Hey mamas! Charlotte Mason was a big believer in notebooking. Many great minds have kept notebooks of their own. In this video I’ll show you how we have adapted this method to suit our family!

I’ll go first:
I’m Christina. I’m married to my best friend, Seth, we have 5 kids (ages 2, 4, 7, 11, & 14), and love our family, Jesus, and adventuring together.
We are passionate about being counter culture, including alternatives to traditional schooling. I have experience as a public school teacher, private school teacher, and homeschool mom!
I love the Charlotte Mason education approach, and many others, but I’d say we are more of an eclectic homeschool-mixing the different aspects of homeschool styles that we love-living books, literature-based learning, Montessori, nature study, and so much more!

Please give your 11yr old more freedom and credit with his ART he is soooo very talented! Also if cars are what he's into focusing in on that clearly would mean sooo much to him, he can do all kinds of things in engineering or whatever direction he wanted or could go, the options are endless for him!! So amazing!Every piece was WOW!! HE'S VERY TALENTED MOMMA!!!

Aww thanks! He is super talented! He has so many Canvases, and sketch books, and even painted an entire staircase leading to our basement so he had tons of freedom for his art, but I just don’t want this specific notebook to be treated like his other sketchbooks!

Great Job mama! I love that FINALLY I can see an authentic notebooking. I feel that lately I don’t see the realness of homeschooling. Sometime, our kids don’t apply themselves in some projects and it’s totally fine. Still worth showing. Your kids are so talented and inspiring. I love the simplicity where you just clearly see their learning. I love the fact that all subjects are together and it’s inspiring me to do the same with my kids.

I LOVE how you combine all subjects in one. This is the first time I've seen someone do that and now I think I can actually start. Before, I had visions of like 2 entries in each book by the time we finished and lots of blank pages. Worse yet, lessons that blend subjects....which book does it go in??!?!?!?!!! Terrible decision to have to make lol. My kids ate still really young, so this would always be an issue. You have given me permission to have just 1 notebook per child, a great representation for what to expect, and now I can't wait to get started 😊 ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this! We have started slowly getting into note booking, and I plan to have my son focus on this more during the next school year. Right now we use it to notebook our read aloud books. I have been using printouts from my many mega bundles 😂😂 and pasting in the finished product. Love it!

It's not ugly, it's REALISTIC. We all know the "examples" you keep seeing are done by adults with art degrees and perfect handwriting who probably STILL did several versions to get what they wanted or only included their best work. We have a BEAUTIFUL notebooking book like that...but it's very discouraging for the kids to look at and know that they will never be able to do anything close to it anyway. It also doesn't tell you as a parent what you can and should realistically expect from a child, or even a teen.

This is very helpful. We are adding notebooking next year. I was expecting more writing, good to know it doesn't have to be writing. I hate skipped pages too lol.

This was really helpful. We are doing Playful Pioneers this coming school year. I like how they glued their pages to the notebook. I'm thinking this will be great for doing Five in a Row too. Thanks for sharing😊

LOVE the idea of notebooking. In our state, we have the option of a portfolio vs testing for homeschool. This is so great for that purpose, but also a compact keepsake!

Wow I didn't know some states have this option. Notebooking would be such a great keepsake, and you can look back and see the progression. Definitely doing this in the upcoming school year.

I loved seeing this. Thank you. If you have a spiral (like for binding your own units) or know someone who does it might work for your last notebook. The holes look like the right size. Just a thought. That would drive me crazy.

I love this, we do notebooking in my house too, but I probably make it more complicated. We have things separated by subject so we have about 4 different notebooks that we keep ( math, read aloud, writing, science-nature) we also keep a few grapahic organizers that we combine ( with math, and one on vocabulary root words and spelling) it really cutsdown on loose pages and keeps everything together. I even go deeper so for writing one side is writing prompts/ free writing and the other is writing a summary from independent reading. Next year i am planning to give the thinking tree journal notebooks a try fir a few passion subject for my kids that they can independently work on ( oldest 2 aged 9 ans 12)

LOVE Your 7 year olds sower! This is wonderful. I need to make some inclusions notebooks for my toddler and preschooler. They would love that, since they insist on sitting in on everything. How many entries do you aim for in a week?

Yes, they love feeling included! I don’t have a set number, honestly. Some weeks we’re in them almost every day and some not so much. I actually don’t think we touched them last week, ironically.

With that thicker page sketchbook, you can do the dental floss trick so the pages don’t fall out. 😊

We alternate between different things for writing. We do have a language arts curriculum but it doesn’t get used as often,

Dan Koe says you're brand is you, people are here for you. This is more encouragement, i know it's not very helpful. Definitely focus on your family and what you are comfortable with and able to do. I would love to hear more of your faith walk and homeschooling and just navigating your own needs and your family's many needs.

Hi Christina, thank you for sharing. These are so sweet! I'm planning to implement notebooking with my 15yo to encourage his creativity (he actually needs more confidence in this area). I am planning to start soon with Journaling a Year in Nature from Simply Charlotte Mason and see where that takes us. I'm curious about the Burgess Bird Book...would you say it's more for the younger crowd?

Planning Notebooking for the first time with a 5 and 7 year-old. Curious how to decide when and what to notebook? Daily? Weekly? Do you make sure to cover each topic at some point? The idea of putting everything in 1 book is awesome and daunting to me at the same time!

I am a notebooker :) I only have my kids notebook about two notebook pages a week. We notebook history and science and nature notebooks (which I need to do better at this year). So, we do NOT notebook everything. Sometimes we just discuss. I also don't require drawing everything. My daughter gets too stressed out if she has to draw everything so sometimes we print pictures that we find on the Internet or take pictures with my phone and print with a sprocket. You can notebook anything. I give a lot of freedom on topics but with my special needs daughter, I assign the topic. Whatever comes to me. For instance, I had my daughter create clouds out of cotton balls. She copied the clouds from Nature Anatomy and that is in her science notebook. A year later she can identify the different kinds of clouds. I keep different subjects in different notebooks. I use three ring binders. If it's a smaller unit, I use those plastic pocket folders. I hope that helps. I also start with lapbooking and transition into notebooking. Hope that helps. Whatever you and your child does is right. It's a personal thing. I have kept my children's notebooks after they graduated. They are dear.

Quick question? For the organic studies from idlewild are the suggested read aloud books difficult to find at library or on you tube? I don’t want to have to spend a ton of money if I don’t have to. Thank you

First timer 👋👋 so please forgive me if some of my questions are answered in other videos. I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for doing this. My older daughter is going to be notebooking through science this school year (we start next month). I did wonder if some families used one notebook for multiple subjects and how that would look. I'm not sure I'll ever be confident enough to do this. But I plan to let my daughter decide how she'll convey what she's learning. Drawing, copy work, creative writing, word searches, Venn diagrams, ect. She chose her topic to be Paleontology because she loves dinosaurs 🦖🦕 Do you usually have your children do one page a day? Or how does that work? I plan for my daughter to do one page twice a week (she's 8). One to two pages seems like plenty for most ages, but having an all in one NB it seems difficult to study much that way. Do you operate on a loop schedule for all subjects? Can you expand on how you NB math? That seems so foreign to me I'm unable to wrap my brain around it. Do you have math textbooks? Do you use Life of Fred or some other less conventional math? Our math is traditional, so maybe that's why I'm struggling to understand. I want to utilize more notebooking it seems so freeing and definitely closer to our homeschooling style. We are eclectic homeschoolers though we lean toward literature based. We are lovers of books 📚 which is another reason I believe notebooking would be better for my family.

Hi! My kids have one notebook for any subject we notebook for, which usually doesn’t include math, because I do have a math curriculum for each of my 3 older kids. We don’t use the notebook everyday, so it just depends on exactly what we’re doing that day and if it is something we are going to notebook or not!

We do sort of Loop our subjects, in the sense that we don’t do every subject every day. We use the good and the beautiful for math.
