Synopsis :- The famed detective seeks to unmask a killer on a voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, this story is primarily a remake of the (now) lost movie, Charlie Chan Carries On, (1931) starring Warner Oland. The story has been updated to include more Charlie, but it would be nice to have the missing movie to compare against.Readers and moviegoers of America greeted Chan warmly. Chan was seen as an attractive character, portrayed as intelligent, heroic, benevolent, and honorable; this contrasted the common depiction of Asians as evil or conniving which dominated Hollywood and national media in the early 20th century. However, in later decades critics increasingly took a more ambivalent view of the character. Despite his good qualities, Chan was also perceived as reinforcing condescending Asian stereotypes such as an alleged incapacity to speak idiomatic English and a tradition-bound and subservient nature. Many observers also now find it objectionable that the role was played on screen by European-American actors in yellowface, although the supporting characters of his family were cast with actual Asian-American actors, such as Keye Luke.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s I watched this series of Charlie Chan movies run time and time again on TV so much so friends called me Charlie Chan's adopted number one son. 1:15:48

By the way for anyone watching who is curious and wonders dimes How dimes representative of silver coins (like the new testament story) well the dimes back in the 40s were made of silver... I know because once upon a time I came across a 1942 I think it was silver dime. I just couldn't believe it.

Good thing he wasn't. He was a great comic in his own right (Ellery Queen's Penthouse Mystery, 1941) and with his frequent partner Ben Carter. But there is already plenty of comic relief with any of Charlie's crazy sons, and he was simply too much of a good thing.

GM did a great job, I'm just waiting for OEM replacement performance high flow filters to be available. The only real test is at a dragstrip under similar conditions and dead hooking up. I saw little to no improvement in the past on the C8 I owned previously with an aftermarket CAI at the dragstrip. I'm just going to go with high flow filters on my new Z06.

I always like Sen Young as Charlie Chan's Son. Why didn't Bonanza use him as their cook, instead of Benson Fong ? Does anyone out there know the answer to that question ?

**To answer the original question: Bonanza DID use Victor Sen Yung as Hop Sing, the cook. Benson Fong had a supporting role in two episodes.

This movie has many same situations as another Charlie Chan film. The disguise, the diguised man being seen together with the murderer as an alibi, all suspects together in the same room to be questioned in every Chan film, at least 3 death around the same time etc.

That never bothered me until someone pointed it out, and you're right about the distortion. I've seen that in other movies, and everyone looks like they weight 300 pounds.

News Note: Leo G. Carroll exposed as the Murderer. This Actor best known as the Chief in the Later TV Series "Man from U.N.C.L.E." from the 1960s. In this role he was up to mischief !!

Before that series he was Cosmo Topper in the 1950s series, Topper. Robert Sterling played George Kirby and Anne Jeffries played Marianne Kirby. Lee Patrick played his wife. And my friends bought Leo G. Carroll’s house in Whitley Heights. Beautiful 1920s home.

I iove Charlie Chan. I have read all 6 novels and have watched many of the films. He is my hero. l am enraged by the Gay Little Marxist Liberals who smear the Charlie Chan character as racist, Earl Derr Biggers deliberately created a heroic Chinese detective to fight the anti Chinese American prejudice that was common during the authors lifetime. Charlie often bravely confronts racist individuals in the novels.

When Warner Oland played CC, his #1 son Lee was played by Keye Luke. When Sidney Toler took over the character, his #2 son Jimmy was played by Victor Sen Yung and was scripted as a young and loyal but slightly screwball type. Slightly different take on a good theme.
