THE CHASE 5/24 RULE EXPLAINED
Chase will automatically deny a credit card application if you’ve opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the last 24 months that appear on your credit report.
TRANSLATION…
In order to be eligible for a Chase credit card, you need to have 4 or fewer new credit card accounts on your credit report in the last 24 months.
IMPORTANT
The Chase 5/24 Rule is NOT the only requirement to get approved with Chase. They still look at your credit score, credit factors, income, debts, card usage and more just like any other credit card application from another bank.
WHAT COUNTS TOWARDS CHASE 5/24
- Personal Credit Cards from all banks opened within the past 24 months that are still open. This includes personal charge cards.
- Personal Credit Cards from all banks opened within the past 24 months that were already cancelled / closed. This includes personal charge cards.
- Business Credit Cards issued by Discover, TD Bank and Capital One. Reason: These business cards DO show up on your personal credit report (Exception: Capital One Spark Cash cards no longer report for new applications).
- Authorized User Credit Cards from someone else’s personal credit card account or charge card account (Workaround: Call the Chase Reconsideration Line to have these excluded from your 5/24 count).
- Store Credit Cards that are part of a national payment network (Visa, Mastercard, etc.). Possible that single-location store cards now count.
WHAT DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS CHASE 5/24
- All credit/charge cards for which you apply but get denied. Reason: Inquiries do not count toward 5/24.
- Business credit cards from other banks for which you apply and get approved (exceptions mentioned on prior slide). Reason: Most business credit cards DO NOT report to your personal credit report, so Chase won’t see them.
- Business credit cards issued by Chase: You need to be under 5/24 to get approved, but once you are approved, your 5/24 count will not increase.
- Non-Bank-Card Products: Mortgages, auto loans, student loans, etc. do not count toward 5/24. Reason: Only bank cards count.
HOW TO CHECK CHASE 5/24 STATUS - VIA MOBILE APP
1. Sign up for a Credit Karma account
2. Download Credit Karma app and sign in
3. Select TransUnion or Equifax box
4. Tap on Total accounts
5. Count all bank cards opened within the last 24 months
HOW TO CHECK CHASE 5/24 STATUS - VIA DESKTOP / LAPTOP
1. Sign up for a Credit Karma account
2. Sign in via this link: www.creditkarma.com/myfinance...
3. Click on Accounts tab
4. Click on Open Date to sort all accounts from oldest to newest
5. Count all bank cards opened within the last 24 months
POTENTIAL CHASE 5/24 BYPASS
If you see a ‘Black Star’ - For Business Owners offer under the ‘Just For You’ section of the Main Menu, the offer might bypass the 5/24 Rule.
CHASE 5/24 STRATEGY FOR CREDIT CARD APPLICATIONS
1. If you’re early in your credit journey and want Chase cards, get those first. Reason: You can get approvals with other banks after 5/24, but not Chase.
2. If you always want to be eligible for a Chase card, do not apply for more than 2 credit cards per year. Reason: 2 cards per year = 4 cards in 24 months, meaning you’ll always be below 5/24.
3. If you’re at or over 5/24…want to get back under…but still want more cards & signup bonuses…then apply for BUSINESS credit cards. Reason: Most business cards will not increase your 5/24 count. (Note exceptions with Discover, TD Bank and Capital One; others could exist, too.)
4. On the exact day you fall below 5/24, STILL WAIT at least until the 1st day of the following month before applying for a Chase credit card. Reason: Chase’s system may need time to refresh and for your credit report to be updated. (Note: I recommend waiting 30 days.)
Credit Cards Subject to Chase 5/24 Rule
ALL CHASE CREDIT CARDS, including...
- Chase Freedom Flex
- Chase Freedom Unlimited
- Chase Sapphire Preferred
- Chase Sapphire Reserve

💥👉 *NOTES: (1)* When I said *Authorized User Card count toward 5/24,* I was referring to _YOU being the Authorized User._ So to clarify, if you are are an AU on someone else's account, then that will increase YOUR 5/24 count by 1. On the other hand, if you are the Primary Cardholder and add someone else to your card, then THEIR 5/24 count will increase by 1...not yours 😃👍 *(2) Product Changes (i.e. upgrading or downgrading a card) will NOT affect your 5/24 status* - unless the product change involves closing out your account and opening a new one. Be sure to confirm with the bank that switching to a new card product will keep your current account open & all the account history intact (which is usually the case) 👍 *(3) The 5/24 Rule may also apply to credit limit increases.* Here's a link to a blog post by Doctor of Credit from 7.07.2020: www.doctorofcredit.com/chase-applying-the-5-24-rule-for-credit-limit-increases/

Great informative video! It’s bit hilarious for CHASE to have this rule in place, when they themselves use credit cards to make money off of their customers! Agreed that credit card abuse (for welcome bonus) is not great, but that does come back to haunt the customer as well, messing up the credit report. In that case a rule like this sounds being overprotective, but CHASE has always been very rigid with their credit cards for some reason. Anyway, thanks for putting this together! 👍🏻

1. A product change does not impact 5/24. 2. A cancelation does not impact 5/24. However, even if closed, that account will still count towards 5/24 if it was opened in the last 24 months. Chase only looks at open dates...not close dates. 3. Opening a new card does impact 5/24.

Hey Mark, great video! One quick question tho, I've read elsewhere that amex charge cards don't count towards the 5/24. I think I can confirm this because I just apply for the Freedom Flex earlier this week and was approved! I have opened 4 charge cards and 3 credit cards in the past 12 months. So only makes sense the charge cards didn't count towards the 5/24. Any thoughts on this? Thanks 😊🙏

The Visa designation only matters if you value the additional benefits (mainly insurance protections) that come with it. If you want a CFU Visa Signature, I'd suggest calling Chase to have them process the change for you. You may need to reallocate some credit from another card to get it to $5,000.

Hi Johnny! Income requirements are not published, so I am not sure. More important will likely be income to debt / expense ratio, meaning Chase will be more interested in how much you make versus how big your expenses and debts currently are. Hey Ace! When you open your 5th card, the 2-year clock does not begin then. Rather, Chase looks at the past 24 months on a rolling basis. When i checked my credit karma, it shows my chase sapphired preferred, chase flex cc, chase unlimited, and amazon cc from chase, and also the BB&T(for this bank i only applied business credit card and opened a checking account for business). It did not show when i applied for chase ink business unlimited (which i was approved and got the cc). I am planning to apply for marriot bonvoy but not sure if i reached 5/24 rule already. For the bb&t the description in credit karma says ALL BANKS and for my chase cc it says NATIONAL CREDIT CARD COS. I know bbt was not mentioned in the vide but just to ask first before i will apply for marriot. Please advise and thanks again. Big support for your videos. You are the best😊

Hi Maria - to clarify, does your BB&T business credit card appear on your credit report?

@@MarkReese Nope. No new cards for now. I really don't need more cards, or any card, so I charge everything to a card, and use the "payback" rewards (which can be as high as 25% more points) to give myself redemption credits at different percentages on the various items I purchase. They have even wiped out some original charges, meaning that I am getting "free stuff" by using the card. PLUS, THE CREDIT BUREAUS "DING" YOU FOR APPLYING FOR CREDIT, as a hard hit, which reduces your credit score. The less hard-hits, the higher your score goes up! GREAT JOB & KEEP UP YOUR GOOD WORK. Stay safe and healthy, my young friend!

If You sign up for a Travel Freely Account at travelfreely.net and log your travel based credit cards, there is an accurately timed 5/24 counter which will give you the exact date that You will be eligible to apply if you are currently over 5/24. Please note that even if You become eligible to apply during a particular month, YOU WILL NOT be eligible to actually apply until the first of the following month. Example: If You go under 5/24 on November 15th, You cannot apply until at least December 1st. Thanks for clarifying this rule toward the end of the video.

It depends on the issuer. Some report and some do not. My wife is an authorized user on several of my accounts. Her AmEx authorized user cards appear on her credit report. Her Chase card does not. Chase never even asked me for her social security number. AmEx requires a social security number. If the back reports it to your credit report it matters.
