This month, we highlight community examples with a 3D squirrel, a newcomer to Character Animator and After Effects making a children's web series, and a video game streaming police officer. Then we dive into some tips on tags and handles, recording arm and hand animations, and how to add a simple shadow in After Effects. We then show how to turn a 5-year-old's crayon monster drawing into an animated puppet, and finish with a (much requested!) Photoshop illustration tutorial.

No problem. Anytime you want to show the 3D squirrel in action for your future videos is okay with me. From the second episode on, I will try to use some movie magic for his opening background scenes. I hope you like it.

Very inspiring and making me excited to jump into Character Animator. I've been watching ALL of your videos to get a good grasp on things. I can tell you already that there is definitely so much more that you could cover... and I'll be looking out for them all. I'm just coming over after years of using Cartoon Animator from Reallusion. I think that if Character Animator ever adds the ability to add cameras and place things into 3D space without having to jump to After Effects, this program will be a game changer.

Thank you very much for keep uploading these every month (: Very helpful and informative and fun to watch. I'm always having trouble remembering or knowing the correct names and signs (like the +).. I tried to google a good picture/table that shows all the correct layer names and order and couldn't find any (could be that i didn't look hard enough). Anyway... Was wandering if you know if there's a Jpg/PDF that shows that somewhere? (: Thanks and keep up the awesome work

There's a structure here without the independent parts: helpx.adobe.com/adobe-character-animator/using/prepare-artwork.html. Really the only things that have to have the + are the +Character group, +Left Eyebrow, +Right Eyebrow, +Left Pupil, and +Right Pupil. And this is a blank template: adobe.ly/2frsOOG

Here's a tip and trick you can add to a video. When playing with behaviors, such as Walk, I suggest you use your cell phone to take a photo of the default settings -- before you start making changes in the settings. I will fiddling around with the walk cycle settings and really messed myself up. I was only able to fix it by deleting the behavior and then adding it again to the character. So now I make sure I take a snapshot first! ...Rowby

Thanks. Agreed, the way that the puppet default settings are different from the scene settings can be pretty confusing. We'll be working on it.

Hey Dave, much compliments to this excellent tutorial. Especially I like your part for kids, what really is a wonderful entrance into working with Adobes character animation without any fear! Please allow me one question at that point: How the finished animation can be shared for example with an Android user or a windows pc. I did not find a way yet to save an .mp4 file ect. Thank you very much for an answer and say hello to your little partner he did a great job I'll show all my 7 grandchildren!
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So in the File > Export menu there is an option to send to Adobe Media Encoder. That's where you can export the scene out in a wide variety of formats, including an mp4 file.

hi, i wonder is there another way without using camera to move puppet ? not the trigger i mean completly without camera. also kinda hope there more small apps just for the puppet since this adobe or other apps like facerig a bit need power , so it's become burden when use with with big games
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could turn the camera off and do everything with key triggers. And yes, I think a future where other apps can read .puppet files sounds great to me.

Interesting that FivoAnthO gets more pronounced mouth movement with a lapel mic. I wonder if the laviler mic is just a better mic and picking up a fuller frequency range.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, typically the louder and closer the mic is sans clipping, the more accurate results the lip sync gets. It's an interesting experiment I hadn't heard of before.

There's a little blue zoom number in the bottom right of the puppet panel. I also use option + mouse scrollwheel as a zoom shortcut.

Hello Dave can you tell me how to do a front view, like the view of the character, please?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
You would just have to draw it that way in PS or AI - I make most of my characters at 3/4 view, looking slightly to the side. You would just need to adjust their facial features and limbs slightly to have them head on. On okaysamurai.com/puppets see Dude, Red Monster & Cassandra - all of them are front-facing.
@johannamendez7742
@johannamendez7742 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave for your answer, but I mean what it is watching, for example, if they are holding a cell phone or a book and you only see their hands and phone, as in the video the weather girls that you showed us. I also want to know how to move the puppet walking backward and forward, not left and right.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
I think that Weather Girls episode was made before walk was added, so I believe she did most of that in After Effects. Currently the walk behavior is optimized for left/right movement, so to do towards / away from camera walks you'd probably want to do a cycle layers walk (like the Wonder Boy character from our examples page) and then scale him up/down in After Effects. Not an easy way to do it natively in CH (yet).

Why the legs don't move in the program ?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
You need to add draggables like the arms (or cycle layers frame-by-frame animation) if you want legs to move.

@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
You need to either a) turn down eye gaze > camera strength, or b) instead of the full circle eyeball being tagged as the eyeball, make a half circle for each eye and tag those as the "pupil range" option for the left and right. Then the pupil will stick to just that half circle.

Do you definitely have the latest CH (Beta 6)? If so NDI should show up in your live output preferences. You can also download the "NDI Monitor" tool from their site to make sure it's working. If it is and it's still not showing up, can you file a bug report at forums.adobe.com/community/character-animator/character-animator-bug-reports.

I would like to do the following 1) have open a PDF document file that will record on screen as I talk through it with my character 2) I would like my character to be in the bottom right of the screen talking through the PDF file. the final video would have PDF document and character at bottom talking through it - I may annotate with Wacom pen on PDF file as character reads or talks through it. Could you explain the process for doing this please?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 7 жыл бұрын
Is this live or recorded? If live, bring CH & a PDF editor as sources into OBS, Wirecast, or other live streaming options. If recorded, just do a screen capture of editing the PDF while you talk, then import the audio into CH and do Timeline > Compute Lip Sync From Scene Audio. Merge the two in Premiere or After Effects.

@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 5 жыл бұрын
Yes - you can import PNGs, but if you want to do things like have the eyes and mouth move, you'll need to make it into a layered PSD or AI file. A PNG by itself will move around with your head and/or drag the hands around with a mouse, but that's pretty much it.
