind, there is very little you can do if they’ve been taken in by these criminals. I wish more could be done to catch these people but because of the internet, it’s so easy for them to hide behind VPNs, spoof numbers and operate from anywhere in the world.

I lasted less than two weeks at a telesales charity fundraising company. They fired me because I wouldn't push old people to donate after so many of them were so anguished about getting up to literally 50 such calls a day. I was apologising for bothering them and then deleting their number off the system. You're not supposed to do that unless they specifically ask you to. I'd advise them that legally any "legit" company like the one I worked for has to strike off your number if you ask so if they got calls from anybody else they should request to be deleted. Also, if you say don't call me again and the company do they'll get in serious trouble. The company got into trouble after it was featured on a channel 4 docu for its bad practices and was fortunately liquidated in 2016.

I assume the son had power of attorney. However, acquiring POA can be tricky sometimes, as it has to be approached when the person still has their wits about them and has a grasp of what is happening. In my case, broaching the subject with my mother in the early stages of dementia, enough that it aroused suspicion in her, she thought I was stealing her savings. I was never able to resolve that, which led to all kinds of hassle by the bank and social services afterwards.

Me, I am an inner city rat when it comes to being street smart, but our elders just want to be allowed to live the rest of their lives out without having people think they are easy targets for scams. The sentences for scamming should ALWAYS be custodial, ranging in length from 6 months for lesser offences, right up to over 10 years for those caught scamming the elderly and vulnerable. Why on earth didn't the police play out the scenario where the crook, in this case, named Paul had an appointment booked with the lady at 4pm to sell the house, he would have been caught & banged to rights in the act.no wonder the police never catch anyone!

Scammers are literally kids or gangs behind phone lines with no life, don't care about their actions, ambitions and have no family. Just greedy scum who need to fill a void in their miserable life.

There is a fine line between a 'scam' and just efficient selling/marketing of a product that one may or may not deem as good 'value' for the customer. I mean insurance is a good example, you're never going to profit long-term from taking out insurance. It is their to make profit for the company offering it, and for the buyer it gives piece of mind and reduces life's volatility, so may be worth it for that. No one calls insurance salesmen 'scammers', (well, rarely). People are jumping on the side of the elderly person and the relative and demonising the sales person just because of how this story has been portrayed. The thing is, his job is sales. He is going to try to sell his product. Which in this case I presume is the freeing up of capital in a property, by purchasing the property at a price the company can profit from. His commission is reliant on sales. Whether or not someone is ethically or morally capable of making an objective decision about their assets is largely subjective and open to interpretation. Providing they're offering money for her house, what he did is not illegal. Unethical maybe. That depends on your perspective. But the son is probably most angry because it'd mean he gets less inheritance.

No, if my mum was 94 and had a cognitive impairment, I'd get pretty pissed of at anyone trying to get her to make a life changing financial decision. The same way that if you are 94 and in hospital and say 'I want to go home to see my mum' it is unethical to say, okay, I'll help you pack your bags. Yes, people sell things, but the same way they have a duty to make sure they aren't giving loans to people who can't afford the repayments, they also have a duty to make sure someone is capable of making a decision. Handing over bank details over the phone, after one phone call, for the sale of a house, from a 94yo. That's clearly not taking enough precautions. Which is why it is a scammer rather than good sales.

ime not sure the intention for the scammer was ever to scam for the house more likely they are just trying to gain confidence with the victim to get access to the building. this could very well have ended with a break in and murder of an elderly persons in the papers bloody scary stuff. our elders come from a trusting and honest generation and dont understands the dangers that our out there today. humans are vile creatures.

The reason why the officer hasn't caught any scammers is because, the words out of his own mouth "its not a criminal offence" you've got to be absolutely kidding me...if that happened to him he'd be on them like shit to a shovel so why would this case be any different

When my mum at age 84 was not safe by herself due to her advanced dementia.....I 'left' my home and husband and moved in with her......yes it was a challenge BUT I can sleep at night knowing I was there for her when she was at her most vulnerable....my husband visited every weekend...did the shopping and cut the lawn LOL....My mum passed away aged 89 with me stroking her hand and telling her what a wonderful mum she was to raise 8 kids....Where have we gone wrong when the elderly at their most vulnerable after delivering so much....are left alone!!!

@@scottchegg828, if there is no incentive to innovate under communism, how did the USSR go from being a backward agricultural nation to beating the best military in the world (the Nazis) and beating the US in the space race within a few decades? Also, it's worth mentioning that the technology used for our modern devices such as the iPhone didn't come from capitalism but actually came from technology developed by Government funding. Capitalism is too short sighted to fund the innovation needed for large technological leaps, they just take the Government funded research and turn it into a commercial product for profit.
