Darryl is actually my favorite Charmed character. When I watched the show for the first time as a kid I thought he will end up becoming a whitelighter because he is so kind and caring and always helps sisters. I was convinced the show will at some point reveal that Darryl is a future angel and the reason he is so attached to sisters is because it's his destiny to become magical too. I was so shocked when that didn't happen. I think Darryl deserved to become whitelighter more than Brody did

We were denied the opportunity to see what a buddy cop show with Dorian Gregory and Julian McMahon would have been like.

I actually had the fortunate opportunity to meet most of the cast at 90scon recently. I shook Dorians hand gave him a huge hug, and let him know he was just as an important part of our childhoods as the rest of them.

I'm just happy he and his family made it out alive

Ironic that Darryl was no longer in season 8 and here comes Henry, Paige’s boyfriend who turned to be her husband was the new cop. But Darryl’s character was so good knowing that there was a human / mortal who knew about their secret.

It always bugged me how Sheila seemed to do a complete 180 on how she felt about the sisters and him helping her. I understand that it put him in danger a lot of times, and that was likely how she got to that point. But as you said, they never SHOW it happen, so it just seems jarring when she changes her viewpoint

I always appreciated the Prue and Darryl relationship after Andy’s gone. Something I missed after Prue was gone. And season seven was a good season for Darryl. I liked his ending even though I would’ve liked to see him come back or mentioned in the series finale. Thanks for doing this video!

The way they downgraded him to Morris after he refused to help them tells you everything about Darryl’s place in their life. I mean they even took his soul without his permission, selfish brats lol

I never took too much notice of not seeing behind closed doors in Darryl's life but now you mention it, I did much prefer it once Sheila came along. It gave his character some much needed fleshing out. And yes, I'd like to have seen more of it over the course of the series. Darryl was always a favourite of mine and I hated what the sisters did to him in S6. One of the many reasons that season was one of my least favourites. But to see his character come full circle in S7 was rewarding.

I loved Darryl. One of my favourite scenes is him asking Piper if she froze a crime scene and that she should not do that! Also, when finding out they are witches, he just does not want to know the intricasies, he only wants to know what is needed - a character development as he was sceptical each time Andy mentioned magic and witches in the first episode. I hated what they did to his character after the whole Barbarus trial and Inspector Sheridan. It also fascinated me that he told his wife about the sisters and she just accepted the fact that magic is real. It was nice seeing him again in the comics with powers and all, but I missed the real Darryl from season 6 onwards.

I'd love to see a video on Phoebe's empathy and how unnecessary it was.

The main Darryl problem is there is not enough Darryl

Now I have a neat little spin off in my head where Darryl figures out the local magic situation in his new East Coast town but he's wise and keeps his insight a secret and it takes the witches he's helping a whole season to realize it's not coincidence, he knows something and then season two starting with stress of is this actually a bad thing and definitely one of Darryl and Sheila's kids gets involved in magic....

"Write good characters." Yes.

Can we also talk about the Inspector Sheridan problem? Imagine if they'd given us an episode exploring who she is, why she does what she does, maybe even have her as an innocent the girls need to protect, even if they didn't want to. We may have actually felt something for the character, but as written she's a cardboard cutout

I would have loved to have seen the slow decline of what Sheila started feeling about the sisters. Or the aftermath of him almost dying and how the whole family had to deal with a dark cloud over them. I also would’ve been happy with at least a picture at the end of Daryl and his family with them. they got this whole he’s family narrative but never actually treat him like family.

I think Darryl suffers from the change in direction of the show. Early on, it was much more grounded in terms of storytelling and largely keeping keeping the supernatural world speculative. As they leaned more into this, it felt more and more that he wasn’t required week in week out. I think if they had given him just a touch more of an arc early on then it would have been harder for them to leave him behind. It’s a real shame because Dorian Gregory is a brilliant actor and deserved a more meat like we got later on. (And the lower decks idea is a fantastic concept and I am now angry they didn’t do it - so thanks for that haha!)

Honestly, maybe the amount of screen time he got was perfect. Though I would have loved to see more of him, he was so good in the supporting role. I think that when he said something or we saw him on screen, it was special.

What's most appalling is how casually dismissive the Sisters themselves are of Darryl. There's a quiet, implicit consensus that he's solely there just to help them. There's no gratitude. His outside life, that's another excellent point regarding the writing, but on daily rewatching, it's awful seeing how they just sort of use him, talk shortly to him, or talk down to him without appreciating his presence. I'm not saying Darryl should be praised -- not at all, but given his identity as the sole Black character playing a crucial role in their lives, it doesn't looking very charming.

You give me a new retroactive appreciation. I got so unbelievably bothered by attitudes by the end of the series. BUT you point out some good complexities and remind me how hard even these depictions of characters were and how we don’t get them today much outside premium cable/streaming (not network primetime thats back to young and PG melodrama in neon filters).

Daryl was a character with so much potential but bny the time S7 came, it was clear the sisters and the show treated him like a doormat.

Honestly, I really liked episode with him because they feel like cop dramas... but with magic!

I remember being so upset when he didn’t return for season 8 but his ending was in-tune with his character outside of the sisters. Darrell had every right to say no to the sisters about using his soul and other times. I wish there was an episode where the sisters took accountability for their actions and how it’s hurts other namely Darrell. As much as I love Charmed and series like it they definitely forget to hold the “heroes” accountable most times. Darrell is one my favorite characters in the show. I wish that we could have seen a lot more of that inner conflict and family conflict. Great video!!!

So in the midsts of the George Floyd protests in 2020, I randomly remembered there was an entire episode dedicated to the premise of a cop getting sentenced to execution for killing an unarmed civilian and spent the next several months trying to unpack that in tandem with the fact that the condemned cop was also the only regular black character. I still havent quite managed it haha

Another great charmed video, it was really good in highlighting the high and low points for the character. Darryl never did feel like he was there for representation purposes purely which is great in retrospect. The attempt of a diverse charmed reboot really enraged me because to make the characters Afro Latina and not cast afro latinas was just a joke especially with how little speaking roles Latin people especially Afro Latin people have in film and television

Darryl was very unerrared and underappreciated, but he was the glue that held the sisters together. However, his chemistry with Andy was really good and very brotherly. Any chance of an Andy review?

Darryl almost died by the very supernatual world he tried to protect. That council was about to off him due to the sisters negligence.

2nd hand plot show don't tell. Perfectly sums up the Darryl problem. Too much of his arc happens off screen. We didn't get to see why he and Sheila changed their minds about the sisters. It makes them seem all over the place.

First of all, I love this video, I love this character, and I’m so glad you did Justice towards Darryl Morris! It’s what he deserves! Second of all, at some point in the future, I would love to see video analyses of Piper, Phoebe, and Paige. You’ve done such an excellent job of examining the complexities of each character you’ve covered and I would love to see that for these characters whom I love and feel are overly criticized at times yet feel frustrated with their characterizations at certain points(Seasons 5 & 6 in particular)

Definitely plot device character category. Tokenism is a Hollywood stable when it comes to various minorities. Used as decorative and supporting roles to make the main character(s) shine or to display the main character(s) morality. Appreciate it not being glossed over here.

It would have been nice to see a Daryl-centric episode that just focused on him and how he's dealing with covering up the "Unexplained cases".

One of the reasons I think why African American characters specifically seem "too perfect" occasionally, I think is done on purpose so the audience (whether racist, or not) can't having negative to say, or at least that's what they're aiming for. While this is Charmed and not an analysis on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, in that film there were other reasons to question the relationship, such as how quick and sudden it is, where as their focus and shock was his race. The same can even apply to his parents meeting his white girlfriend. They're both adults and highly successful. Most parents number one dream back in the day was their daughter to marry a lawyer, or a doctor, and that is exactly what her parents got, but yet they were taken back by the announcement at first. I bring this up, because I always felt like Daryl was something similar, only as you stated was merely a "token" in this story, not a main character, and done simply to have more inclusion in the cast of characters and to use at their disposal. To be honest, I'm surprised they even introduced the concept of his wife, considering it seemed as if they only bring him on the show to use him only in reference to the sisters and nothing more, especially since Andy was out of the picture. If it weren't for Andy's inclusion in the beginning Daryl would have less scenes, or perhaps none at all and wouldn't have existed like he originally was. I kind of wonder what really inspired them to create this character (since he wasn't in the pilot) and if they intended him to really be this way, or it just unintentionally went in that direction. If Andy stuck around longer I wonder how the direction of Daryl would have went. I feel Daryl would have been kicked out of the last season regardless, since even Leo was not in a lot of the last season due to budget cuts. Another great video!

I loved this character. Personally, this was probably due to the fact that I could not keep my eyes off the actor when’re he appeared. Like. Every. Time. What a hunk - and those episodes where he wore tight sleeveless muscles shirts, *swoon*. Having got this off my chest, I enjoyed Darryl’s character development-what little there was- over the series. Their "friendship" happened only when the sisters needed something from him. Apart from that they never spent free time together, or just communicated like normal friends.

Right about the time he almost died for them, is when I lost respect for the sisters. Their entitlement behavior and ignoring his fears really pissed me off. Especially Paige. When she stole his soul after he said "NO" when they wanted to get into Valhalla and then when she got an attitude because he wasn't waiting by the phone at the station when she called and she couldn't find him because of the woman who she was helping got beat up by her ex..I was done. Phoebe telling him to get over the ordeal that happened to him after she confronts him outside at her friend's wedding, when he served her a warrant for Chris's arrest. Piper hanging up on him when he called needing answers of what was going on... Darryl wasn't being selfish. It's bad enough that his wife has to worry as a cop's wife, but then double that with worrying about the supernatural world killing him too. The audacity of the sisters getting mad at him for putting the needs to his family first, when they were willing to go above and beyond to protect each other...and especially when Chris was in danger. The man had to uproot his family to the East Coast just to get away from their demanding reach. After the Cleaners trial they should have decided to back off from using him anymore because of how much more dangerous things were getting and they wanted his wife and kids also out of harm's way and to make sure they didn't bring on Darryl's death and have to look his wife and kids in the eyes ever again...

I regret to say I don't think I've seen Dorian Gregory in anything else, just Charmed. He really is an awesome actor, the variety that he brings to the role really kept Darryl fresh for the audience for all those years and all the rewatches. Fair dues.

You know I appreciate you examining the show as a fan and when I mentioned in another comment that I was skeptical about clicking on your videos is because I am obviously a super fan of the series and I get mad when someone trashes it. There's another channel on KZfaq which seems to have the opposite objective of yours, it exists solely to make fun of "charmed" the writing the characters etc. So when I watched a video of that channel I got angry and started attacking the creator. For me as a little Black boy who looooved Charmed, Darryl was SO important to see on screen. I very much loved his relationship/friendship with Prue after Andy died and the writers missed the opportunity to really get into their dynamic, but to be honest it seemed like the other sisters couldn't care less about him and how much he put his job at risk to help them and I never liked that! They really should've given him better character development and focused more on keeping the continuity of the show instead of throwing random new characters at us!

And I remember when he appeared with his wife Sheila when I saw this part as a kid and I was thinking who is she where did she come from so there wasn’t enough exclamation to these two couples backstory so something tells me Sheila character was not told because they were to focus on the main characters in the TV series so there was a issue with the script I think the writers and the producers and directors were lazy not to give Darryl and Sheila a story line and how did they met these couples But anyway the importance was the storyline and the main characters but it turns out the black cop 👮🏾‍♂️ Darryl He was just a psychic I need to help out this is it this is how they saw him so this is how I feel he was just like those superhero psychics only there to help out this is it we call you when you need help so this is what I feel like what they were doing the charmed ones but anyway he deserved better Dorian Gregory

You know, that would actually be a great reboot idea, to have 3 series running simultaneously, in the same world: a magic school teen drama, charmed, and a demon/human buddy cop series in a supernatural world (darryl with cole)... And the mains from one having constant side kick appearances every once in a while

Back when a season lasted 22 episodes instead of the 8 to 10 we get now.

I love that the last scene season 7 finale, usually the door of the charmed manor, ends with Daryl.

Darryl was such a weird character to me. I didn’t mind him at all when he was on screen, in fact I did like him a lot, but I never questioned him or what his life was. I was actually very surprised when Sheila came along because I felt it was out of the blue. We didn’t get a first meeting, she just popped up like she had always been there. As for Darryl, I didn’t question when he was in the episode or when he wasn’t, I actually didn’t even notice that he wasn’t in season eight the first time I watched it, I really don’t know how I could not take notice. I guess Charmed has always been pure entertainment to me so I never questioned anything they gave me.

Ok, fine, I'll go watch it again!

Kinda wish Daryl was single and he and Prue developed into something. That could have been an interesting relationship

I disagree that the female characters were particularly well written. In the beginning they might have been (and had potential) but once Shannen Doherty left the show took a nosedive. But yeah, poor Darryl spent the whole series as a non-entity.

Yeaaaah..... the whole black cop thing and the tokenism thing sucked. But I did like a lot of what they did with Darryl's character. And the ending for him was a good one. Even if, like you said, it would have been nice if he'd had more of his own storylines that we got to see.

Way more charitable than I see it. Darryl was basically a walking plot device that they occasionally remembered was human. The term for Darryl, coined by Spike Lee, is “The Magical N*gro”. He fits the trope almost perfectly. Beyond that, his motivations, and of those around him, are so flimsy. His dad changes his mind about atrocities faced by the Black community because he got to play dress up once? And that experience was so powerful that he wanted his son to be an actual cop? Please show take an episode and explain please. *sigh*

I loved Darryl! But he did often feel plucked out of a different show with how they handled his character. I thought he played off the sisters and their men very well. It’s a shame they didn’t write him more coherently.

Charmed is one of those shows for me where I really enjoy the first season and the potential, but by season 5 I'm completely checked out. I think that's the best way I can describe everything with charmed. Great potential. Every character. Every plot. It's brimming with ideas and promise but always seems to miss the mark
