George Valley City Lights and Paris, Texas have the most touching endings in my opinion.

@paul w I actually haven't seen it since 1979, and I hadn't seen City Lights at that point so I didn't know about the connection. Just watched it and I see what you mean. Though for me, it doesn't pack the emotional wallop of City Lights or Cabiria.

That ambiguity is immense. Judith and Holofernes by Gentileschi is certainty, Dancer in the Dark by von Trier is certainty, but Kafka exists in doubt, Kazimir Malevich’s realm is doubtful. This film takes you all the way through love and leaves you empty on the other side because beyond your love of the other (person) there is the ambiguity that they may love you otherwise all of your faults, or they may not. And anyone who has loved feels that ambiguity. That ambiguity leaves this as maybe the best film people have created with only Vertov, Eisenstein (has anyone actually seen Bezhin Meadow?) and Welles (but for Ambersons, not Kane) knocking on that door. Chaplin’s lesson is simple, which is why he is one of the greatest of film artists, love with every fiber of your being, or don’t love at all. And that is how every character in every film he ever made exists.

Charlie said he didn't actually act in this scene, he said the moment was so powerful he felt like he was outside of himself looking in. A truly magical but so incredibly human scene. Love this movie so much could talk about it forever!

That's true. But don't forget the change in facial expression on Virginia Cherrill's face the moment she realizes the truth. Given the fact that re-shooting this scene over and over again must have been living hell for her, the result is for the ages. For me personally, it is only beaten by Max von Sydow's mood swing in "Pelle the Conqueror" when his son tells him that his love interest's husband who had been presumed lost at sea had just returned home and he realizes in a second that his one shot at some happiness in life has been shattered.

Charlie said when he made this ending, he wasn't acting... It came from another place, he felt like he was outside looking in. A truly magical ending, love this movie so much could talk about it forever!

hopefully she saw the beauty of this man through her natural eyes, as she saw his beauty with the eyes of the soul.... in a way, i believe, chaplin was afraid she (a angelic beautiful woman) would reject a little poor older guy... but it turned out that she did appreciate his internal, but also external beauty... beautiful ending.

It is already 90+ years ago. They were filming for more than 2 years and it was finally released in 1931.

The music. played during this scene is from the song La Violetera composed by the Spaniard José Padilla in 1914. Chaplin had a very good friendship with Spanish aristocrat and director Edgar Neville, and probably heard the song from him.

@@ceemartin5624 Yes, and if you watch the beginning of the movie, you'll see he mentioned it at the voice 'music', he was a genius, not a thief.

He really was a genius. Not only did he write, act and direct his movies, he wrote the musical scores for many of them, including the song "Smile".

Maybe some of the non-fans don't like him because of his private life. I wouldn't approve of some of the things he did but that's separate and apart from what he accomplished as the greatest artist in the history of cinema.

Chaplin never got an Oscar because he was a socialist... He was put under surveillance of the FBI during the McCarthy era and basically exiled (he wasn't allowed to re-enter the US in 1952 after spending a vacation in Europe; he was forced to move to Sweden with his family)
