Each time Chantay Mejia collects beads on the tip of her needle, she connects with an ancient tradition of the Shoshone-Bannock people. Her beadwork reflects a mastery that has been developed over generations through her family and her community.
There are five federally recognized Native American tribes in Idaho: Nez Perce, Kootenai, Shoshone-Bannock, Shoshone-Paiute, and Coeur d’Alene. These tribes nurture their unique artistic practices rooted in tradition and prepare the next generation to develop these skills. THE OWENS VALLEY PAIUTE PEOPLE ARE CLOSELY RELATED TO THE BANNOCK. I GOT DNA WITH BANNOCK TRIBE> we say MUNA HUU, house is Novi, Ear is Naka, 4 is watsugwe, We are the NUMU, Rabbit is Kamu, other tribes called both us the mono, but we live in inyo county and the bannock are far away. they said the Bannock was Northern Paiute. they meant Southernmost NORTHERN PAIUTE from MONO LAKE AREA/Owens valley. My Family is BIGPINE creek Paiute considered Joaquin jims Band .. we did not surrender to the Government. and were Feared by the Settlers. Look this up Kinship of the bannock. ethnography of owens valley paiute, Bannock shoshone language, search up thease , and compare the literature. they dont kno where the bannock came from and its a area of current research. our tribe must of split up. but i said it second, the etnographers julian stewart and haynes both thought the bannock were Mono/Poviotso and since i got my dna tested i found that i have more then 10 4 to 6th cousins right now on fort hall , and i can go back 5 or 6 generations and cant explain the connection. anyone interested in this topic please contact me. tokichow
