He played Bakke as a defensive midfielder. Completely clueless manager - tactically inept. Should have played Batty and Dacourt in central midfield. Don’t get me started on Okon, Barmby and Lucic!

The sheer amount of off field drama and financial issues zapped the players mentally once the big names begun to be sold, it unsettled training sessions as the squad didn't know who was coming or going, the most Ried could do was the odd good performance, he couldn't even turn the situation around, looking back he should have just sold the whole team and played fresh youth players, they may have stayed up the year after??

Nice to see a game from the recent(ish) era that didn't include gold medal winning dives and crowding around the ref every time an opponent was within 10 foot.

This side later ended Arsenal's title challenge and avoided relegation, only to go down the next season. Very sad to see such fine players undermined by mismanagement. Future's bright now though under Bielsa and Radrizzani.

@John Harrison Sad indeed. As a Liverpool fan, it's incredible how long Leeds have been out the top flight, with the great teams they've had over time, and the players they had here and still be relegated, it's baffling. I'm 27 now, and as a kid I'll be honest, I hated Leeds because they where tough to beat, and coming to Anfield they where always a danger. Good to see them back finally, and hopefully the rivalry can grow back to something like it was, which I'm confident it won't be long before it does.

@@steventhompson2511 Going back further I have some great memories, Steven. Shanks and Revie were close friends, which added spice. Leeds first won the League at Liverpool in 69 in front of the Kop who gave them a fantastic reception. Later I remember watching a game at Leeds when Chris Lawler, the Liverpool full back, scored two headed goals. That was the first time I saw what the Dutch later called total football. It started with Liverpool. Roll on Klopp and Bielsa!

Leeds were already a sinking ship by the time Reid arrived, there was very little he could to turn the situation around, Kewell had already made up his mind he was going to leave, Smith and Matteo were the only ones who really played as time went by, Radabe was past his best and injury prone and the rest lost their mental hunger and enthusiasm by then,
