Several years after her journey from Gondolin, Aredhel's son, Maeglin, who was raised on tales of his uncle, King Turgon, persuades his mother to flee Nan Elmoth with him and return to the people of the Noldor. However, following their escape, they are tracked to the Hidden Way, through the mountains, by Maeglin's vengeful father Eöl.

It’s crazy that Aredhel feared Eol so much considering how she was seemingly unfazed by Ungoliant’s Brood and their webs of shadows. Really goes to show how fearsome and wicked Eol was.

when I first read the Silmarillion it seemed to me that Melkor's malice wasn't initially innate in him, but it grew out of the sadness that his contrary nature caused him. He didn't work with the other Valar and so become lonely which lead to depression which lead to malice. Maeglin seems to be following a similar path. I'm reminded of Hind scripture where we are called to act in Dharma for the good of all but acting on one's own selfish behalf leads to further disaster, often causing a chain of events that gets worse and worse

And so we begin one of the three main stories of the Silmarillion which are also great tragedies: Gondolin falls due to Maeglin's treachery, Luthien dies as a mortal for her love of Beren, and Turin suffers Morgoth's curse. Who said Tolkien couldn't write tragedy and dark stuff?

Such a dark and discordant tale- hard to believe that it comes from the same author who could write the Hobbit. Tolkien certainly had some horror and thriller chops, it reminds me of the abandoned fourth age story. Great video!

I love this chapter! Such a refreshing change of pace and story telling when compared to the previous more geographic and political tellings. I love how Tolkien’s lore feels like real history accountings. They feel very factual and not overly dramatic. Thus when the drama does hit, it hits hard.

Sad that five weeks have passed without a new video. I've been recommending your channel to all my D&D friends, many of whom have wanted to read the Silmarillion but have been daunted by its prose. Really hope you keep on going cos your videos are perfect for beating the night terrors to sleep and far better than other channels I've seen when it comes to explaining the Sil. Please continue cos I can't wait to hear about the fall of Beleriand in your voice, eerily enough :D Edit: just been through all the other vids in the playlist to like them but stop livestreaming and keep explaining the Silmarillion goddammit..

So many great stories in Gondolin. Maeglin's intention from the start was a bit wicked bc he wanted to learn the location of Gondolin by any means he could. Which meant whittling down his mother or by reading her mind against her will. He was driven by the idea of becoming the heir to the king of Gondolin. When he fell in love with Idril, he behaves much like his father did when Eol entrapped Aredhel to his dwelling then taking her as his wife. Another story says he forcibly took her against her will. I would love to see Eol's black armor that was supple yet hard enough to stop a blade or arrow.. Absolutely fascinating story telling.

Maeglin is arguably more evil than his father because he is much more ambitious. Though Eol is incredibly sinister, he does not desire (with the exception of aredhel) to control that which is not already his. Maeglin, on the other hand, has a far greater desire to take what is not yet his, and as a result, the damage he does is much more widespread.

I grew impatient and stopped watching these over a year ago because of the length of time between videos. The production value and information contained in these videos is superb, and first-rate. They need to make (What I would joking call:) A "New International Version" of the Silmarillion that gathers canon and makes a better compilation in a more contemporaneous language. I appreciate the artistic style in the use of archaic English. It's artistically fitting, but makes for difficult reading. I've come back only to hit another cliffhanger. Well, your work, style, and effort is deeply appreciated, and in future if you want any voice work done, I would love to audition with a script sometime. ;) Thanks for doing what you do!

And I am looking for more voice actors for upcoming episodes; if you have a showreel or sample that you'd like to send me, you can email me at: danofgeekdom@gmail.com -- or just hit me up on Twitter -- I'm predominantly looking for those who can do western European accents. 😁

I think it's quite sad how if Idril showed Maeglin affection as a family member rather than distancing herself from him, The Fall of Gondolin could've possibly been avoided. So in actuality, Idril indirectly contributed to the Fall of Gondolin by giving him the cold shoulder instead of helping him. She must've known Maeglin was a deeply troubled individual considering her wise and intelligent personality and knowing of his feelings of her. It puzzles me as to why she would give him the cold shoulder or at least that's what Tolkien implies happened from the texts. It also makes me curious as to why she didn't tell her father about Maeglin's feelings, surely he would've addressed Maeglin and gave him council.

Shame that in the Second and Third Ages, there are hardly any elves that were bad and corrupt as Feanor, the sons of Feanor, Eol or Maeglin.

Silmarillion is such a great book. Far more dramatic and emotional. With female characters driving the action more than male, dwarves and elves who aren't in line with their monarchs or racialized priorities, who focus on personal goals or conflicts.

For some reason, as I was reading, I thought Eöl might survive the fall. I'm glad he did not. His last words were used to curse his son, so good riddance.
