At John Sollo’s first-ever ROADSHOW event he met a guest named Nancy and discovered an extremely rare mahogany chair lived for many years - unloved and unused - in Nancy’s mother’s attic. When to Nancy’s astonishment Sollo appraised it for $80K to $120K, they each nearly needed to sit down. Here, join both of them again as they reunite to chat about their initial 2006 meeting in Philadelphia.

Is she not the cutest thing ever? I loved her in the follow up. Her little "aren't I greedy" comment was just perfect.

I love this one, because mom is being well taken care of because of a beautiful little mahogany chair that was sitting in the attic. if she’s anything like her daughter shown, she’s a sweetheart, too and deserves it all. this one makes my heart happy.

The actual art appears like something you'd see today. The way the wood was shaped to look like ooze criss crossing over itself. It's really quite amazing and way ahead of it's time. I loved that they had her on the follow up too.

Delightful! This somehow reminded me of the time 4 or 5 decades in the past when my wife & I saw a notice about an "estate sale" in Pebble Beach (Monterey, CA area). So we went to see what it was like. We thought there would likely be treasures in this wealthy community. We discovered it was like any other garage sale. Treasures are where you can find them; more likely in some neighborhood but there's no guarantee.

So true. When an item becomes no longer you can trust to sit on, to put in your house, you're better off in handing it to someone else and using that money for other things whether for investment or pay off your house.

Wow what a beautiful chair. I’m drawn to Art Deco usually but this is so unique, whimsical, and fluid it’s truly an art piece and deserves to be a focal point in any space. Also I would’ve guessed Art Nouveau, not Arts & Crafts. Guess I should get back to learning more about both periods because why not?

oltedders wrong. did you not watch this video? that chair is so arts n crafts style. the appraiser said the correct term. arts and crafts was about nature and natural elements. art deco is not that...that’s geometric shapes. don’t try and fool people in the comment section. people like you suck.

@@cathycasuccio3227 I've been collecting antiques for over 50 years. My specialty is 19th century furniture and decor, 19th century Chinese famille rose porcelain and 19th century Anglo-irish and American cut glass, all of which I collect among other things. I've been studying historical interior decor since I was 14 years old. My fellow collectors and close friends are/were each experts in the fields of Arts & Crafts, Mission, Art Deco and Moderne. Their collections are some of the best in the country. Their expertise is unquestioned. In short, I know what I'm talking about, you obviously don't.

@@oltedders All you are doing is bragging, but you haven't presented a single piece of argument to make your case. Moreover, John Sollo is much more renowned and experienced than you, and he calls the chair Arts and Crafts, which using your own logic, means that he is right and you are wrong.

A buyer's premium at 25% is out of line. That's one quarter of the selling price. 180K times 25% is the 225K she said. Back in the '90s i use to go to antique auctions 2 or 3 times a month for many years. The standard buyer's fee was 10%.

They probably spend a lot more time lining up buyers for an item this expensive (and the dozens of other Arts and Crafts items for sale at the same auction). If you want to sell something for as much as possible, you need to call up every rich collector, museum, foundation etc. in the world and make sure they are represented when the item goes live for bidding. Months of full-time work for a large team.
@jeremyschottey6713

A lot of auctions have a sliding scale for buyer's premiums. For instance; In person is 10%, phone is 15%, and online is 20%. Phone and online necessitate a direct agent to process bids, thus adding to the fees.

After watching this, does anyone else feel there is an industry of "pickers" searching amongst the holdings of us plebes on behalf of the rich to make sure we do not possess antiques that are beyond our station in life? Generally a fun show, but just they way it was worded about how they were encouraged to sell felt wrong.

I'm not trying to be facetious, but what type of buyer would want something like that? Is that just a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" type thing? Like $180k is a lot of money just to have something so eccentric that you can't use

Let's see. My MIL needed round the clock care the last 5 years of her life, so we found a mid range facility... 500/day, private pay, really good care. Do the math. 15k/mo is 180/year. She plowed thru 1.2 the last 6 years of her life
