I am so glad Charlie didn't replace Cherril in the Gold Rush for Hale. I really liked Hale in the Gold Rush but Cherril just seemed to be more natural as the blind girl. Hale seemed to be making fun of the Tramp in the ending scene rather than being a friendly and charitable person like Cherril. However, I disagree with people saying that the film was better because Charlie wasn't emotionally involved with his actress. Goddard's performance in Modern Times was fantastic and I think she was one of the few women that he really didn't want to let go of.

Thank God Virginia was kept... I just love her performance, not to demerit Georgia of course.

Wow, you can tell both women were directed by the same guy, who knew EXACTLY what facial expressions he wanted. It's hard to judge Hale from a single clip. She probably would have been good, but Cherril did a really lovely job. I think the gods of comedy overruled Charlie in this case. ;)

Hale was correct. she did what chalrie want. the key was the eyes of Hale at the end of the scene that expressed everything which charlie wanted to say. charlie was satisfied. I have had repeated the scene many times and it seemed to me that Hale expressed 5exactly what was in her inner side toward Charlie. city lights is full of a lot of details of a universal human experiences and that is exactly what I like about this giant Charlie Chaplin. everyone reads Charlie and understands him and that is one of the functions of art which Charlie knew how to express.

I wish I knew why he hated her. Ah well, life goes on.

Listening to Georgia Hale talk about Virginia Cherrill, and how "perfect" she was as her replacement in this film made me want to take a long, hot shower. It was disgusting. It was petty and disgusting.

Virginia comes off like a cold fish, to me. In her real-life interviews, as well. I much prefer Georgia Hale's performance of the tiny bit of retake she was involved in -- far more nuanced. The final scene with Virginia is convincing in the part where she acts superior to the poor little bum -- because I believe that accurately matches her personality, judging by her interview and the anecdotes about her. Anyway, a great movie, in spite of its rather abrupt ending.
