I would recommend both those albums, with a few reservations - so maybe listen to a bit of each on KZfaq first... Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. was Brucie’s first album, but the poetic lyrics (there are a lot of them!) and the energy seem fully formed already. Plus, there’s plenty of sax blown by Clarence Clemons, if you like that full-on sound. At times, there’s a Van Morrison ‘soul’ thing going on (he’s really no Van, though!), but ‘Mary Queen of Arkansas’ is stripped-back solo in an almost Nebraska style. The Monsanto Years is basically a direct attack on corporations and in particular the use of genetically modified crops in US agriculture. Parts of it have the warm guitar sound of Crazy Horse - plenty of righteous anger - but the quiet ballad ‘Wolf Moon’ could be from Harvest Moon. As always with late-period Neil, the songwriting quality varies a LOT and some of the lyrics seem unsubtle. I don’t really like ‘People Want to Hear About Love’, for example. Certainly this album is not in the same league as Zuma or Ragged Glory. But if you like his more recent records you will still find things to enjoy. Hope to see a new video from you soon. Take care.
