From “Civitas sancti tui” by William Byrd, who shuffled off this mortal coil 400 years ago on July 4, 1623. Performed at @gracecathedral in San Francisco, a city that didn’t exist in Byrd’s lifetime!

Plain and non impressive. Have to say there’s been better times for this ensemble.

Perhaps you are right. It’s a different group of singers and a different director

👎👎👎 This piece is most beautiful just when its singers are unobtrusive. What you call "plain" is the understanding that the lines Byrd wrote contain all the breadth of expression within them intrinsically. In this case, the artists' job is more to listen, and then to sing in a manner that allows the music to speak for itself. It was a beautiful performance.

I wish they had sung music like this when they came to PA this summer. Instead they sang a pretty uninteresting program, and the blend has suffered, too. I agree, they are not what they used to be.

@@TheMockinbird I agree. Many composers of the baroque era sought to create music that would be enjoyed for its surface simplicity, while each part had elements of complexity. It is what I love about singing baroque choral music. Don't get much opportunity nowadays, so I enjoy when I hear talented musicians add one to their repetoire.
