Literally though - Before any of this really go mainstream - I was very curious about a book at a comic convention (some conventions have novelists there too) and I was thinking of supporting them by purchasing the book - until I asked if they had made the novel drawings themselves. They said it was AI art and I didn't end up purchasing the book. As an artist, reader and writer, I morally could never support AI as a substitute for creativity.

Both my art and my writing has been scraped for commercial AI datasets, and I'm sad and disgusted that there's nothing I can do to stop this. I'm so relieved to hear that you don't support this shit. Thank you for supporting real artists!

Thank you for this video and for not gatekeeping. Can you do a video on HOW and WHERE to find a manuscript editor? I’m really skeptical about using Fivver, etc..

That means a lot, thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. For manuscript editors, I haven't had the best experiences myself, so I don't have a ton of people I'm confident to recommend, but I did enjoy working with Enchanted Ink (Natalia Leigh is the owner) a lot. Also I found editors on Reedsy, but most of them were extremely pricey. I wish I had more suggestions, but hope that helps!

Thank you this was so helpful. I completely agree with you on the AI. Plus my sister went to Art School and she would KILL me if I ever even considered using AI. Though I have seen some stock photos that were AI and an extra finger would be doing good. Some picks just looked like two works split down the middle and combined together.

Adobe has its own AI generator that was trained on the stock photos. It labels the art as AI. Artists opt in or opt out to have their works used in their system. So, there is ethically trained AI out there. I don't mind AI, probably because I grew up on Star Trek. They've talked about this very problem for decades. I would love to have Data as my friend. I think there will be room for both human and AI creatives in the future. That being said, you're correct that there are Borg sized problems with the technology right now. I would still hire human artists for certain projects. Just as I would use AI for others. One thing I would never do is pass off AI as a human created. But that's me. 🤷‍♀️😅

Great vid!! I have a possible recommendation for people that would not have the money for covers and no time to learn to draw: Inkscape is similar to illustrator but it's free and there's a lot you can make for a cover with just vectors that require less time learning than drawing (depending on your budget it can be turned into foiled designs as well) it would not be character oriented but at least it's actually yours compared to ai (logos by nick has really good tutorial too)

Question, does anything change if you want to do endpaper art and how? Also, does ingram spark or kdp let you customize the endpapers?

Just wanting to bring up another perspective about AI art (hopefully without getting attacked because i know a lot of people hate it) but ai art does provide opportunities for authors like me to generate art for their books when we cant afford to hire artists and i always either create a rough concept in canva and have stuff generated from it and also do a google image search to make sure the art isnt stolen. But a budget is a real problem. Its one thing if its for a single book or a cover but i have an entire galaxy and will be doing a galaxy guide of all the planets and creatures and cant afford to hire someone to do each one. Its just too much. Same with character or creature art which right now i just use as inspiration and havent sold it. Im afraid of being attacked or boycotted so i havent sold ai art yet but its still just the only way some of us can afford it and there are ways of making sure no ones art or work is stolen.

If your worry about AI is that others will stop reading your novels, or buying your artwork, or movies, then I think we can easily set that fear aside. People develop attachments to their favorite artists, and that's not going to change. If your concern is that you'll lose your livelihood, then that's a more valid concern, but also moot since most people are going to be in that position in the next 20yrs or so. AI is the next industrial revolution. It's going to completely upend society even more so than the internet. My guess is that we will land in a post-labor society at some point, where most goods / services are provided through AI labor. People will still work, but because they want to, not because they have to. You will still create, you will still have an audience, you just won't be struggling to make ends meet while you do it. It's going to be a very rough transition to that point though, I'll give you that.

I don't like AI as well. It's such a danger in this society, and it's really scary. So many people can lose their jobs because of AI. Like, even we can as writers. I remember working with an artist for my first book; she did just a good job, and she even helped me out with my book cover that I was designing since lightning/shadow are my weak point. She would give advices on those points, and I loved my character art from her. But, I think it's also a win/win. Us authors gets more exposure to potential readers and the artists also get more exposure esp. to those who are starting

FIver, Upwork allows you to hire artists. I'm shocked you're only getting $4 on a $30 book. That's ludicrous

I support real human artists, for sure. But im not sure all the nuances of AI art are being dealt with here. First, AI art IS art. Just because an algorithm created it doesnt disqualify it as art. After all, if pissing on the cross on stage is "art" then AI created artwork certainly qualifies as "real art". Second, i can't help but wonder how portrait artists must have felt when the camera all but destroyed the demand for their services. Third, all the AI services I've looked at have commercial pricing and caveats. It varies by service but using AI art to profit from is rarely "free". Fourth, i understand that ppl are bothered by the fact that AI is "learning" by ingesting other artists work. But i might ask, is this any different really than what human artists do when studying artists of yesteryear? The big difference would be the speed with which the algorithm can learn versus us mere mortals. Finally, there is access. And by access i mean... cost. Human artist... $500-$4000. AI... (Midjourney for example)... $10. Anyone can scrounge $10, but $1000? Im wondering... do I not get to publish my book because i simply can't afford a human artist? I think AI has its place. If it were up to me I'd outlaw AI completely. It's not up to me though, so now what? Regardless I think a real conversation about all this is important and not just demonizing people that choose to utilize AI. PS: i dont think the average reader actually cares about AI at all. (Which is unfortunate.) Only bookstagrammers and booktokers care about this subject. (Which is also unfortunate.)

I never said it's not art, I said it's often *stolen* art because it's trained on images by artists who didn't give permission... important difference! But there is some AI that's not stolen, so if authors are going to use it, it would be smart to look into that.
