Is there anyone besides me, who without realizing it, will start to make the facial expression they're trying to draw?

Yeah it's pretty common if you're ever at an art meetup and you take a second to look up at everyone they're usually all making faces.

Yee. All my friends like to draw so sometimes when we're all drawing I'll look at what faces my friends are making and draw it on a body I've already drawn. It ends up looking really interesting. Lol

Actors on a theatre stage are always exaggerating their expressions so that the audience can see how their character is feeling. I must have forgotten that it should be the same way in comics.

during my major 3D animation project at uni, I came in late one day, and this happened to be the day we were filming reference footage for our short. I walked in the door to find our three animators wrapped up in batman capes and jumping off stuff, carrying beachballs while one of our riggers chased them around with a rolling pin. for context, our short was a loony-toons style short about a fruit bat trying to steal fruit from a chef. We ended up getting so much information from the reference footage and looked ridiculous in the process, but it was so worth it! lol

It's amazing, isn't it? Once you realize that you can make emotions using more than just your face, it seems to unlock a whole new world of emotion in your art. Thanks for the emotion wheel, by the way. I could use some practice on the wheel myself, knock a bit of rust off with it. Slightly unrelated, but don'cha find it funny that you tend to make faces whenever you draw the person in question? It's almost natural at this rate, scrunching your face up as you make someone look mad in the image.

It's even worse when you have a cartoony or stylised art style. I always make overly exaggerated faces, due to the way i draw emotions-

3:31 It's not entirely related to the topic at hand but hearing this made me realize why I have trouble figuring out my main character's end goal. I'm mentally a teen and I was recently diagnosed with depersonalization so I don't really know myself yet. This explains why my character feels... incomplete. My character is partially a self-insert, after all. So I'm definitely taking "write what you know" to heart in that aspect. But that said, I wonder how this topic is handled with artists under the autism spectrum, as they usually don't have the greatest sense of understanding facial expressions.

I have Asbugers syndrome, and let's just say that yes, I really do have to put in extra work to get the facial look down. When I look back at some of my previous works, I found that alot of those faces looked stiff and uninteresting since I had trouble with visualizing expressions at the time. Now I'm currently trying to overcome this flaw by learning how subtle facial expressions would look and trying to pay more attention to the faces of characters specifically.

Emotions are definitely hard, especially when you don’t show any feeling or care too much. Isn’t there some anatomy involved with the pulling of the face muscles to move them into different positions or it’s just what you think the face is emoting?
@Shuizid
@Shuizid 4 жыл бұрын
The actual face? We have tons of tiny muscles in the face which all in different ways help us emote. It's one of the vital parts of our social evolution, to allow us to communicate and convey our state of mind to others, long before we developed complex speech.

I think with expressions as with anything else you're learning it's important to start simple and exaggerated I think if you start with big cartoony expressions and you really push the boundries of how your characters face works you'll learn how to apply those same feelings in a more toned down way later. I always think it's key to go crazy at first and then reel it back, rather than start small and go bigger, as that way you can end up very static and stiff.
@CharacterDesignForge
@CharacterDesignForge 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah Very similar to understanding light and shadow- can always tone back later after fully understanding them!

It's time to spin the WHEEL. OF. EMOTION!!!! Jokes aside, I have noticed I tend to either look up movements or reenact them when I need to think of how a character moves or walks. I'll try to remember this about emotion as well.

Great video! I get a lot of compliments on my expression work, and I think one thing that's really helped elevate it is that I keep a running library in my head of expression references from visual media. This is hardly unique to me- it's the entire basis behind using reaction images- but I don't always see it suggested as a means of aiding expression in drawing. It's particularly helpful when I can't quite communicate the emotion I'm going for through a natural expression, so I need to dip into a more abstracted cartoon quality: to pull an example from a recent work, giving a character parallel horizontal lines for pupils to indicate a blindsided shock. But your advice is the grounding for this: you have to develop the emotional framework to know when an expression is "just right" and when it needs more tweaking.

To anyone wanting an acting tip from someone whos never taken an acting class or any kind of lesson but is really just phenomenally good at lying: Acting should never be _acting,_ acting should be tricking yourself into BECOMING whatever you're trying to be. Genuinely convince yourself you are the character you're playing and you'll gey a much more Rich portrayal then trying to consiously _act._ the more you know about the character the easier this becomes.
