This was also used in the medley of 3 anthems performed by the ÖRF Vienna philharmonic orchestra. Along with it are the Overture from The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ode to Joy from Movement 4 of Symphony No. 9 by Ludwig van Beethoven which is the European Union anthem. It was performed during the Opening of the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest last 2015 in Vienna, Austria.

Say what you will about European culture - it encompasses everything from the Eurovision Song Contest at the bottom to this masterpiece at the absolute peak, so there is a lot to say - but when it's good, it's close to perfection.

More than 40 years have passed and I am still excited to hear it and remember old times

Yes, old times, recording the EVN feed. Do you remember the funny little sequence of tones that Eurovision Control used to use to ident their audio output? It took me ages to figure out that it was the notes of the 'Te Deum' being produced (badly) by one of those programmable doorbell chips that represented the searing white heat of technology in the 1970s. I was at the BBC, and I loved this music so much that I stuck it on the front of my wedding video! (I used to record the Eurovision sting at the front of the Song Contest every year, so I had a wide range of versions to choose from.)

I grew up with incredibly musical parents. My mother a pianist, my father a classical music devotee, there was rarely a moment in which a brilliant musical masterpiece would not play in the background of our cosy little kitchen. I remember many a day when I would go downstairs very early in the morning while my mother was still asleep, a child of two or three, and my father would put Te Deum on the CD player - then he'd dance me around the kitchen in his old red dressing gown. It was brilliant. What a wonderful memory - one I have so often thought about but so often forgotten to nurture over the years. I have not heard this song in a very long time, but I shall never forget it...and nor shall I forget the moments it brings.

Hi Lydia. Greetings from an expatriate Brit now living in New Zealand. Your childhood story is quite charming. Te Deum is a magnificent example of Baroque music that I'd not heard before this moment. I would have to say, it's most certainly anthemic and would be an excellent replacement for my adopted country's embarrassingly obsequious offering "God Defend New Zealand".

@@user-nr3sd4dg3y Yeah, so what? In Germany culture in the south is different to the north, too, but we still are all Germans. Being European doesn't mean for me that we all have to be the same. We have different cultures and that's totally ok with me. Each country brings in it's own great achievments (no matter how far in the past they are) to make Europe this colourful continent it is. I for myself don't think much of feeling like a European or whatever but simply because I don't think of it not because I don't feel like one. I can't force you to feel like a European, but perhaps you should consider that it's not like the rest of Europe has one culture that is different to Greece but that every single country has a culture that is different to (almost) all the rest of them.

@@user-nr3sd4dg3y Look, friend. I'm Greek too, but self-identify as European. The fact that most Greeks (including me) aren't fond of the EU doesn't mean that we aren't racially and culturally European. Remember, the word 'Europe' has Greek roots. However, I would like to point out that I don't espouse chauvinistic views about being European. I'm European but that doesn't make me superior to anyone else. And we Europeans need to acknowledge the fact that we are responsible for genociding tens of millions of people in other continents- currently Native Americans and Australian Aboriginals don't seem to ever reclaim their rightful lands from Europeans and Mestizos.

Like many other little kids here in Italy, I was scared of the Eurovision intro because of the very aggressive static graphic in the 70s . In fact , children under a certain age , are not able to decypher objects not belonging to reality like the old Eurovision logo because of its being " unanimated" , therefore seeing that as a threat . If those graphics went with some solemn , beautiful but too powerful musics like the one of Marc Antoine Charpentier , well , an explosive mix was served . That worked also with loomy or unsettling tracks , for example like the one used by Rai for its closedown sequence , aired from 1954 to 1986

Te gloriosus Apostolorum chorus, Te Prophetarum laudabilis numerus, Te Martyrum candidatus laudat exercitus. Te per orbem terrarum sancta confitetur Ecclesia, Patrem immensae maiestatis: Venerandum tuum verum et unicum Filium; Sanctum quoque Paraclitum Spiritum. Tu Rex gloriae, Christe. Tu, devicto mortis aculeo, aperuisti credentibus regna caelorum. Tu ad dexteram Dei sedes, in gloria Patris. Iudex crederis esse venturus. (Ad hoc versum omnes se inclinant) Te ergo quaesumus, tuis famulis subveni: quos pretioso sanguine redemisti. Æterna fac cum sanctis tuis in gloria numerari. Salvum fac populum tuum, Domine, et benedic hereditati tuæ. Et rege eos, et extolle illos usque in æternum. Per singulos dies benedicimus te; Et laudamus Nomen tuum in sæculum, et in sæculum sæculi. Dignare, Domine, die isto sine peccato nos custodire. Miserere nostri domine, miserere nostri. Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos, quemadmodum speravimus in te. In te, Domine, speravi: non confundar in æternum.

I can't understand, why a lot of people negotiate an "european" culture. Of course, each country in Europe has its own culture. But music ignore every border of each country. Music is written for the whole mankind, should bring happiness to all the people listening to it. The European Community shows both sides of the coin: The differencies in all countries, making Europe colorful. It reminds us, there are a lot of things we have in common. We have the order to look for these communalities. Music helps us seeking for them. We really understand this art of music if we find them

This was the official song used for all of the most important events by the great monarchies of pre-revolutionary Europe, this more fully sounding version coming in the early eighteenth century when they started moving away from quartets.

The thirst for Eurovision and my country’s national election for our representing in ESC is ever growing to the grade that I am watching the national selections from 2020 again and I will soon watch the one from like 1972 or 73 or 74 when ABBA won for us
