From the composer:
"The first performance of any of my compositions outside of school was the programming of Motet for 12 Singers by Chanticleer. This was back in 1997! And it was thanks to my old friend John Kline, who recommended I take my score to a concert that was going to be performed by the group in Miami. I took the score having NO clue who the ensemble was, but by the intermission, I was TERRIFIED to approach them with it, as they had blown me away with their artistry. Frank Albinder was who I approached, and I remember him mentioning, "well, we receive many many scores, so thank you, but please don't have any expectations." I certainly did not, and that was that. A few months later I received an email from then Director of Chanticleer, Joe Jennings, letting me know they were going to be performing Motet as part of their "In A New Light" program, in remembrance of their founder, Louis Botto, and were going to fly me to San Francisco for it. [...] Needless to say, getting to rehearse with Chanticleer engrained itself in my mind's retina. Listening to their voices bring a piece I had written to life[...], I knew my trajectory truly changed in that moment, fueling indefinitely the potential of a composing career. So here we are, nearly 25 years later, and they have decided to program the Motet again. It is truly an encouraging gift to have their advocacy and support throughout the decades, and cannot thank their current director, Tim Keeler enough for programming it in this entirely novel method, as part of their "After a Dream" concert."
