Mcdoubles back again with a brand new video and today CHAPTER 2 IS OUT! It's time to check it out, pursue a NINJA BUILD, and see if we can enjoy Project Ascension again!
In this video I give you my day 1 experience. I played this server as long as I could possibly play it, stayed up all night just to pursue the build that I wanted and jump into some high risk, and let me just say - it was definitely an experience.

Seems like the normal ascension experience to 80% of us. Everything out side of a few specific builds are pointless and make you feel like you've wasted your time. Then, they keep catering to those rare, super power builds by adding more mythic+s and such so its clearly the way your 'ment to play'. Honestly, i think if it goes on long enough it will kill ascension, they need to focus on the leveling and semi-casual experience and not the no-life, super optional, dozen add-ons who dungeon rush. No one is arguing that every build should be top tier, but at least have it so you get something. Basic viability instead of thinking "Welp, ive wasted a day with this s***." And not even the point buy is safe, so many builds are useless there too even when you do have everything. They need a complete re-visiting of all their builds.. and yes, really they are basically classes because why not add lying to the complaint list.

Yeah they turned it into greedy fomo garbage. I might come back for a ruleset with preset builds. I think they had something like that for league 4 but dropped the ball by allowing freepick. As is, Ascension is still preset builds but with lots of gambling and grasping for your wallet

By the way, this is how the game has felt for most of Ascensions's lifespan if you didn't know or research what spells, talents, enchants, builds were meta, and instead just tried to build something fun, or don't have skill cards. You just got a not-uncommon casual player's experience. Just sad that it happened even though you had a plan and the cards.

I think you’re just doing S9 wrong… most people have a mana storm character, they farm MS and Prestige multiple times JUST to farm Skill Cards. Once you get a ton of skill cards you will be able to set 6 skill cards and 8 talent skill cards, which should be enough to guarantee the effectiveness of your build. I’ve been playing on Ascension off and on since S3, and to be fair this season is shaping out to be the EASIEST for crafting a specific build assuming you do it right.

I agree with some of your points but you can’t genuinely think that an unoptimized fresh 60 shuriken thrower would do anything vs an almost 10k hp probably been rolling the build for a few months crimson champion tank

@@user-yu1sh2oy4f his build isn't the reason why he has 40% less health (and probably other stats) than the guys he's battling out with. It's still an MMO, you gotta expect putting in at least some basic effort into your character and not expect to clap BIS people with your levelling gear. Gear and cards are really not that much of an issue anymore on S9.

Ascension be like: Yeah, let us release RNG servers every year only to constantly tweak and remove the absurd RNG aspects of the server, like they are not learning from previous seasons and some brainrot ppl are defending this. Ascension needs to start releasing seasonal servers as a RNG version and a free pick version, cuz honestly, a lot of ppl are only playing on the seasonals for the new stuff and the seasonal awards not for the actual RNG mechanic

100% this. I was playing because I wanted to experiment with the new build possibilities and do something truly unique. But five months later, I still can't because it's much too difficult to get the talents you need to just *try* the build out and see if there is a useful core there. before spending the hundreds of hours needed to refine it.

I don't think a lot of people commenting get it... You should be able to get a decent build on your first roll and then use scrolls to improve it. Not reroll a bunch of times to try to get your build only to find out it sucks.

Well McDoubles does make some good content. In a tough place because he is playing the game as a regular user and it looks like the Ascension team does not want the players to go that fast in creating good builds. Instead when players do get the right build they know they earned it and can feel like they are truly unique. If McD wanted to do build guides on Area 52 just to demo the builds. Elune is there for people who want to trade their time and effort for truly unique builds.

The paladin guy and the bear that you fought have 70% dmg reduce taken just from talents. And after that they have their stance that further gives them dmg red. And just with something like fel infused weapon ur smg is popping.

It's neat how in the first few minutes you admit to and realise the massive flaw in this season of credit card skimming. You have to roll against everything in existence to get the bare minimum for some abilities to work. It's not fun to have 70% of the things needed and now you need to roll away every bit of your character to get that remaining 30% unless you blow through a college fund on bazaar tokens so you can get their arbitrary gacha card packs in enough amounts to then use their gacha pity system 2000 times to get the things you missed to then give them $10 to make leveling go fast enough that you don't use your keyboard cable to shorten your drop from the ceiling. Ascension devs won't listen, they have ruined this season but made so much gacha money they will do this again when they think they can get away with it. Have guild members who spent upwards of $3000 on this season alone.

Agree with your take on current state of pvp. Players you can kill, give you no satisfaction, while players who kill you take no damage and do massive crits.

I think one of the issues they embraced their "Classless WoW". I think the older version of ascension. Once again proves people just want a new version of WoW, including new classes. I think people were happy with having 60 new classes to play, shadow/frost mage, dragon warrior etc. This version of draft makes no sense to me. "A true classless", for what? So i can still TRY to roll dragon warrior but not get any of my spells. It's still not classes because I'm still going for those original builds, you just made it more difficult. All my opinion though. All I know is I had a group of friends playing every season and we have barely touched this game since S9 launched.

Let's be real, this season isn't true classless at all, if anything it's just S8 with extra RNG. Older seasons were more "classless" cause you only had a handful of LREs to mostly compliment your builds, not just build defining stuff that you fully build around of

Theres absolutely no fun hardcasting a wrath, then hardcasting a shadow bolt and they both have zero interaction with one another. True classless is just plain out a step back in terms of class fantasy, hence they replaced classes with builds.

the main deal breaker for me was the change to make the talents random as well. its already hard hitting all the active skills you want to make a good build and now even talents are randomize as well. even if you hit all the active skills you want but didnt get the talents you need to make them strong and have synergy it will become a trash build. I think ascension just runs out of idea on what to do on their server. me and my friends agrees to pass on this season and wait for another wild card or draft season without randomize talents.

I don't understand this change. Until last season they reduced the rng from the early days quite a lot and improved the algorithm to give you more bear stuff if you have bear form, or to not give you combo point spenders without generators for example. This season, they threw that out the window, did a 180 and went even harder in the opposite direction. I was so surprised by this I even gave them the benefit of the doubt, but I just don't enjoy it.

Ch2 is for people who have nothing else to do but to dump hundreds of hours to invest into a build. Who in their right mind wants to spend thousands of scrolls on a build? Its mindless;

I think the problems started when they split the legendary enchants into separate spells and abilities. Sure you get a lot more reroll scrolls but the pool of things you can roll just got quadrupled in size so you still feel like you're playing the lottery for your build. This and the fact that you need to basically rebuild the Legendary enchant piece by piece to make it work (As seen in last 2 videos). Not sure what the solution is but the current situation is not sustainable.

It's probably just a tin foil hat theory but I feel like the new "synergy" goes both ways. I can prestige and get over 80% of the build. And the final 1 or 2 cards that tie it all together are never seen. I can burn marks into the build, and I just know I won't see the ability I need.

The problem I think is that the ceiling is too high in terms of scaling, like right now Meta builds are TOO strong and it just severely outclasses any other build, like I would not be opposed to them just OUTRIGHT nerfing all the meta builds into the ground in order for other builds to be as nearly as strong or as survivable as they are. Season 9 is my first season and I feel the meta has created a elitist toxicity in the server where if you do not play the 8 or so Meta Specs/Classes then you are completely screwed over for the content you want to do, that is speaking from a mostly PVE standpoint, as for PVP it's not even remotely close to being fair since they added a 25% damage resistance to pvp to prevent "one shot builds" from reigning supreme but they just did nothing but cement the status norm with that move as one shot builds still outshine regular builds since the damage nerf also affects the normal people too and not so much the sweats.... If I wasn't so enthralled by the classless gimmick of the server I would be completely disheartened and shoved away by how gross and gatekeepy the Ascension community is.... Like I just want to do the harder content, Mythic and Ascended raids but I just can't get the time of day with these people as 10k DPS is considered "low" to them when 10k is the most I am able to push on my CUSTOM build I worked on and figured out. So far the only saving grace has been the manastorm in Chapter 2, all the new levels and changes has made it a breath of fresh air.

The thing is, ascension needs to make it so you can grind your class identity WHILE You level and not grinding random enchants in a hope to get it. Random enchants should compliment your build not DEFINE your build. That just cause a ton of annoyance and disappointment as you have to wait day after day to hit well enough.

I've been back on ascension after like 2 seasons trying out all the new stuff, and it still has it's flaws, but I definetally think that they're heading in the right direction. There's so much more free choice on how you want to make a build and do content the way you want and stuff like that. I found something interesting today, which is why I'm making this comment. I really think that you'd like a parry-tank build McDoubles. I know you had a lot of fun with the gnome and there's a lot of cool and interesting combos that I came across with the talents. I do also understand your feelings towards ascension right now, but I thought I'd at least make a comment.

Thanks for the reminder on why I quit playing Ascension. Starting with the childish and sometimes disgusting and disturbing toon names, to the bad rolls, to getting what you THINK are good rolls and turns out to be hot garbage. I tried to make many different builds, that looked like they had synergy, and turned out to hit like a doily cloth. There are thousands of possible builds but 99% of them are not worth your time making, if you can even get the right rolls TO make them, then there are the 10 meta builds that you either play or suck, very little middle ground. IDK if Ascension can rebound from the disaster that is season 9 or if classless is just dead now due to them running out of ways to do it. I MAY come back for Wrath or CoA, but having fun playing other private servers and Tauri Legion is coming out soonish so yeah RIP Ascension (for me) it was a fun few years.

Pretty much my experience as well starting out. Deal no damage and get dunked on in 2-3 hits. I was pretty excited for C9. That excitement went quickly out of the window when I realized how cumbersome and overly convoluted and roundabout draft is. RNG your starter skills, RNG your skills, talents, buy your skill cards, buy booster packs, buy gold booster packs, prestige and do it all over again until you have a somewhat functioning build (not even going into enchants). And then it's still leagues below what's considered best because those are being catered to the most by the PA devs. I get that there will always be "the best" or "BiS" in number based games but the difference is so humongous you might as well not deviated from the norm and where does that leave us? With something very much akin to classes and class based builds. The complete opposite of what Ascension is supposed to be about. I don't know, man. Maybe I just don't get it.

I'm new to ascension. I make a simple energy/combo dagger build and try to level doing quests in the open world but tons of overpowered and overgeared people will just come in and wipe out entire mines and fields of quest mobs so I have to sit and wait for respawns or hope for a stray mob left behind. And doesn't help that the mobs all level along with you so when I do go solo in a place with lots of mobs, i get overwhelmed and can't handle it. And then when I try the Manastorm to level in, the mobs are so hard it feels like a chore to try to get through even with the low CD health potion on hand. And then when I try the BG PvP I can't do anything and get 2 shot because I have bad gear and skills.

Level up once to gain gold and save all good gear while leveling prestige over remaking characters so you can save all your good armor buy the bg honor gear for low level it has great stats to start out with same with the weps

Season 9 is not classless at all, its random build, and Pray that it is good. season 8 was fun, you could get ablities and then build to make that interesting, and if you put some effort in you could build a build. but this feels.. a grind at best, at worst unplayable. both options suck for someone who is casual and not a hardcore player. The randomness is off the charts, and having no control over your build is, horrible. I love that they split up the legendary enchants cause those felt like classes within themselves. I want more control over my build, or character then what is happening on elune. I've ended up jumping over to Area 52 for the foreseeable future.

I went from Area 52 to Elune and I have to say, both servers are too extreme on their concept. Area 52, yes, you can play any build you want, but there are obvious builds that are just too OP compared to other builds, and since its easy to obtain them, you almost feel like you are playing a worst build on purpose. Elune is just too random and too grindy, but at the very least, those shitty builds from Area 52 can perform better in Elune and the OP ones are harder to obtain which is fair tbh, and that is what I was looking for personally, to create my "own" build, make it better and that everyone is in "equal ground".

I feel like this is kinda sad but i dont mind too much. The game loop now sort of encourages farming 1-60 like 30+ times to get good rerolls at 60. 1-60 in ms with pot no aura is less than an hour.

I hope they never EVER bring back wildcard talents after this season. Normal wildcard or draft is fine, it is just enough randomness to be new, but not so much that it's unplayable. But rng on talents is a shitshow that never should have happened. It turned the game into "prestige 100 times and still get nothing"

Randomised talents *might* have been alright if they guaranteed max level and it was draft instead of wildcard. But as it's actually implemented, you're absolutely right. It's unplayable.

Yeah, MMOs just aren't designed for PvP. I don't know how so many people fail to understand this, but they really should take some time to play some actually *good* PvP games in a few different genres.

Ascension has had several PvP revamps, but even with those it's always felt this way to me lol. The tooltips for PvP mods would definitely help for theory crafting and stuff, i dont understand why they would rather we have to dig through pages of patch notes just to find special pvp modifiers, a bit ludacris if ya ask me. I felt pretty much the same as you when i tried this season, felt like i was hittin people with a soggy sock or something.

Random rolls sucks to me, that's why when i feel the Ascension itch i'm going to Area 52, try a bunch of builds and then logout. i really don't feel compelled to just roll for skills in hope they somehow synergize... and now it's worse to me since even new spells are to be rolled and usually builds needs 3 to 4 key abilities to even work remotely good. no thanks, S9 can remain there to me :D

Isn't there a free pick mode? I've only played accession for 2 days, but I haven't had any of these problems. Key difference being, I am not going for a desired build. Whatever I rolled is what I played around, and I wasnt going for super specific talents or any idea of what I was gonna build. I took what synergies I rolled naturally, and tossed what didn't fit in at all. But from my understanding, you can pick your talents and shit in free pick, so is he trying to play free pick in wild card?

I think shattering REs was a good idea, but that's where all the good ideas this Season have stopped. What possessed them to completely overhaul the way Ascension works, and then instead of properly testing it in an environment where you can freely experiment with no limits, they put it in a setting with pure RNG where doing such is borderline impossible? If the current Shattered RE system is carried over at the (most likely premature) end of this Season, it's going to be a complete mess balance-wise that will take months if not more than a year to fix. Not to forget all the REs, abilities and interactions that have been quietly removed altogether... And Manastorm? Some people may like it as a gimmicky new playerstyle, but the majority of people only see it as a neccesary chore to acquire a decent amount of scrolls, plus it's been a massive drain on bandwidth all Season. I don't think a single season of Ascension has been laggier than S9. And Raid Trials? The DPS requirements for those are so obscene, they will be completely unreachable in future seasons where you don't get as many talents. Rebalancing those for the future is going to be yet more self-imposed work for the devs, which means even less work will be spent on actually making proper systems. They're even fumbling their own communications. There are more unchangelogged changes than changelogged changes, and more people on their Discord have been muted or banned in the last four months than in the four years prior, and for the most rediculous things at that. Ever been permanently muted for asking developers why so many crucial changes have not been changelogged? Multiple people have!

I guess they just didn't have a better solution to turn the game back into classless after they just made LREs the classes instead. Though I can't really fault people for being frustrated that you're basically forced to gamble constantly to get the build you want, but at the end of it all, it might have been a waste of time since you either couldn't hit or it still ended up being 1/10 as powerful as the guy who went for some other build.

I haven't been watching with recent Ascension stuff. I think I fell off when they made the talents RNG. I don't think Ascension should be pushing for more RNG, It's obviously an important component cause people don't really like playing area 52. (personally I think Area 52 is a better idea if you add some more meaningful interaction with how you get your skills but that's besides the point) Knowing that I think RNG is a needed component for people to have fun in ascension but it has it's limit. you don't want people falling off after 100 hours of playing with no positive interaction with your game. If I could plan it out I'd go for no RNG trial based ways of obtaining skills, like how you used to find really good skills in raids, but make it soloable stuff like the tower from Legion (just a set difficulty for the quality of skill you want). You want effort + reward in my opinion not pull lever = no coins. I'm sorry this didn't get you back into it my guy. I hope Ascension can pivot back from this in the future. It was an experiment worth having, but it can't be the way forward I think.

you talk about not understanding why you do no damage, you have literally, no build. like at all. builds dont work until hundreds and hundreds of rerolls, that's ascension now. its a gacha game. you either spend a ton of time grinding rerolls, or you spend money to skip the time. you'd think after playing for as long as you have you'd see that by now.

Here is my opinion on this season: the lows are low, but the high....out of this world. i have had plenty of builds i have tried where after rolls im doing 2k dps. ive also had one where im doing 10kdps (that one was super lucky). The beauty of it is that you can do the prestige grind and get to a point where you have enough rolls at 60 to get something that can complete most content. currently i am at about 95. now that doesn't mean you have to that high, or that you will get the god roll doing 40k dps out of the gate. what it means is you are fairly likely to get your core and you have enough rerolls to replace the trash with simple talents like 3% damage, 3% haste, crit and so on. once you have the cards to guarantee your core (mostly) and the prestige to roll away most of your dead talents it starts feeling a lot better on fresh 60's also with the card changes it's okay to leave some card slots blank. Since you can card at 60 now if there is a talent or skill you need and have open slots you now have 2 avenues of obtaining it. 1 rolling it, or finding the card in open world (if it is out there), or opening it in a pack. tl;dr i really like it because the limit for gains is very high, and your build can always get better. bad lucks sucks, but there are ways to minimize it, even if it may not feel like much.

I think the problem with damage is just the stat scaling of those skills, and really all skills in ascension. I haven’t played it a while, but when I played I noticed some skills did obsurd amounts of damage with no synergy talents, while others did like no damage with all the synergy talents I could get. I think it might a sign to change from the ninja build into something else. It would be nice to see you make a build that’s never been done before, just using your knowledge and experience with how ascension works.

Idk why they did this random talent thing. The only saving grace you had when getting a bad pairing of skills is that you could maybe swap your talents around in a way to make it work. The whole point of the wild card game mode IN MY OPINION was trying to make builds work and improve on what you got. Now it's just full RNG city and if you didn't get what you wanted insta reroll. Definetly not my vibe. I just got to level ten, realized that my talents were random and logged back off lmao.

It's gambling. Project Ascension is gambling. Every change in the past several major content iterations has centered around increasing and diluting the pool of results and increasing the pay-off of getting 'the right stuff', as rare as that may be. There's no profitability in another approach. Now you pay your money for your XP pots, slam out Manastorms to pull the slot machine wheel, and if it doesn't work out you go again. Quite degenerate. It's part of why I really want to see Conquest of Azeroth arrive but I'm worried that it will be so much less profitable compared to the slot machine server that it'll be neglected for the most part (level 60 where?) I appreciate your attempt to stay positive though my dude, at least you gave it a shot!

Hate to see you not enjoying yourself man. I feel validated because they've decided to pander to those who prestige repeatedly. It's not an accomplishment to constantly level to 60 over and over if it takes 30-45 min. The rolls supposedly get better if you have a high number of prestige, I have a char that I prestiged about 17 times and I do agree with that because 2 of my specs I basically got everything I wanted. Ascension as a whole.. it feels like being in a relationship that has just gone stale.. despite my want to play CoA fully released.. I think I'm just done.

The problem isn't really not getting perfect rolls, i never expect that at least. The problem is the hidden pvp mods behind the said skills that are randomized, if you are pvp focused, and newer to the game or season, you have to dig through everything just to find if it is garbo or not in the patch notes. Let's take the shield items for instance, they immediately tell you on the shield, "wearing this will lower your damage to players". Why is there no tooltip on skills to show you the same function, so you can make a decision right away on if you should try this or not, it's been this way for too long. I didn't mind it at first, and I'm no number one pvper or nothing, but I don't want to dig through pages of crap every skill roll anymore.

Chapter 2 is too little, and *far* too late. The idea of wildcard for everything is interesting on paper, but as a practical concept it utterly fails to deliver either experimentation or build diversity, instead the sheer difficulty of "completing" a build pushes players in the opposite direction of only playing a tiny handful of known high performance builds to ensure that their time and effort isn't utterly wasted.

Tbh i know how you feel, it's very rng heavy, but honestly you should not think you would be guaranteed a build for that few rolls, and your skillcards. there might be a possibility that you can't make the build with your current skill cards (the build need to much or very specific cards to work) But i'm also someone who dont play casual. But you have to think rolls like a sort of optimization like gear in a way, the more you play the better you get. Eksampel: In retail or any other wow expansion, if you played 100hours and you play against someone with 50 hours, you have full enchanted pvp gear from ratedbg's or arena "harder content" than the other player that's only playing casual bg's with some pvp gear (in lower rarities). Ofc you would have the edge. The gap should be noticeable otherwise the progression would not be the same. It's difficult for sure with the rng aspect, but understand the progession before you blame the way the game is setup. Hope this shows a perspective you have not thought of. And tip: dont compare dmg on people that plays some of the tankiest tanks in the game.

Idk why they keep trying to force this everything random shit. Its literally of no benefit for anyone, besides ascension ofc cuz people better grind their asses off and buy more xp buffs! And having the talents be random as well is the most pure form of idiocy. More than half of what make a build work is the talents and having random BS given to you left and right literally makes it impossible to make anything playable 99% of the time. At least before when u could pick your talents u could make even the shit spells u got playable to some extent... I feel miserable just watching the videos.

Tbh i can't stand this season. I tried it at the start, did 12 full runs of 1 to 60 an the most I got was like 60% of a build done after hundreds of rerolls. So I haven't played it since. Last season I felt was ny far one of the best ones. This one has driven myself, an many others away.

I played a really old version of Ascension some years ago. I haven't touched it since, and the game looks incredibly different. Your videos have definitely made me apprehensive at giving it another shot, especially since without knowing the meta, you could easily have a character that feels like your two did: powerless.

I actual form a Build with searing and atal ai totem in Kombination with imp and wild imp and for own damage arcane missile its all time while leveling in the top dmg on dungeons and battleground and i am now lvl 60 and have After massive rerolls not all talents i need for, so i imagine how much damage i have when i get all talents i actual dont have

I love ascension but i always end up leaving again after a few weeks because I'm sick of being dicked over with RNG i get so close to a useable build only to get screwed by the legendary. 18 start overs the last time i played (probably nothing compared to other people) but it's so disheartening getting to level 60 only to do literally no damage because you're missing that 1 talent/ability...
