Singer-songwriter Charley Crockett visits the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to share why Freddy Fender's music and story inspired his musical growth and artistry.
"When I was a kid, Freddy was everywhere and he was everything," Crockett says, talking about their shared upbringing in small-town San Benito, Texas. ". . . When I got a little older and started looking more into his music, I started recognizing his early work . . . He really pioneered a version of rock & roll that I really think we're yet to uncover in America."
In the 2021 installment of the Museum's annual exhibition "American Currents: State of the Music," Charley Crockett and Freddy Fender were paired in the "Unbroken Circle" section, meant to illustrate the connection between country music’s past and present.
