The wizard competition is a major component of the television show, and the show actually keeps pretty good continuity. The concept is explained in the pilot that they will eventually have to compete in a competition, and only the winning sibling can keep their powers, and the show eventually concluded with that competition. As the show entered its final season, the characters started becoming nervous about the approaching competition, and there were several plot points threw in that mentioned how far away the competition was, which were accurate to when the finale aired, along with other events that wouldn't happen until later, showing that the writers planned out a good part of the show in advance.

Brandon C Maximum TBH I kinda like how the competition was portrayed as a wizard vs wizard kind of thing in the movie rather than the obstacle course set up they went with in the series. I found it underwhelming.

AnnaStones oh yeah they did have an actual competition. I keep forgetting that this wasn't the series finale and I totally agree with you that I like the wizard vs. Wizard style competition way more than what they did in the show. Mainly because I completely forgot what the competition ended up being in the show.

You can really see how desperate Alex was after both of her brothers ceased to exist. It's kinda sad that Selena doesn't get much credit in today's era. She's not a bad singer, but I prefer her acting.

I'm so glad you liked it. I love this movie and the show is one of my favorites. The Wizard Competion is a huge part of the show so I understand why you didn't get it. They spend seasons explaining the rules and reasons. It's very built up which is why they didn't need to explain it for the movie. But it is confusing for newcomers.

Bridleway Studios I also think it's kinda funny how they totally changed the process of becoming a full wizard in the show. At first, I was kinda miffed and a little confused, but this shows how planned the one in the show was-they had twist and turns, but they also had safety nets too and knew what values they wanted/had to test. Here, in the movie, it's almost archaic because of the time contraints. They will quite literally vanish if yhey are not fast enough. Plus, they have no history to go on...they are constantly forgetting each other. The dad seemed to choose this test as a blank slate. Essentially, whoever was powerful, quick-witted, and determined enough got the magic in its entirety. Kinda cool when ya think about it. :)

No lie. I'm happy that Doug's been enjoying most of the Disney Channel movies he's seen this year despite being WAY out of the movies' target age range. Sure there have been some duds and disappointments (2/3rds of the Zenon movies, Cheetah Girls 1, and Camp Rock) but for the most part he's enjoyed them. This pleases me.

To be fair the wizard competition is the goal and climax of the show. Each one of them wants to win and keep their powers, this part of the show is only in the movie so they can have a bunch of special effects and an epic battle at the end of the movie. You can even compare the last episode of the show with the battle in this movie and you'll see why they took the advantage of extra budget in the movie. Seriously, the last battle of the show is a lot more simple and less climatic but still decent.

The wizard competition at the end Is from the show. It works like this: Only one person from the family can be a wizard into adulthood. All three of the kids are in training now, but they’ll eventually have to take part in a challenge, showcasing their skills. Whoever wins keeps their powers, and the others lose theirs.

MJdragonmaster It wouldn’t affect the population. Their dad lost his magic but all of the kids have magic. It doesn’t affect children inheriting magical abilities. They just need a parent that is or was a wizard.

I actually don't really remember any of the other stuff on this movie being, memorable (except for the bonding parts) and yet I remember being on the edge of my seat when the tournament happened, sure it all got reversed but I didn't knew that! I didn't even watch the show that much, but I knew that was a big deal

Yeah, the competition and the reason for it are explained in the show. (For example, there's an episode where the Dad's irresponsible magical brother comes to visit and we find out the reason why he got the magic was because the Dad fell in love with the Mom and Wizards can't marry humans, so he gave it up for her.)

I used to watch the show SO MUCH!!! Not only because it was on TV a lot, but I also really enjoyed how fun and enjoyable it was, and it even had some heartfelt moments. Fun fact! The father is played by Dom DeLuise's son, and even voiced Coop from Megas XLR.

At the end, Alex becomes their family wizard, Justin becomes a headmaster or something because he cares so much about the proper study and such, and Max gets to take over the sub shop so they all live happily ever after, Justin keeping his powers as well. My sister and I watched it when we were younger, it was very enjoyable and the movies were well done for Disney Channel.

He's a lot older than many of us, so he Nickelodeon'ed. His first annual (January) month was Nickelodeon Month, where he confessed watching many of the Nicktoons and Nickcoms (and SNICK) while Disney was still just showing the Disney Afternoon and had yet to meet Raven, Miley, and Selena.

The competition near the end definitely makes more sense if you watched the show, one of the main overarching themes and storylines is that at the end of their training only one gets to be a wizard. It's a really big thing that you get to see develop the charachters and fuels dramatic moments really well, so I think they kind of borrowed some of that drama assuming their audience saw the show.

True. I really enjoyed the majority of the show. It was towards the end when I started to watch it less and less. It was when the youngest brother turned to a girl for short time. After that it got boring, at least up to the finale.

Yeah! Max got turned into a girl. I don't remember why or how he did (I haven't seen the show in years) but he did and for several episodes we had to watch him as a little girl. What pissed me off even more was that they didn't have the actress have his quarks, mannerisms or anything that was his character. From what I remember, it was just her being there. It was really stupid.

This show was everything to me. It sparked a big continuity within the show that was really awesome to follow as a kid. And the comedy was always top notch, it's a real classic. It's a surprise to see a show like that come out of Disney. Even though they did have other classic shows, like Zack and Cody.

Wizards Of Waverly Place used to be my favorite show when I was little. In the show, the siblings were always training for a wizard competition, because only one of them would get to keep their powers as adults. In fact the final episode was just them doing the competition.

The Wizard competition is pretty much the whole bases for most of the antics in the show. In each episode, they lean new magic so that they can at some point compete in a competition for the family magic and become a full wizard, since only one of the offspring from the head wizard, (being their farther in this reality) can inherit the family magic. In the show, the fathers brother was the head wizard (but as the film explains, it's not because he won their wizard competition, but because the farther gave up his magic so he could marry the mother), but since the uncle had no children and magic is still in the farther DNA, they allowed his children to be the new predecessors.

I do have to agree, it isn't a perfect movie but it is worth the watch in my opinion, especially to see this family together. However as someone that did watch the show, I do want to let you know that yeah the competition at the end is something you need to watch the show to know about. It's built up from the beginning of the show that the three siblings must compete in a wizard competition because only one person can be a wizard when becoming adults. Throughout the show, they have basically been in training by their Dad, who is a wizard himself, while also causing and getting out of shenanigans. Eventually though they had to compete and whoever wins gets to keep their powers while the others lose theirs. Honestly, if you do ever get the chance though, you should watch at least a few episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place. It was, in my opinion, one of the last live action shows that was really good, or at least entertaining, from Disney (that's my opinion, please don't hate on me commentors).

I think it's more to keep the wizard population to a minimum, since in the show wizards have to hide their identities while living amongst the non-magical beings (humans). This is an issue I don't think is addressed in the actual show, but this is what I believe to be the explanation for that if there is one X,,,,,,D All I know is that of all the siblings, only one can win the magical powers since they have to prove their worth for it.

I definitely remember Pixel Perfect. My favorite is probably Stepsister from Planet Weird. Anyone remember that? It was so bizarre, and it felt like the writers were totally aware of how ridiculous it was and were making fun of it. The strange tone and writing ended up making it really funny for me.

There is a wizard school in the show, the principal goes by the name Professor Crumble, there is a ball based sport and all students have to wear glasses. Sound familiar?

This was one of my favorite shows when I was younger and I remember watching this movie quite a few times after the series got taken down from netflix, i’m so happy doug pretty much enjoyed it ^-^ and yeah, you have to know the show to get the family wizard contest

Oh God yes. I tried to be open minded when they first aired it but when I saw what they did with the character, I stopped watching it until Jake T. Austin came back. It pissed me off how she was NOTHING like Max and they used her just to be cute.

I've watched this and the thing is in Wizards of Waverly Place there is a certain rule that their can only be one wizard from each family as such, once the siblings are old enough, and they have to compete against each other to see who will be the family wizard!

WOWP was actually a good show. Silly, of course, but clever in its silliness. Even in the episodes they clearly ripped-off Harry Potter they addressed it and made fun of it. There was a magical school wizards go on summer, and part of their uniform is glasses like Harry Potter's. There's a big sport competition, that's magic ping pong. It was a creative show. The movie wasn't creative, it's Back to the Future with no time travel, but it is a fun movie.

The thing with the competition is even though in the movie it feels like it came out of nowhere it actually makes alot of sense if you watch the show because in the show they establish alot of the wizard rules and one of them is how there's this competition to decide which sibling gets to be a wizard and there's conflict because they're all studying together and they know that the reason they're all studying is because they're going to have to compete against each other and stuff

I loved this show as a kid! I haven't seen this movie in years and my brain was fuzzy on everything that happened but I STILL remember the emotion and tears in Alex's voice when Justin couldn't remember her. Selena Gomez did a fantastic job 👍🏼

I hate how half-assed the wizard competition was. The series built the event up like it could be an hour special or a series finale, but the movie reduced it to a five minute scene.

I never got a chance to finish the series and I was able to watch the movie last summer at my sister's house when Disney had a DCOM marathon. I should get around to watching that proper finale.

It probably helps the wizard's performance that the actor, Steve Valentine (gawd, I used to crush so hard on him in Crossing Jordan once upon a time :D) used to be a not too shabby magician before he started being an actor. He was also fun in an episode of Monk where he also played a magician :D

I'm going to take a guess and say if he does Teen Beach Movie, he's going to think it's as bad as Cheetah Girls. I think he'll have a hard time liking Descendants too.

Hmm, I don't think so. At least HSM had originality (for the time), okay acting from the kids, put effort into its' choreo and group numbers, and had fun where it could. Descendants is where you get in to messing with Disney Villians, which are a topic he seems to be a purist on. I see him bringing up how grossly mischaracterized the villians are and how bad and/or corny the acting is (Dove Cameron aside, she was ok). The style is already getting dated (dubstep as your opening? How 2013!). He seems to be tired of fish-out-of-water stories, and that 'Be Our Guest' number is probably going to get brutalized. I'm not a huge HSM fan, but it wasn't the worst thing on TV. Descendants is preteen pandering, and DW can see through that stuff in a New York minute.

The big climax of the whole series is supposed to be the Family Wizard Competition. When fully trained, wizard siblings need to compete to keep their wizard powers and become full wizards, while the other siblings lose their powers forever. Hence, the unmagical magician guy. Unlike Harry Potter and other school of magic stories, these kids are being homeschooled by their father, who won his Family Wizard Competition but sacrificed his powers to be with a mortal woman and gave them to his younger brother, much to the dismay of his sister. This extent of exposition was unnecessary, but I enjoyed writing it nonetheless.

Wizards of Waverly Place was one of the best Disney Channel shows, in my opinion. I even have a build a bear with a wand attached to its hand and Alex's face on the foot of it, from back when the show must have done a line of bears.

I started watching this show because I had a crush on Selena Gomez when I was younger, I stayed because the characters were good and the dialogue was almost always delivered well. It made me laugh a lot for sure. Not my favorite show, but I really enjoyed it.

I kinda wish Doug dove into more of these movies like the Color of friendship. They really helped teach me how even if we in America are well off there are still injustices in the world. Those made much more of an impact on me the the wizards of wavory place movie

Yes happy got to this one! It as well as the show was such an big part of my childhood and the connection with Selenas character Alex and her brother Justin played by David Henry was so believable and strong something you could see in the show to it’s one of the reasons the show and this movie won Emmys and where so popular the family connection was always its strongest advantage , I’m glad you could see that to Doug and yeah you need to see the show to fully understand the wizards competition and how it works and it’s different than this in the end because here they had little time but basically only the full wizard can use the stone and that can only be one of the 3 siblings it’s explained true the series building up to the finale where the actual competition is held. So it’s understably not easy to get if someone just sees the movie. great review Doug glad you liked it! Keep up the great work and I hope you’ve had an great Christmas. 🔮
