A quick look at how I harvest spring onions and radish in April. From clumps multisown September and February respectively.
Few weeds thanks to no dig. Before transplanting the spring onions, in October, I spread 3cm/1in of homemade compost. Same in winter on the other beds, including where we transplanted the radish in early March, 44 days before this video.
Filmed in Homeacres small garden 16th April 2020 by Stephanie Hafferty using my phone.
Sorry the sound is quiet

You've got a convert here Charles. I had a veggie patch, 4x8 yards on soil. I had a serious heart issue a year ago so cant dig. Following your instructions all was covered in cardboard then 5" of year old horse manure. Found some 3 year old seeds in the cupboard, added some more form the internet, and now I have 10 different types of veggies growing in modules. I've also filled 4 compost bins, ordered a thermometer. I'll let you know how it goes 😊 Thank you for sharing your hard-earned wisdom so freely.

Growing up on a farm I have great memories of my grandfather working his veg patch. 25 years on the great Monty don, titchmarsh and radio 2 Terry Walton sparked my passion for growing veg again. I spent weeks digging my weedy, couch grass patch only for it all to grow back with vengeance months later. Disheartened and fed up i stumbled upon Charles dowdings 'no dig'. I've not looked back since. Easier, better crops, less time weeding, aesthetically pleasing. Thanks to Charles gardening is fun and doesn't feel like a chore. Thank you Charles

I'm just starting out and taken in all mixed knowledge and advice. From Martin crowford's forest gardening (even have mature birch, pine and other trees to get me started) and perrenial veg, yearly veg and not dig from Charles and flower care and design from Monty Don(really enjoyed his beginners audio book) and other shows on design ideas :). My garden just started shaping up and I can't wait for a few years to see where it gets me!

Lovely. I have carrots and spring onions coming on from over the winter, although I am envious of your gorgeous full sun garden. Still, even with a few hours of sun a day, I was able to harvest cabbage and herbs, enough for dinner, two days ago. The cabbage didn't heart up but I still had enough gorgeous green leaves and didn't need to go to the grocery store. Hurray for homegrown. 'They grow with their mates...' Haha! Love that!

Probably not. Takes a lot to make apps... whole teams of developers. Or maybe only one or two... not sure how much is needed. Maybe the simplest thing is to subscribe and pay Charles. And then Charles could send from his own calendar and it could be set up where if you have been added since you subscribe to that calendar then you get notifications because you have a pay subscription. I would love that. I have iCalender and Google calendar. Charles could make sowing events in his calendar. Just an idea. But also there is the problem of different zones for planting, which means different timing.

@@katherandefy Even without an app. Just find his last frost date, and count backwards on the calendar you can buy from him. Mark the number of days before first frost, or final frost, and highlight that week in your phone's calendar with an alert. That's what I plan on doing when my calendar gets here. We are in very different zones, so I have a little math to do, but it will be very much worth it.

Now I have nice clumps of spring onions coming up together and looking perfectly happy to be growing that way. I just discovered that UMass at Amherst have a no-dig veggie garden (in fact several by now) on campus, right beside their cafe which now uses their no-miles no-dig food. Hi Charles, I love your videos and I’ve been watching you for years. You have been the inspiration behind a lot of my gardens. When it comes to bunch planting radishes, do you find all varieties do this well or are there certain types of radish that do better? I find my French breakfast faddish don’t this very well. Thanks Charles, your garden is absolutely gorgeous as always 🙏🏻🙌🏻

Charles you make it all look so easy, got inspired and with great enthusiasm started multlisowing beats, peas, radishes and onions...but instead of being able to harvest like you...my beats and peas were enjoyed by mice/birds I guess and no sign of onions yet after a few weeks and only few radishes have shown up...yes, I don't have a very good compost layer like yours but the soil is virgin and nutrient rich...seed is not a problem as bought from reputed company and they are in date...not sure what's happening...help please...

Sorry to hear this Divya and it sounds like you are sowing direct in the ground? I mostly propagate undercover because of those pest problems, and the extra warmth to help germination.

@@CharlesDowding1nodig OMG, Charles actually replied to my post, I am super thrilled. Thank you Charles, tried the second lot of beets and peas by germinating inside but still the same fate, the beets wilted soon after transplanting and peas were eaten again, I am not giving up...now trial number 3 on way..

I’m following you Charles and today I was picking from my multi sowed raddishes , my lettuces are coming on nicely too, and as for my beetroots in one raised bed without the horse man growing quite well although it did have a layer of Well rotted manure applied in the Autumn but in another bed I have the same multi grown beetroot planted through horse manure applied in October, looks like they are struggling a little and all the tiny leaves are a red/ purple colour! Any idea why this would be Charles ? Anyway the weather is now improving and things will soon be taking off! Keep safe Charles, see you in the next video! 👍

Another question.. I am planing out our garden for this year. I'm going to do a plot about 20 ft x 40 ft ish.. with different size little planting areas in it. Walk ways about 1ft wide between each one.. Would 3 x 3 sections in it be to small? Some of them will be 3 ft x 5 ft and potatoes I think I will do 4ft by 4 ft sections.

Sounds great, it is perhaps more time to go 3x3, with bore bed-to-path-edge (no wood for sure) and mainly its aesthetic, your call. I like 4x6ft.

I love the idea of multi-sowing! Do the plants take a little longer to mature when multi-sown? I feel like your U.K. climate works really great for it - slow steady increase and decrease in temperatures, never super hot. I feel like here in Northern Illinois, U.S. our temperature changes are more drastic (early spring is a raging battle between winter and early summer temperatures, late spring lasts about 4 days, summer can get pretty hot 30C and higher, autumn can come crashing down suddenly going from 25C to 2C in a matter of a week, then going back up to 7C or 10C). I'd like to do an experiment this year and test multi-sown vs. single-sown. What would you recommend as the best test subject plants for such a test?

🤠Having finished my online courses (brilliant content and presentation) I am now planning for this year’s garden. I have Charles’ online planting calendar and understand that it is for your location at Somerset and we share the same plant hardiness zone (8a). However the similarities seem to differ from there. My latitude is 45 north, yours is 49 north My last frost (50% probability) 4/28 yours 3/21 (based on flawed research?) My first frost (50% probability) 10/18 yours 10/15 (?) I have much warmer weather after spring rains into mid-May many days mid-70s to mid-80s + F and 25+ days 95+ running into September. (Had 116’ day in July 2021!) I know Charles considers many other factors when creating his planting calendar. I’m wondering what adjustments to make for my location (maybe moving everything back a month in spring?-seems like a lot.) While having similar light early spring I will be getting LESS light later in the spring where you will have about 1 more hour by summer solstice. Spring light into mid-late May tends to be behind the clouds-I am about 70 miles East from the Pacific Ocean with a low mountain range between. Plenty of rain till about mid-May and starting about mid-June very little rain, but pretty much full sun until late September. The significant rains return in November. Semi oceanic/Mediterranean climate model. I will sew under cover and plan to use row covers for a period after planting out. A goal would be to succession plant for 2nd/3rd crops if possible. I know Charles is pretty busy. If he has an opportunity to share his thoughts about planting calendar adjustments I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks for this Mark. I'm glad you enjoyed the courses. Your data is not all correct. My latitude is 51, my last frost is 15th May, my first Frost is usually late October. Yes here it's more oceanic so winters are milder and summers are less hot. These two factors tend to balance out the sowing dates of my advice. Feedback suggests they work well for climates such as yours. Actually people for example in Maryland, which I believe is 5B, sow at similar times, although a little later just in early spring would be good in my opinion! In summary, I would use very similar dates to what I suggest, and you will need to fine tune for sure, practice and try a few different things every year. Always the weather varies though, which is why these dates remain pretty constant across quite a range of climatic conditions.

@@CharlesDowding1nodig Charles, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I understand you have been very busy narrating your new book. I apologize for the inaccurate data I had for your location (don't know if it was my bad or the website I used). Could have saved us both some time. I garden in a community garden of 100 plots (extra production is donated to organizations providing fresh foods to those in need), started NoDig effectively last year after building a 3 bay compost system on a neighboring gardeners plot 4' cubed bays,(love composting...) My neighboring gardeners are asking a lot of questions which I try to answer but then send them your way (with full praises for your world wide outreach and generous sharing of your knowledge). Will be interesting to see how many converts are generated in the next few years. I will doing my best to demonstrate the many benefits of NoDig by example. Leading by example does bring change, in your case by the 10's of thousands at a time. Congratulations to you and your staff for your amazing work. You have my total respect and gratitude.
