She isn't claiming that poverty and crime have a cause and affect relationship, she is pointing out that if you were to look at data, more often people struck with poverty are more likely to commit crimes than just your average Joe. Charlie is sorta white-knighting by calling her out for this however because anyone with a brain knows that correlation does not mean cause and affect, it means that there is a relationship between the two and that's it. Him acting as if she has just insulted the poor is a bit ridiculous considering he definitely agrees. Ultimately Charlie knows he is right and the girl agrees with him, he is just showing off for the crowd and messing with her even though I'm sure she was just wanting a mutual back-and-forth debate. This is why he caused her to slip up and accidentally insult Asian people. You can tell, by the look on her face that she knew that not all asain people are rich and that she made a mistake when she said it. Charlie knew they agreed from the beginning and decided to embarrass the girl because she decided the debate him on a topic that she already knew that she agreed with. It's actually what students are taught to do when righting persuasive papers or debates. They are taught to refer to any counter arguments that the opposite side could possibly bring up and to consider it and eventually disprove it. She is doing what she was taught to do in the required public speaking class that every college needs.

Crime unfortunately is the quickest easiest path for many to solve their issues of poverty (and addiction). I'm not saying it's ok, but desperate people do desperate things. And when being caught for those crimes has little legal consequence....or moral shame....it will occur more often. And related to morals, it's also not just a fatherless issue. Grew up in Detroit and learned a lot of bad habits there - like trash picking. That is where I got most of the things I had. When I got older and worked for everything I had I knew plenty of other white people that expected for me to supply them with things. Things like cigarettes and taxi rides in my car. I knew some that even would steal things for money and tell me they didn't consider it stealing, they considered it ' surviving ' I told them it was still stealing. White privilege goes back a long way. I knew other white people that thought I was ' privileged ' because I got out of bed every morning and went to a job. It's nothing new.
