What an important conversation. As someone who grew up in an abusive household, it really does make a mark on you. BUT, you have the choice to allow it to define you or to inform change in making something positive out of it so that chain doesn't continue. Drew and Charlize exemplify the power of change for good. Love this.

Vicki Liu It does leave a lasting mark on your whole life. For anyone who’s grown up in after a traumatic childhood and wonders what is wrong with them, why they aren’t happy, why they keep making mistakes, choosing the wrong partners, keep feeling like they are going backwards, it’s not your fault. We didn’t learn the right life skills. If you haven’t already, check out the videos by The Crappy Childhood Fairy. She really helped me to move past some issues and see that there is hope for a better future.

I think Drew has come full-circle. She’s an amazing woman, mother and actress who doesn’t make excuses for all the bullshit that might have come into her life, or maybe things she’s created for herself. Charlize is a beacon of hope for everyone...depth, and soul was on-point! She’s a pretty amazing lady. Both are, and Drew’s guests have been stellar. Congrats Drew!!!!!

I can so relate to the pain of growing up with a toxic, alcoholic parent. It's a real task to learn to love ourselves but also to love others because we were so let down.... I did walk on eggshells, every day, from my earliest years, living in fear. I remember being sure I would stop the chain of abuse and safeguard my children with love and acceptance. I am not a perfect mom but "a good enough mom" and my kiddos are definitely not afraid of me....they know I am there for them, Always- no matter what 💜

Thank you for the kind words.💜 With everything that has changed in our daily lives, I hadn't thought about what Charlize highlighted here. The ever- important safety net of safe houses and services for domestic violence and abuse being closed off...🤔 Thinking about how difficult the situation is for some women (and especially children). This pandemic and loss of income just exacerbates an already stressful situation. Surely there is an even greater need at this time for them.... Stay well and be safe 💜.

The other day I talked to a friend who grew up in a very toxic home, and now has a son. I told her I did not want kids, because I grew up with emotionally and verbally abusive parents, and I'm scared that I will somehow mess my kids up. She then told me something eye-opening: The fact that I am even aware of that--that I am self-aware of the effect my unresolved childhood trauma could have on my kids--shows that I am already in a better place than my parents were when they raised me. You seem to have that self-awareness too. I still don't know if I want kids, but hearing her say that helped to lessen some of my fears of having kids. And I hope it lessens some fears you may have as well.

I think if you had toxic parents (I had a tough time, my mum drank a lot and would get really mean and sometimes physical.then she got better but overindulged me to make up for when I was younger so I did whatever I wanted in my teens, no rules blah blah anyway it was complicated and our relationship is better than even but still complicated) anyway my point is that I watched this man called sadguru on KZfaq and he is so wise, he said this things about parenting that really resonated with me in terms of my upbringing and thinking about bringing a child into this world (I don’t have kids but want to one day) it was that you need to parent yourself before you parent children, and if you do it that way, you will be a good parent. ✨ that’s even more true for people who didn’t have a good upbringing in one way or any other, you have to parent yourself. I started being my own parent in my twenties and am now 33 and can see my parenting has done some good haha, so I’ll keep parenting myself and then I’ll be ready when I hopefully get to be a mother. Not sure if that helps ☺️

Hey Drew, I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your new talk show. Your conversation with CharIize Theron was so great to watch. Anywho, I could go through the "I loved you in.... " and "51st dates is one of my favourite movies"(it actually is) but it is you as a talk show host that that is my favourite. You have found that niche that that only a few excel at and made it your own. Stephen Colbert summed it up when he said your a natural fit and he is so right. I am looking forward to the next show and wish you continued success. Best wishes and stay safe. J.

I love these ladies. We do need to have communities of strong women around us. I would love that. I had some people at my last work place who I could turn to for help, strength and advice, but I lost my job due to COVID. It gets very lonely. And my husband is now working from home, so I have no escape from his moodiness. I have worried about domestic violence and child abuse increasing during this time. I hope those women and children find safety. Mine is “just” emotionally abusive. I think I have realized that I need to find a new job fast and get a plan in action to create a better life for myself. I’ve had this vision for years after watching “The Golden Girls” in my youth of a place where women could live together and support each other. Like a complex with separate living quarters so you could have privacy, but could share resources and laughs whenever possible. If I won the lottery, I would buy some land and build something. Oh, and have a small shelter there too to help animals in need. I seem to have cats show up on my properly regularly that don’t have a home. I’ve named the new one Rufus.

Who would down vote this interview, let alone Drew Barrymore? A bright positive interview, with two strong ladies, supporting each other. Keep up the solid interviews Drew! I hope your show is a big success.

As a 29 y.o male who also appreciates strength and empathy as important qualities in a person, I was totally all warmed up inside to just see these two awesome women exchanging gratitude for each other and I'm sort of a sobbing mess right now lol thanks anyway. We don't see this as often as we should.
