Sowing dates, no rush in early May

I show the low soil temperature zone 8 on 3rd May, and have not yet sown climbing or French beans. This coming week is good but under cover so that germination is strong and seed not wasted.
The word "bean" covers many possibilities. The broad beans behind me were sown November and soybeans for Edamame a week ago, in the greenhouse.
See online course 2 for more about how and when to sow, grow and harvest charlesdowding.co.uk/product/...
See my website Sowing Timeline for best dates for each vegetable.

I have found keeping to any kind of time table very difficult this year, it took literally months for my seed orders to come through so my whole time table has gone to pot. Still I am battling on, it will just mean that everything will be a little late this year. My old grandad who was head gardener on an estate, always used to say that Spring was a lot longer than people thought and that one week in warm ground was worth a month in the cold. Thank you so much for all your advice, I just loved your books. Just shows that this old dog CAN learn new tricks.

I’ve been sowing furiously in the last few weeks, I’m still amazed when they become plants! This is my first year ever of gardening, and if there’s a space something goes in it, so under the big olives in pots, oak leaf lettuce, strawberries and purple and holy basil. Hey you should watch some of the vids on how to grow potatoes! Growing them in containers is all the rage, now! Good luck! If you have a sunny spot, water, and a grow bag / bucket and some dirt, you can grow stuff! May I suggest cucumber, zucchini, and even tomato? No need to stake the tomato, let it hang down off the balcony! Same for the cucumbers / zucchini!

Another over eager new gardener. I'm in Midlands. Too eager without a greenhouse I planted out my 40 cm cucumbers outside since we had this amazing weather and they are nearly dead after rains. The other two in conservatory already flowering and cherry tomatoes set fruit. Have some kitchen pantry beans growing and they desperately wanted repotting, but was having hard time getting pots and compost so planted outside... Lost all old leaves but made new solid green ones - completely new texture and look! Interesting how condition changes the look of the plants.

Love your channel Charles, am doing no dig wherever I can...even trying with runner beans this year, though I’m not confident I’ll get a good crop without digging in lots of ‘muck’ in the trench, which is my normal method. Have fingers crossed though...put lots of rotted manure on the surface instead!

My broad beans are only 3 inches tall. That is actually good for the beginning of May in my area of Canada. I am hoping to sew more in August for a fall crop. I did plant a few things a wee bit early but I am lucky and it has paid off. Nothing so big as to eat any of it yet. We are eating chives, garlic chives, some wild mustard greens and some pea greens. Not bad for this time of year in Eastern Ontario. Wild garlic amps are up but fiddle head ferns are just peaking out. We too are experiencing a bit of a cool week ahead. Thank goodness for row covers and frost blankets!

I must start planting out soon, I can barely move in the Polytunnel, trays of seedlings and potted plants everywhere. I’ll be lucky if I don’t break my neck. The greenhouse is worse, I have to crawl on my hands and knees under the peach and nectarine trees that are waiting to go out, they are on lock down, I don’t want them catching anything. I don’t know what the neighbours must think, when they see me crawling in and out. Thanks for the video Charles.

I was planning on setting out most of my warm weather seedlings this week, but now we are getting a cold front coming through the midwest with the weekend lows down to 32° F!! The worst thing about my climate seems to be the weather fluctuations. Nearly 80° F this weekend and now, unexpectantly back down to freezing. I will probably have to bring ALL my potted plants and seedling trays BACK inside this weekend. It's going to be a huge chore, since I drive my family crazy by transforming my kitchen into a temporary grow room from Feb. to May. I just took down all the shelving and lights and cleaned everything up thinking it was over.😥😧😕

I now have trays of lettuce, cabbage, peas, potted up tomatoes, bell peppers and courgettes from sowings made at beginning of lock down crowding out my greenhouse and every available space on window sills! I think I may have gone overboard a bit and am becoming impatient waiting for the weather to warm up so they can be planted outside. Keeps me busy though. 🙃🇬🇧👍

In the spring we mix up all the dirt in the planters as it's the first material thawed, so we can start seedlings in the window, but every year as the season continues, this material starts to become more and more like a composite base, and when we water in the seeds, the surface becomes a solid mat that is difficult for the seedlings to split open. We use all sorts of materials in the soil, specifically to keep this from happening. It's as if the short-tiny fibers of the dry moss is stitching together the soil. we've looked up different causes for hardpan, including iron, and ran through the dirt with a magnet to pull out the excess, which there was some, but not enough for that to be the cause. It's definitely a bit of a puzzle, should we slake down the dirt in water to separate the ingredients and start over? It's already mixed completely so that the material has a single quality. It's almost like the soil is too light and fluffy by the time the mix starts to create this layer on top, and it's a little spongy too.
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 4 жыл бұрын
Your dirt is too mixed and fine, therefore can settle to solid, with not enough fibres or structure. Mix less! And best in fact use pure compost, whose fibres allow air to remain in there and water to be used, or pass through.

Thanks for that. I do often feel like I'm a bit slow off the mark seeing all the stuff you get going under fleece in February. I did sow my brassicas a month ago and they're doing well in the greenhouse, I shan't be planting them out for another month, however. Broad beans are basically vetches aren't they? Now the hawthorn's out I'm starting to think about planting out beets and turnips, but I shall take the hint and not feel pressured about it yet.

UK is zones 7 - 10. With the majority of the country being zone 8, the south west coast of England & Wales being zone 9 and inland parts of Scotland and northern England being zone 7. This is due to north Atlantic current providing the UK with warmer waters which allow mild winters and its moist summer climate. London by latitude at 51.5° N is about 350 miles further north than Ottawa & montreal in Canada.

Hello Charles, aaah the impatience is my weak side when it comes to sowing/planting. A good example was when this years i sown heirloom tomatoes from saved seeds as early as in February, indoors, good soil from the shop, even a bit of auxiliary lighting, fertilizing once per week. Beautiful plants arose up to 0,5m and then i transplanted them in mid April to my poly tunnel when i got chance to move them by car from my flat. Just one night with 0°C was enough to do the ugly damage. eventually they are shooting new leaves but anyone who could see them would believe they just died (leaves brown, stems bent/crumpled). not hardening them slowly by bringing them outdoors was a mistake..
