In the video we discuss the impact of using charcoal in art, particularly focusing on how the type of marks made with charcoal can influence the perception of color in a drawing or painting. This originated with some observations from spending hours analyzing John Singer Sargent's charcoal drawings in a number of museum. Sargent used different marks for different subjects. This is they key in understanding these techniques to enhance your painting skills.
The presence or absence of lines and their contrast with the background can direct the viewer's attention and create varying levels of importance within a piece. We illustrate this by showing different ways Sargent applied charcoal marks, explaining that more pronounced lines draw attention, while smeared or absent lines create a sense of calm and cause areas to recede.
During this video, we also touch on the historical context of some of Sargent's subjects, such as Nancy Astor, and discuss how Sargent's technique conveyed their personalities and statuses. Sargent's portrayal of people like Churchill highlighted their significance through the use of contrast and texture.
To relate this to painting, we take a moment to demonstrates how different colors and their applications on various toned backgrounds affect their vibrancy. Any toned canvas will generally reduce color vibrancy compared to a white canvas, this means that we need to be careful in our use of background tones to maintain the desired visual impact in a painting.
