When I was a boy, my parents took me and my brother on holiday to northern France (Brittany/Normandy) every summer. We would always stay by the coast and I remember my dad humming this tune as we drove down from England. I’ll remember and love this song and France forever.

Just came back from six weeks in France, a week of that spent in Paris. It was a chilly March, there were protests in the streets, I got lost in the red light Pigalle district just trying to find a restaurant that served a good French onion soup, the strikes meant I had to use Uber when the metro and buses were down, but...Paris is still Paris. This and Edith Piaf's classic "La Vie En Rose" pretty much ran through my head every waking hour...that or Jeff Buckley's "Je ne connais pas le fin." In fact when we visited Pere Lachaise cemetery, as we were standing beside Edith Piaf's grave, I serenaded my wife with a rendition of "La Vie En Rose" that I had made the effort the last several months of French lessons to memorize and properly learn to sing. Paris really is a city of music as much as love or lights.

Attention à ne pas prendre une chanson pour une simple musique. Ce sont 2 arts différents. Il faut faire attention car la musique sous l'impulsion du showbiz est en train d'évincer la chanson (aujourd'hui certains chanteurs n'osent plus parler de chanson, pour être programmés ils doivent se dire dans la musique) - . Particulièrement cette chanson "à texte" dont Trénet a été le chef de file.

Merveilleuse chanson!! Quand j’écoutais cette chanson,j’ai été émue au point d’avoir les yeux pleins de larmes! Moi,je suis lycéenne japonaise qui apprends le français. Personnellement, j'aime le plus Charles Trenet parmi les chanteurs français Ses chansons donnent courage à gens.. Mon rêve est visiter la maison natale de Charles Trenet dans Narbonne. Si je pouvais comprendre un peu plus le français ...!

DLTKalyz J'apprécie cette musique. C'est joli et agréable, bien écrit. Mais j'aime bien Radiohead, moi. Et Green Day et All Time Low et My Chemical Romance de temps a autre. J'aime bien Adele et P!nk. J'apprécie cette musique, je sais que c'est de la bonne musique, mais je n'écoute pas ce genre de musique, ça ne m'intéresse pas.

Ich kann kein (bzw. fast kein Wort) Französisch. Aber die Sprache selbst ist ja schon Musik. In Verbindung mit "diesem" Lied, fehlen mir sämtliche Worte. Selbst in meiner Muttersprache. Tout simplement surnaturel, fantastique!!!!👍👍

I heard that this song came to him on a train. He had nothing to write on, but then found a piece of scrap paper stuffed down the side of his seat and this was the result! I love his songs. In fact I love all those old French chanteurs and chanteuses. Their songs are so simple, yet so profound.

I love that he "helps" the music and his singing with gestures. This is a man of a type now long gone. People are too easily ashamed of what little they do nowadays, how they show themselves, and don't see how important it is to convey the love for what you are singing about. People, world, take note. The melody is simply beautiful. Charles Trenet composed not just one fantastic song "La mer" that is one of my favorites but two! "Que reste-t-il de nos amours?" ("I wish you love") So talented. I really admire people who can compose music.

En effet, mais ce qui est triste (pour moi), c'est que tout comme Gainsbourg, il a déclaré que la chanson était un art mineur, qu'il détestait par ailleurs qu'on lui parle de ses chansons plus anciennes, que seules l'intéressaient ses récentes, que pour lui les autres n'existaient plus, et que, de toute façon, il préférait de loin la littérature à la chanson, se désolait que ses livres (poésie) ne soient pas reconnus, son plus vif regret étant de ne pas avoir été admis à l'Académie française. Quant à moi, art mineur ou non (je m'en f…), j'adore la chanson française, et suis navrée que ce très grand artiste en ce domaine (Brassens disait : "Notre maître ; sans lui, nous ne serions pas là"…) en ait parlé ainsi. Bon, cela n'enlève rien à la valeur de ses chansons, les premières (tant pis pour lui) comme les autres. On les écoutera toujours avec bonheur, me direz-vous… Mais tout de même !…

I get goosebumps from this song and it’s so simple nice bass line, nice piano, etc. And you couldn’t fake this back in the day this recording was done live, everyone together, no sound effects just pure skill.
