The Rishi said : Seeing his brother Nishumbha slain, who was dear to him as his life, and his army being slaughtered, Shumbha angrily said, ‘O Durga you are too proud of your strength, don’t show your pride here. If you think you are so powerful, then why do you resort to the strength of others in war ?
Devi said, ‘I am all alone in the world. Who else is there besides me? See, O vile one, see how these Goddesses, who are my own powers, enter into my own self!’ After saying this, Brahmani and the rest of the Devis, got absorbed into the body of the Devi.
Devi said, ‘The numerous forms, which I had projected by my power have been withdrawn by me, and now I stand alone. Get ready to fight.’
The Rishi said : Then began a dreadful battle between the two of them, Devi and Shumbha, while all the devas and asuras looked on. With showers of arrows, with sharp and frightful weapons, both engaged again in a combat that frightened all the worlds alike.
The daitya-king, wounded by the blow of Her palm fell on the earth, but immediately he rose back up again. Seizing the Devi, he sprang up and mounted high into the sky. There they stood without any support and continued fighting.
Shumbha and Chandika fought as never before. They engaged in such close combat in the middle of the sky, that even the Siddhas and sages were surprised. After fighting for a long time, Ambika lifted him up, whirled him around and flung him down to earth. As soon as he fell to the ground, he got up and started flying towards Devi, desiring to kill her. Seeing the demon-king approach, Devi pierced his chest with a trident, killing him, and flung his body towards the earth. As soon as he hit the ground, the entire earth with its seas, islands and mountains shook.
When that evil asura was slain, the universe became happy and regained peace, and the sky got clearer. Flaming portent clouds that had covered the sky before, became tranquil, and the rivers once again started flowing along their courses. The minds of all the Devas became overjoyed, and the Gandharvas sang sweetly. Others played their instruments, and the nymphs danced. Pleasant winds blew; the sun became very brilliant; the sacred fires blazed peacefully in the Yagyashalas and the strange sounds that had risen in different quarters became tranquil.
Here ends the tenth chapter of Devi Mahatmya.
ऋषि ने कहा: अपनी जान से भी प्यारे भाई निशुंभ को मरा हुआ देखकर, और सेना को नष्ट हुआ देखकर, शुंभ ने क्रोधित होकर कहा, 'ओ दुर्गा, तुम्हें अपनी शक्ति पर बहुत गर्व हैं । यहां अपने गर्व का प्रदर्शन मत करो। यदि तुम इतनी शाक्तिशाली हो, तो युद्ध में दूसरों की शक्ति का सहारा क्यों लेती हो।'
देवी ने कहा, 'मैं इस दुनिया में अकेली हूं। मेरे सिवा कौन है? देखो, हे दुर्जन, देखो कैसे ये सारी देवियां जो मेरी अपनी ही शक्तियों से बनी हैं मुझ ही में विलीन होती हैं !' इसके बाद, ब्राम्हणी और अन्य देवियाँ देवी अंबिका के शरीर में विलीन हो गईं।
देवी ने कहा, 'मेरे द्वारा उत्पन्न हुईं अनगिनत रूपों को मैंने अपने अंदर वापस लिया है, और अब मैं अकेली खड़ी हूं। युद्ध के लिए तैयार हो जाओ।'
ऋषि ने कहा: तब केवल देवी और शुंभ के बीच एक भयंकर युद्ध शुरू हुआ, बाकी सभी देवता और असुर श्रोता बन गए। तीरों की बौछार होने लगी, तेज और भयंकर अस्त्र शस्त्रों से एक दूसरे पर वार किया गया।इस भयंकर द्वंद युद्ध को देखकर सभी जीव घबरा गए।
देवी के हाथ की मार से शुंभ घायल होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर गया, लेकिन तुरंत ही वह फिर से उठ खड़ा हुआ। देवी को लेकर , वह आकाश में ऊंचा उड़ा। वहां पर वे बिना किसी आधार के खड़े रहकर युद्ध करने लगें।
आकाश के बीचोबीच ऐसे अद्भुत संघर्ष को देखकर ऋषिमुनि और सिद्धगण भी चौंक गए। बहुत समय तक लड़ने के बाद, अम्बिका ने शुंभ को अपने हाथों में उठाकर, घुमाते हुए पृथ्वी की ओर फेंक दिया। जैसे ही वह पृथ्वी पर गिरा, वह देवी को मारने की इच्छा से फिर उड़ पड़ा। देवी ने त्रिशूल से शुंभ का सीना छेदकर उसे मार डाला और पृथ्वी की ओर फेंक दिया। जैसे ही उसका शरीर भूमि से टकराया, पूरी पृथ्वी अपने समुद्रों, द्वीपों और पर्वतों के साथ हिल गईं।
वह दुर्जन मारा गया। उसकी मृत्यू से ब्रह्मांड खुश हुआ और शांति पुनः स्थापित हो गईं। आकाश साफ हो गया। जिन लाल घने बादलों ने आकाश को ढका था वे शांत और सौम्य हो गए। नदियाँ अपने मार्गों पर लौट आई। सभी देवताओं के मन खुश हुए, और गंधर्व गीत गाने लगें, वाद्य बजाने लगें । अप्सराएं नृत्य करने लगी। ताजी हवा बहने लगी। सूर्य चमकने लगा। अग्निशालाओं की पवित्र अग्निया लौट आई। और सारी विचित्र ध्वनियां बंद होकर मधुर ध्वनियां सुनाई देने लगी।
यहां देवी माहात्म्य का दसवां अध्याय समाप्त हुआ।
