@@Discernin8this IS the youth. And they’re tired of seeing legislators waste time and their taxpayer dollars by doing nothing to address the concerns of the average Tennessean, bending the knee to rich people and corporate interests, and using dumb culture war issues to distract and divide. @@Discernin8 Nashville isn't the same place it used to be, even ten years ago. We still have Nashville mayors whose biggest priority seems to be catering to real estate investors/developers who make donations to their campaigns, but it's hard to point out anything else that has remained the same. I recently drove past the fairgrounds and was shocked at the changes, since the last time I had been there was when Mayor Dean was trying to find an excuse to close the fairgrounds and sell the land off to developers. The show barn, livestock barns, and the exhibition halls next to them are gone, with a big stadium sitting where they were.

To all the people focused on respectability politics: would you tolerate someone who promised to do a job wasting your time and money by doing nothing over the course of several days? Or would you stand up, get angry, and demand they do their job or fire that person and get your money back? Think about it.
@paulstevens752810 ай бұрын
The TN Senate passed a few bills, tabled the rest (claiming there wasn't enough time in the special session to properly discuss them), then called it a day while they waited for the House to finish. The TN House turned into a circus, and they would have been much better off to follow the example set by the TN Senate, instead of dragging out the pointless, but easily predictable, mess. It would have been better to not waste the time and money on having the special session, as many of us had suggested in comments left on the state legislature website, some time ago. Members of the TN legislature warned the governor that a special session would likely turn into a pointless circus involving out of state groups trying to get attention from the news media, when they were asking him to not call the special session, so the current result shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone.

@@josephharmon9787 There were members of the legislature that stated to the news media, after the governor said he may call a special session to consider a red flag law, that if they didn't pass gun control during the normal session, there was no reason to expect it to pass during a special session. @paulstevens752810 ай бұрын
You sure about that? Statements from the politicians involved, before the session started, seemed to indicate that the majority of them couldn't figure out why they were even having a special session, with a small number of them saying they were going to do something about guns. The governor initially said he wanted a red flag law, then he backed away from that topic, but couldn't let go of the idea of calling for a special session.

Maybe next time around, the Tennessee House will get even closer to resembling the legislatures of some other countries, where the two sides start shouting at each other over their disagreements over an issue, then somebody throws a punch, and the whole legislature turns into a brawl with both sides trying to physically beat the other side into submission. And the Senate will probably sit back and say the Senate is going to do what the Senate does, while the House is going to do what the House does (which is probably a very accurate way of describing the overall situation).

@alwaysoutafterdark613610 ай бұрын
Why would you NOT want to implement a red flag law?
@paulstevens752810 ай бұрын
@@alwaysoutafterdark6136 The Covenant school shooter (which is supposedly the main reason for this special session) lived with their parents. The parents claimed they didn't even know there were any guns in their house. The shooter likely chose the guns they used, based on the ability to disassemble or fold them and put them in a backpack (which is about the only selling point, other than the ability to use Glock pistol magazines, for the rifle that the shooter used). The shooter's mother said she asked what was in the bag, when the shooter left that day, but didn't get an answer. Who would you have expected to ask for a red flag order against the shooter? There is currently a lawsuit in a state that has a red flag law (Maryland, if my memory isn't off), over a codes inspector that got frustrated over someone not cutting their grass as often as the inspector wanted, and they filed a fraudulent red flag law complaint against the homeowner, then later asked to withdraw the red flag complaint (after the homeowner's guns were taken) when they realized how badly they had just destroyed their own career (the homeowner had evidence to prove the complaint was fraudulent). Red flag laws are generally constructed to impose the penalty first, then allow the accused the opportunity to defend themselves in court after they have already been punished. That kinda goes against the whole 'innocent until proven guilty' philosophy. Tennessee state law already allows a police officer to take someone into custody for a mental evaluation, if the officer thinks the person is a danger to themselves or others (no time wasted on going to a judge to get an order signed, until the doctor is ready to submit their report on the evaluation). Most, if not all, states passed similar laws in the 1970s, starting with Florida and their Baker Act.

@@earlyriser03 You’re right, the GOP are the ones to blame for this waste of money, about $350,000, just about the cost of a small house. This time though I don’t blame the parties for the waste of money, this one is square on Gov. Lee’s shoulders. He called a special session in clear violation of the Tennessee Constitution, specifically Article 3, Section 9 which gives the governor the power to call a special session ONLY on “extraordinary circumstances” and he must state specifically the purposes for which they are to convene (his proclamation was more opaque than fog in a humid morning and there were no extraordinary circumstances, the general assembly was still in session when the Covenant shooting took place) and the general assembly shall enter into business nothing for which they were not convened. The general assembly didn’t do a horrible job, though not a great one, but the governor violated his oath to uphold the Tennessee Constitution and for that should be removed from office. Unfortunately it’s become so common for all politicians to violate their oath that it means nothing anymore.
