One Velazquez that brings this to mind is the portrait of Cardinal Camillo Massimi: it resisted my attempt to think of it ever *being made* and at the same time it didn't seem photographic. This may explain the scrutiny and finesse that Freud's later work possesses: there is no benefit to close proximity because they are painted to be at their most convincing at a certain distance. In extreme close up they remain elusive, so that one might as well be scrutinizing the palette or--in his case and Bacon's--the studio wall.
