The Family Heirloom story- Um, if I had to make the choice between going into debt or selling my cheating ex-fiancé’s family engagement ring, I would DEFINITELY sell the ring. Does he really expect her to take the debt AND give the ring back, when it’s ALL his fault? The ring being sold is HIS fault. Those are the consequences of his actions. Idk why people are like “that’s so messed up” so is breaking a girl’s heart and then leaving her in debt WTF?? Actions have consequences. People are soft.

For the first story: if the ring meant that much to him and his family, he wouldn't have shrugged it off. She offered to give it back even though she didn't have to. Once it was given over, it's legally hers and she can do with it as she wants, heirloom or not. And, since he decided not to help with the costs, I don't blame her for selling it. Hell hath no fury, buddy.

I don't think that asshole's actions speak to if the ring was important to the rest of the family- he obviously doesn't give a fuck about other people's feelings. Also, unfortunately, it might NOT be "legally hers" BECAUSE it is a family heirloom. It depends where she's located, but sometimes those can't be seen as gifts like regular engagement rings. I hope she can't get sued, she doesn't deserve that shit in the slightest, but i do feel bad for the family. Both for losing the ring and having that asshole as a family member.

An engagement ring was meant to ensure that a man would stay faithful to his promise of marriage. Back in the day, men might get engaged to get sex, then break up and the woman's reputation was sullied (if they married it was not). If the breakup was his fault, she was entitled to sell the ring to support herself since marriage with anyone "decent" would be off the table. That poster damn well had every right to sell that ring. Hope he learned his lesson to not give heirlooms to someone he was not serious about.

I love this kind of learning for the little things I never knew why there would be kinds of rings involved for marriage
@Chaotic_Pixie
@Chaotic_Pixie Жыл бұрын
@@loveywilliams4276 It's the modern day dowry. Even as recently as the early 1800s in certain parts of the world, a young woman may have moved several villages away from her natal family to live with her bridegroom's family for several weeks to a few months before the wedding. The bridegroom's family would give the woman's family, money... animals... a portion of a successful harvest... and if the marriage failed to come to fruition, for whatever reason, she could return to her family and the family had means to support her. If the marriage was successful, her natal family had more means to care for younger siblings. Fast-forward to the Victorian era and later, where arranged marriages weren't the norm but the exception, the engagement ring gave a young woman security. She could move to a city and start over if he turned out to be a cad... which is also why certain rules began to arise about how much a ring should cost. Remember, most women still didn't work outside the home and when they did, the wages usually weren't good. By the 1980s, when a majority of adult women were also working paid jobs in the society, those notions tended to fall off, but you do still hear how an engagement ring should be anywhere from 3 paychecks to 3mo of a person's salary. And truthfully, the only reason I'd kind of ascribe to that notion these days is that it's proof they're capable of saving money... especially if you're not already living together. Personally, after doing the whole wedding thing... if I ever did again, I'd rather be proposed to with a down-payment (which for someone who earns 60-100K a year is about 3mo of salary anyway)

For the 1st one: any of the commenters saying she is horrible for selling a family heirloom, it’s the son’s fault. He obviously didn’t care enough about his own family’s feelings or about this heirloom if he said SEVERAL times he DIDNT care. So, no. She is not the AHole. She kept her promise and gave him AMPLE time and warnings only to be ignored and not just that but he KNEW the friend would tell her about how he didn’t care so he indirectly said it to her face. She is NOT the ahole, he is. And that family should be pissed at HIM not her for this. He’s the one that never went to get it back, he also cheated on the woman he gave that ‘precious’ heirloom to and he !!!!GAMBLED!!!! that heirloom. If anything, he should be made to buy it back for the family and never given the right to have it for any future marriage he may weasel himself into. Edit: love all your comments! Also I would like to add that legally she does not need to give the ring back because it is considered a gift. Wedding rings legally belong to those that you give them to. So true! People get really hung up over the fact that it is a family heirloom but just imagine being stuck with a 20k loan while the person who was supposed to help pay it off just happily tells you that it's no longer his problem... that's a lot of money! Plus she didn't sell it just to get back at him. He had several chances to get the ring back but he laughed it off and didn't take her seriously. So eventhough I feel bad for his family, imo these are reasonable consequences for his behaviour. You should expect some consequences when cheating on your fiancée and then being an AH on top of it by weaseling yourself out of helping to pay off the debt from the wedding. I would just be like, since you conveniently think that the loan is not your problem, consequently it also is not my problem how you get your family heirloom back 🤷🏻‍♀️😏

For that last story, if the bride wanted it to be a surprise wedding, she could have easily just said please don't wear any white, cream, off-white, etc. or just have a color theme like "hey, we are having a party and I think it would be fun if everyone wore blue" and message people she knows she wants to be in the bridal party to wear a different color than the other guests. Proper planning and there would have been no issue, just having people show up in whatever kind of opens the doors for others wearing white instead of the bride.

Note this is NOT body shaming what so ever. Every body type can look amazing in skin tight outfits. For the heirloom story originally wedding rings were meant for a way for the bride to have some money if something happened to the groom. When women couldn’t get everyday jobs or any jobs and had to be a housewife they couldn’t get money, if the groom/ husband died or cheated the woman would be able to sell the ring to get a decent amount of money to stay a float for a while, while looking for a new partner. So the bride used it for its original intended purpose.

Fun fact: under contract law in order for a contract to exist “consideration” needs to be given between the parties. It can be as low as £1 but needs to be worth at least that. Engagement rings are the original form of consideration and were genuinely supposed to be so if a man pulled out, and the woman was an old maid and her reputation hurt so she couldn’t find a new suitor, the ring would be to support her life afterwards. Yes, I was thinking the ring was given as a collateral towards a wedding/marriage... she only set up the wedding because he said he wished to marry her, so he was partly responsible for the expenses. So either it was honoring his part in the cancelled wedding, which under the circumstances would be 100% IMO, or she had the right to put the ring towards that. If his family wanted it back, they should have taken the responsibility for the expenses on behalf of their wayward son. But ultimately, it was his to give to his fiancée OP, to be hers, so they can take it up with him. He was the one to squander his family's heirloom on a failed engagement, because he could not be faithful. I'll caveat in the case that he had disagreed to wedding expenses/expenses was not agreed on before he was caught cheating, and/or cheated because she went "bridezilla" on him, in which case she would be the ah. But it does not sound like that.

My best friend was with this nightmare of a man for 7 years, they got engaged and bought a house together. The wedding planning commences and she's doing most the work, as usual. Months pass and she walks in on her fiances doing the devil's tango with the girl he told her not to worry about. They break up and he refuses to deal with the house, she contacts him over and over nothing. She is left to deal with the house entirely on her own. Since he involved himself in exactly zero way she got to take all the money they made on the house after selling it. The house went up 80k in market value and she got to keep all that money to herself!

My parents did a surprised wedding too. At first, they pretended it was a big party to celebrate their 25th years of love, and only me, my lil brother and the celebrant (a family friend) knew that it would then transform into a wedding celebration. The thing is, my mother didn't want a big white dress since, you know, she didn't felt like a young virgin anymore after getting two sons that were now grown adults (we were both chosen to sign the papers at witnesses, it was pretty cool tbh). So she decided to celebrate in a cream casual dress, that was way more fitting to her style and taste anyway. The thing is, my aunt (mom oldest sister) came to the party in an incredibly detailed edwardian white dress... So yeah, it could have been awkward, but fortunately, nobody cared. First because that aunt had always been obsessed with edwardian clothes so it wasn't the first time she showed up dressed like that, and will not the last time too (I know since I've lived with her an entire year 'cause she lived closer to my university, and yes, her entire lifestyle and wardrobe is edwardian, it is not just for show when she's going outside). Second because everyone was just so happy and emotional over my parents finally getting married after so much time. So yeah, nobody could have stolen the show since everyone was so overjoyed by the surprise. And third, nobody knew it would have been a wedding, so why get mad? Moral of the story, if you're focused on having a good time, your wedding will be incredible, and that's it. Seeing my parents so happy inspired me a lot for my own wedding, so my husband and I got a really simple ceremony that we ended up enjoying a lot exactly because the simplicity and the low cost made all the stress go away. 10/10 would recommand to anyone.

The wedding ring is an investment- AND a safety net for the bride in case the marriage is in bad faith. For situations JUST LIKE THIS. Plus if you don't want to risk losing a family heirloom don't give it to someone else, especially if your doing things that could cause the person you gave the heirloom too to no longer consider you family. Exs family shouldn't be mad at OP they should be mad at their son who played dumb games with something so important to them.

Actually, an engagement ring is considered a conditional gift. If you don't get married you are required to return the ring. Dude can actually sue her. Return the ring and take him to court over the loan. Edit: AFTER you are married he is not entitled to get it back if you break up.
@Terrenea

Dunno if that's accurate when it comes to engagment ring...? Don't know how the customs or rules has changed. 😅 According to old (read ancient) customs the engagement ring was actually a safety net for the fiancée/bride like the previous person mentioned. From the beginning it was in case the fiancé or husband died or annulled the wedding, since the woman could loose the desirability for other men, even more so if they got married and had children since then they'd no longer be virgins.🙄 And since lots of women didn't earn much if anything, they could sell the engagement ring as a last resort. But as said, dunno the rules now. 😅😅 And in this case I think the OP could've checked with the exs family since he probably didn't even bring it up to them and just the friends. So understand that the family feels slighted, but ex should also be blamed by them.😕

There are 5 states that have laws that depend on who broke off the engagement. Since she called off the wedding, she is not entitled to keep the ring in any of those states. In the other 44 states, if the wedding does not take place, ownership of the ring reverts back to the giver.

@@memawknowsbest4978 I doubt the Courts would find that he unilaterally forfeited the ring and she had a right to dispose of it. With that said, the failed attempt to return the ring could-under the right circumstances-be considered abandonment of the property, under which she’d have the right to sell it. But in such cases, there are many, many hoops to jump through depending on the state to determine abandonment, including written correspondence, sending certified mail, etc. If she undertook those steps, she may be off the hook. If she didn’t, and sold the ring anyway, she might be being fitted for an orange jumpsuit.

I worked with a man a few years ago and my husband and I received an invitation to a Memorial Day cookout at his house and told to come wearing extremely casual clothes. Everyone showed up in jeans or shorts or sundresses. We had a lovely catered BBQ and after everyone had pretty much finished eating, the man asked everyone to gather in the backyard for a few minutes. Once we were all in place he got up and called a man forward and said that this man was Reverend So and So and he was there to perform his wedding ceremony. NO ONE, to my knowledge, had a clue we were going to a wedding, and he later said that he deliberately did not mention what it was because he felt that if he had told us that it was a wedding, but he wanted everyone to dress casually and he didn't want anyone to bring a present, some people would have gone against his wishes and dressed up and/or brought a present anyway. He's probably right. I thought, hands down, that was the best, most low stressed wedding I had ever attended.

She didn't find out until some time later after they divorced. She didn't ever really get into the trunk so that's why she didn't notice sooner. It was suppose to be a safe place for them to be kept. Since high school we always find a way to dress alike even without trying. For prom she had her dress custom made and spent a lot of time designing the dress and finding a seamstress she could afford that could do the work. I bought the first dress I tried on because I didn't want to go, I knew my mother would approve of the dress, and I knew my mother would disapprove of anything I wanted to wear. Long story short we wore the same dress. Thank GOD it was different colors and material and we are very different sizes so a first glance you wouldn't tell. But if we stood next to each other long enough you would see it's the same dress. It never bothered us though we still laugh about it. However, some people thought I did it on purpose and knowing she worked really hard to get the money to buy her dress when mine was only 80 dollars, think that I am some kind of stalker ahole.

It's considered property of the family of the fiance and fiancé who is lending it to be passed down to a future offspring. If he sues her she will have to pay it back and his lawyer costs. But his wife’s family convinced her that my hair would overshadow/outshine her in her white dress.🙄 so they tried to gang up on me to get me to DYE it to whatever color they chose that they considered ‘natural’ and a ‘background color’.🙄😂 (that’s after I payed for almost the entire bridal shower, and personally did the most physical work for their wedding prep, and kept everything realistic (a lot of crazy people) so that it would all work out.) it was so stupid, and out of spite I kept my hair platinum and hold the reputation of many of the guests for looking drop dead gorgeous😂😂😂 and I regret nothing.

If I ever get married, I'd want 25-30 people because I'm really introverted. Plus, weddings are expensive. A few years ago, I got invited to a relatives wedding but declined the invitation due to the wedding having 600 guests not including the bridal party and it was out of state too.

Yeah so.. I was very recently uninvited from an old friend's wedding citing health concerns. I was invited instead to an interactive livestream of the wedding. Turns out that I was the only one in the chatroom of the interactive livestream besides a few of her older relatives, which makes me think it wasn't just health concerns. And to add insult to injury, the livestream was clearly an afterthought at best. It started and ended promptly at the start and end of the ceremony, and it was filled sideways. Not just sideways, but sideways in portrait mode! So a horrible viewing experience and I didn't even get to be a part of the reception at all. Even though it was virtual, I literally got dressed up like I was going IRL and I even bought Champaign so I could toast with everyone. It was a huge letdown. I also haven't heard from said "friend" since even though I reached out to her by text after the wedding to wish her well and everything. Obviously, she just decided that she didn't want to be friends anymore and didn't have the "heart" (guts) to tell me directly. Oh well, good riddance.

Don't get me wrong, I'm ride or die with my friends and always there when needed or requested, but you gotta make the first move. My parents had 400 people at their wedding… they most certainly would not have been able to plan a wedding during a pandemic lol. Glad the bride stuck up for herself and didn’t invite her”friend” to the wedding. It’s very obvious that that first bride wanted her cake and eat it too! The fact that she would even ask where her invitation was to OP’s wedding either shows that she is very entitled, or just expected not to get caught in the act of using the bride. Know your worth! Don’t let somebody get away with using you.

For the first story, if the guy really was serious about the ring, he would've agreed immediately to help pay the expenses. But nope, he was too prideful and tempted fate with the "you wouldn't do it" that's literally asking for trouble and that's what he got. He rather not help pay so the consequences of his actions led to a family heirloom being sold. The question is why didn't his family advice him to help pay the debt so that the ring can be returned? it's like a ransom, they do this, they get the ring back, but didn't so it's goodbye great grandma's ring. If the family really wants the ring, the guy might as well buy the ring for the family ;P

Whilst I may agree with you about what she chose to do, unfortunately the law doesn't. An engagement ring is given in expectation of the marriage happening. When they didn't get married BY LAW she must return the ring. If not he can sue her and will ALWAYS win. There are numerous examples of this type of thing on Judge Judy for example, so many so I'd have thought that everybody would know this law by now. She should have attempted to sue him for her out of pocket expenses and let a judge decide, but ultimately if he gets advised properly she will lose out to the value of the ring, plus additional value added for both the family heirloom sentimental attachment and probably his legal fees and lawyer costs. AITA - No, but you're as dumb as paint, if he sues and wins it'll be double or more she loses

If you're going to throw a surprise, you have to anticipate 1) being fully and completely prepared for anything, and 2) anything the victim of your surprise might do when they are under a different impression about what's happening

1st story: In many (but not all) places the family heirloom is returnable. I would have suggested approaching the ex-fiance's parents about their AH son and the ring to bargain for compensation for costs. Mummy & Daddy can take it out of AH's hide afterwards and maybe save the heirloom for a sibling instead.

@@jlt131 It depends on the country. In many countries there is a rule/law stating that gifts must be returned, or at least the monetary value, if requested by the other person. Of course, there usually has to be a reason, but depending on the country, you can ask for expensive gifts back. If the person refuses, you can go to court and they will return the item. In this case cheating does not change it because there is no connection to the ring. She could go to court and ask for an apportionment of costs & depending on the country, the court will divide the costs. But now he can go to court if he wants to because she sold his family ring.
@hippopajamas

@@jlt131 This also depends on location- but heirlooms are a totally different bag of worms. Technically, I think his *family* could even sue for it because it is seen more as a loan from the family than a gift. Totally depends where they live, of course, but unfortunately this situation isn't as simple.

As someone who has been a bride, weddings can be extremely stressful, expensive, and mentally and physically draining. So, I can see now why some brides can crack under the pressure. My wedding was small (like thirty people) and I later learned that some drama had gone down between the bridesmaids, but my best friend and MOH did her best to keep it all away from myself and my husband. It's not like I would have blown up at anyone, but my BF and MOH knew that I had been waiting for a year and a half for this day (hubby and I were separated 2020 - mid 2021 because of COVID restrictions. He's English, I'm Australian) so a lot was riding on it.

Sharing my messy coworker story: Not as a teacher but during my time at Extended Day (after school program), an old friend from middle school started working at the program. We were initially extremely excited and caught back up since we used to be like best friends, but I soon found she grew to be very immature and petty. I wasn’t too psyched working beside her since she treated the kids like friends but I did like getting the opportunity to talk with someone I was fond of…until she started getting messy. She told me she was best friends with my husband’s ex wife which was shocking (what are the odds of that?) Not only that but 1. She knew the ex had been cheating for months and let it go on at her place 2. she literally wanted to make us all friends again…not kidding…long story short, his ex was the girl who consoled me when my husband and I originally broke up in high school, then started dating him literally a week later. I didn’t even learn this from her, another friend told me to check her Facebook…classy. My husband didn’t even know we had been friends and that she played both of us like a fiddle back then until I showed him the message log years later+ her cheating so he definitely didn’t want to be friends with her either! We are homebodies who just like to relax without drama but her presence in my work-life became an every day stressor. The old friend started trash talking my husband’s mother. She is the sweetest lady in the world, non-meddling, and very passive so it was a little weird that she even had those sorts of complaints. I told my husband who of course didn’t like that and sent her a message to please stop talking about his mom. She blew up on him with paragraphs of nonsense and he just left it on read. After that, she started telling the CHILDREN at school-yes, the CHILDREN-that I was dating “her best friend’s ex-husband.” I was just like… 😰!! My boss at the time was really lax and he didn’t feel it was as big enough issue as I did so I went above him to the program lesions who said they would move her to another program. Problem solved, right? Nope. My boss mistakenly overbooked our program by like 20 or so kids and we needed another worker to stay in ratio so to my surprise, I come back the next year and she was still present at the program. I tried to make it work but it didn’t take long until she started with her antics again so I got fed up and left to a different school myself. This whole situation soured my relationship with my boss since I was shocked he didn’t care and he was shocked by how I was handling the situation. He felt I should have just dealt with it since you won’t always get along with who you work with…which is true, but this dilemma went far beyond that in my opinion. She was sharing my personal life with children. That was just so unprofessional and weird! It made for an unnecessarily uncomfortable environment and I felt embarrassed being near kids and parents I had previously worked with for two years…I had worked with them since 3rd grade and missed their 5th grade goodbye walk around school leaving…it was heartbreaking. If not for that situation, I probably would have worked at that school as a teacher since it’s one of the most prestigious schools in my city with awesome parent support, having worked at the after school program there, and my parents were friends with the principal’s family. I did end up at a great drama-free school close to my house though. I was blessed with the exact school and grade I was interested in and got to adopt/inherit the resources and skills of a wonderful 40 year teacher. I hope to never see that girl again and I PRAY she does not become a teacher… 😥

The second story about the number of people invited to a wedding: If they want you there then you WILL get invited. My friend got married at the height of covid. Beach wedding. 30 people total, including the catering, photographer, essential family like parents, and guests. She wanted me there. I mean REALLY wanted me there. So much, so that she bumped a cousin whose kid is literally named after her JUST so I could have a +1, and then arranged for that +1 to be someone whose sole purpose in getting invited was to drive me to the venue. I don't drive, so this sole act right there is the yardstick by which I measure every person who makes excuses for why they can't get something done.
