At the first rising of the Sun over Middle-earth, the mortal Men awaken in Hildórien, in the far East and South of the continent. Some of them will eventually make it to Beleriand, and become embroiled in the Wars of the Noldor and Morgoth Bauglir.

Of course the Elves would have issues getting along, understanding, and jst in general accepting Men, I mean they barely have a few decades to get to know a guy before he's gone and they have to deal with some other guy instead. How can they expect to really get along without a century or two of bonding?

Thank you so much for your videos, Dan! You have inspired me to revisit the Silmarillion - which I just finished. I love the way you connect it's story with other Tolkien works. Looking forward to the next! x

Thank you. I've finished the audiobook a few months ago, but the lore is so complex and big that I've got lost. Analyzing this book is like analyzing The Bible.

I think the Valar's biggest problem is that they are so separated from the perspective and plight of all the lesser peoples of the world. I suppose jaded might be the better wording? Let's just push them over there and let goodness reign. What harm can happen? Really? I really do wish we had more interaction with the Valar. Or that they had shown more interest when things weren't at their doorstep if only to get to know them better. "The Self cursed" how interesting...when most of the problems of men come from some people maybe not finishing off one of their own. >___> Are the names just the ones they were called through time? Or did it matter between which faction was speaking? It would be interesting to see this time from a mortal perspective.

Just want to thank you for your efforts and dedication. This series has really helped me get through this one during a buddy read with a friend. LOTR isn't really my fav series and I can't get into it as deep as I'd like when reading, so this helps keep me on track with what's happening in the story 🙏❤️

I feel like the Elves saw mankind as their cute little kid brother who they took under their wing

I both like and dislike that the awakening of Man (and Elves for that matter) is not given more detail. We are simply told they awoke and generally headed west. How many awoke? Were there two or two thousand? Were they created previously by Iluvatar and placed underground, similar to the dwarves? So many unanswered questions.

It felt like Tolkien was maybe leaven the possibility open that they had evolved into homo sapiens in the way we understand it, and that's why the Valar had to wait so long - he keeps it vague and mysterious, perhaps to lend itself to more belief systems (while at the same time having a earth that goes from flat to round and sun born long after the earth from a tree). He's equally vague about the Elves birth. We do see the dwarfs getting crafted by hand, but they were made on the sly so it may not be the same thing, and we still don't know how seven dwarf fathers turned into seven tribes. Somethings are more magical when they aren't explained.

The Valar: The first children are here! Let's roll out the red carpet for them and give them knowledge! The Valar when Men awake: ...meh, they can figure it out.

Question… I am slowly reading through the volumes of the history of middle earth on my Kindle because I have a visual impairment which makes it very difficult to read print. Do you know when the last three volumes 10 through 12 will be available on the United States version of Kindle? They came out last year on the United Kingdom version on Amazon but I cannot find any information about their release for the US version. Cheers and keep up the great work
