human error can happen once, yes. for practically any sales of Beta cards from ChannelFireball or StarCityGames, I think it's fair to ask that the order be handled by more than one employee and both/all employees double check everything and SIGN that they checked it. Beta is serious money. I'm getting into Revised this year just a bit at a time, and I do *not* want to be hearing that one of the TOP names can be scamming even unintentionally-- it really throws not just that company into suspicion but also makes you wonder how many times this has happened with how many companies and how safe are the Reserved List cards if all the best ones might be Collector's Edition Re-backs. If the Reserved List confidence is threatened, the whole house of cards is threatened. I'm not sure what kind of action is appropriate but it NEEDS to be a topic of discussion and addressed and an answer needs to be resolved upon by the community for how to deal with this. It's not just CFB's business that hurts here, it's the whole Magic market.

Then have a billionth staff meeting about counterfeit stuff and continue business as usual. Yeah there is actually a branch of detectives that look into magic card fraud and fakes. They do all the work of regular investigators but they wear flowing robes.

do you REALLY think someone as big as channel fireball is interested in putting their reputation on the line for $100? they don't give a shit about $100, that's pennies on the sidewalk to them. it's obviously an accident, Timmy got hammered and came in with a hangover because he wasted all of his vacation time already. as long as they take the appropriate measures in refunding and owning up to the mistake all is good.

Beyond just the fact that people make mistakes there is always the possibility that the card came in incredible condition and was hard to spot. Rebacks will degrade over time because of glue, humidity, handling, and everything else a card faces. That card could have been incredibly hard to spot when bought and simply degraded overtime not to be moved by someone who simply packages the cards and is not trained to check for counterfeits and the like. Rebacks can be crazy hard to spot if done right but time will always make them easy to see

Huh? Collector's Edition cards have SQUARE CORNERS! Beta is rounded, and Alpha is MORE-ROUNDED than Beta. Betas corners are the same as every other MtG card except Alpha and Collector Edition, so if you have ANY new MtG cards, you can look at them and see what both they and beta look like, and know they don't have square corners like the collector's editions do! As far as the corners of the fake in this video, you don't even really need to compare them to other cards because the upper right was clearly different from the lower-left. So if all you know is that the real cards are with identical corners, that's all you need to know that his card is fake/altered!

ICameToCommentThemAll collectors edition had square corners, I think as part of making them look different from real cards. The counterfeiters cut the corners down, knowing that it will grade as damaged, but they still get to sell a 50 cent card for $80 bucks, so it works out for them.

Rebacked cards are hard to spot initially and then come undone, it's possible that this card had been sitting around for a long while. I agree though, somebody is going to be in trouble I'm sure.

You're not going to pay experts in collectibles verification, valuation and grading to pack boxes, and you're going to need a lot more of them to pack than just to review cards. It's really hard to get such people to repetitively pack boxes anyway. Just like people who put high-end computer parts into boxes for shipping -- I don't have expectations that they're going to be as knowledgeable about those parts as the engineers who're responsible for designing the parts, and the latter isn't going to be in the shipping department packaging the product.

Yeah I would provide proof of packaging. From a business perspective it's a pain unsleeving double sleeved cards and reordering what you're buying for every single order. I get why they do it, but I guess it's annoying on the seller

When I sold some old Pokemon cards to an online trade-in place, I put them unsleeved in stacks according to what I'd told them I'd send. Bulk rares, bulk commons/uncommons, singles, etc. I put each stack in a ziplock baggie, with a rubber band around them outside the bag to keep them from sliding/rubbing. Outside, so just in case the rubber got dried out it would stick to the bag not the cards. I then put a sticky note between each bag and the rubber band, telling what category of card was inside. This way everything would be safe from water/weather, but still easy to process when the store got them.

That said, Rudi was very fair towards Channel Fireball, stating the most realistic scenario. And aside from pinning their response, he also posted a separate comment himself to de-escalate things.

Reach - Splatoon it's a fact that when people start collecting anything they usually start with the lower end or damaged. (Comics, cards etc) because they can't afford mint. Most of the time their knowledge of cards isn't as vast as someone who has been collecting for some time. Channel fireball is a multimillion dollar company so I assume they have the resources to know if a card is fake or rebacked.

Do you know just how many $100 cards they buy and sell on a daily basis? I doubt this was anywhere close to the top of the list in terms of expensive cards they bought / sold that day.

while you are correct about how many cards they possibly process in a day, that duty is given to someone who has more experience in high end sales and should have known better. They aren't going to trust the high end shipping sales to some idiot who has only been playing magic for 3-4 years. The person who shipped this knew it was scuffed and should have red flagged it for management.

If anything I think it's more understandable **because** it was in obviously damaged condition. I can easily see what probably happened here, someone was having a bad day, and when they came across this in their grading "Well then... that's certainly grading damaged." (puts it with the damaged stuff without further inspection). Have a little empathy, sometimes human elements line up badly, no matter how foolproof the processes are designed to be.
