I've been trying to design a version of my avatar that I would be happy with. I I have the color scheme, and I know the general outfit, but I'm never happy with the anatomy and head shape. I think I'm getting closer to something that I'll be happy with, it's just going to have to take a few more rounds of design.

I don't even know what I might need a stylized self-portrait for... but I'm gonna do it now! (I've tried before, but this vid has inspired me to actually go somewhere with it.) Btw, what originally made me do it was that, one day in art school, a friend of mine was sketching me from across the room (I was standing by a wall looking down at my phone - my standard pose, teehee). She has a very precise photographic approach to sketching that art teachers always gave her trouble for. But I looked at her notebook and - even upside down - recognized ME on the page. That made me focus on the parts that made it recognizable, and later I drew some avatars of me for various assignments, that I wasn't ashamed of ;)

I tried to do one of those drawing-a-day things for October, but where I created a self-insert OC for a lot of the shows/video games I liked. I only made it half way through because I ran out of ideas (and constantly drawing stuff with such similar traits was getting kind of boring) but at least now I have some extra character designs under my belt.

I like to give some of my characters small traits that I have and branch off from there to make something unique. Example: a character in my comic could wear clothing that I like to wear or has a similar flaw/skill or even a personality trait.

Yes! Thank you for this video. I constantly try making personas but they never stick and I just turn them into OCs...I kinda just created characters that were what I liked, not what I was. I will totally try drawing other people as characters first!

These might be very specific questions, but how do you decide what you wear (like do you chose based on what you normally wear or in what shows your personality best) and also, if you are making a persona for a fantasy world, how do you decide what traits and looks to give yourself to show who you are, but also show the fantasy elements you wish to combine with yourself (without one overpowering the other too much) Also, thank you so much for this video because I have a fun time designing all sorts of characters, but when it comes to personas, I always have trouble, so thank you so, so much for the great help!!!! :D

I think the best part of my character disign is color pallet, bright acid yellow as a complimentary color to main blue just somehow works

One difficulty I have is that the things that make a person recognizable (eye shape, proportions, etc.) don't really survive my cartoon simplification process. Any tips on balancing that? Great video as always!

I'm 20 but my mother still is very insistant to give me "advice" when i buy clothes so i kinda don't get to determine my irl look which makes designing a persona a challenge

I heard someone say that we are always drawing ourselves-but it’s kinda hard to do it deliberately! I definitely draw my hands on characters, I’ve given characters my body shape, hair texture, height, etc...and yet, I put it all together and go, “Ew, who is that?”

My self portrait persona (or as i like to call it) “In universe me” i never really went hard on making it one to one or even remotely similar to “me” but personality is, now i may not have red hair psychic powers or a crystal sword im still happy with my real life and character self (Though i do want to recreate the outfit)

When you draw these do you keep in mind how tall a character is heads tall? Ive been so paranoid about keeping something proportional that sometimes I think it stuns me from pushing shapes

Clothing is the hard part.

I've had the same persona for years and I don't think I'll ever change it. It's just me with a bun but it's very simple and unique in my own way. :D

I'm more into building mascots over personas, but this is good stuff to know.

Me not knowing what represents me and who I am to myself and how I would want my persona to look like based off of that. Worst part is to decide if the hair should be long or short. I want a persona to represent myself as well as things I want to be, even if it's fantasy. I did draw myself in the place where people been using sona's instead. And now I want to create a persona to represent me. But it's difficult to not let it look like me since if I just drew me again it would just stay the same. in reality I just look really boring.

It would be cool to see you analyse character designs of other artists with reference to the progression of the concept sketches leading up to the final look. It shows the thinking process which is cool. I learn to code by copy pasting other folk's work and fiddling around with it. Maybe examples are good way of learning elsewhere. good vid btw avatars really help creators stand out and show that they care
