Aug 2017 For the first time ever the World's Fastest Motorcycles competed on the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. The world's largest salt flat, at an elevation of 12,000ft. Al Lamb was on a quest to surpass his own 262.471mph FIM World Fastest Sit-On Motorcycle Record and break the 300mph barrier. However, a competitor Ralph Hudson had the same idea. It was an epic fight for the title of "FIM World's Fastest Motorcycle".

ABOUT THE MOTORCYCLE:
The bike started as a Honda CBR1000RR. It’s turbo charged with a liquid cooled Intercooler. We can make up to about 500hp at the rear wheel. It has a custom M800 Motec system which logs 22 channels of data every run. It’s equipped with Ohlins suspension front and rear with Marchesini wheels. The body an Airtech Charlie Toy body has over 40 hours of wind tunnel development to arrive at its current configuration. It’s also wrapped with a vinyl perforated wrap like a golf ball. We build all the specialized parts from coolant and fuel tanks to sub frames, fairing mounts, weight boxes, wheel dish covers to the ice water intercooler. I can go faster with just my body and gravity in freefall under 18k feet. I've hit 288mph head down towards the earth under 18k feet. The world record is 350mph under 18k. The 3 stratosphere jumpers all went over 800mph.

Nobody will ever surpass Burt Munroe. No matter what record is broken. You have to put all in perspective. But this is still amazing. Wish Burt was still around.

To see what burt did back in his day with with an engine and tires not even close to what is available now just speaks for itself. He was a genius ahead of his time. With today's technology I bet burt would surpass 300.

These guys are in their 60's and still doing serious work on 2 wheels. Love it! I'm 51 and still riding my Zx10r deep the twisties on track days. I always get strange looks when people see me remove my helmet after some good laps. The greater the speed ...- the stronger the will. Keep it up Al and Ralph!

At 70 years I got a 1st in Class C motorcycle (187.7 mph) and a 2nd in Class B motorcycle doing 215.0 MPH at the 2018 Mojave Magnum at the Mojave, CA Air & Spaceport. With osteoarthritis and 2 metal hips and one metal shoulder you just gotta keep going. I was signed up to ride Ted Rich's (Sportbike Performance Center, Phoenix, AZ) Bonneville streamliner in 2019 but Ted Rich and Elaine Carpenter were both killed when their new racing biplane crashed outside Deer Valley Airport Aug. 2018. The nicest part of this story comes at time 14:10 when the two are together, shaking hands and Mr. Lamb patting Mr. Hudson on the shoulder. Serious competition, but with friendship and full respect. There needs to be more people like these two gentlemen in the world. Especially in politics. What a beautiful story and video. Thank you so much for bringing this to us. Best wishes.

At 12,000 ft, there's a loss less air density - so the engines don't make as much power as sea level, but then again, there's less air resistance! Since there's less density to make power, a turbo is needed. But if the turbos is too small (like used at sea level), the bike will overspeed it (less air for the compressor side) and blow it up. Altitude sickness also affects some people. So a lot of differences at altitude! I wonder how the FIM compares speeds at Bonneville, here in Bolivia, and sea level. Since there's different air resistance, speeds are different. The salt here seems to give more traction than Bonneville, too. Great video !! Congrats!

The down force from the fairings would be all different as well, those bikes must be riding the ragged edge of becoming very low altitude cruise missiles.

It is a catch 22. Thinner air makes it fast. It is also colder air which keeps the turbos colder. The air Pressure on the tires is huge. Just depends on how much force you are using on induction.

the traction issue is probably due to this lake being pretty virgin to land-speed and racing use. Bonneville has had well over 70 years of cars tearing it to pieces, making the salt somewhat less compacted.

Open motorcycle at over 200 mph on salt is very challenging. Margins for error is extremely small. I am very impressed. Many think they could do it but those have tried know better. Salt Flat racing begins next fall at Bonneville for those interested in racing closer to home. Just a reminder insurance companies don't pay out when your racing.

It amazes me on how calm both of these men are looking and acting so calm. I guess that is what it takes. Plus a huge amount of maturity on both of their shoulders. Great team members on both teams also manage to figure out and get the most speed, HP, and stability out of their bikes. Bravo for Al Lamb who is near me (Plano) and for his sponsors!

Claire De la Cerna 200 is a lot different than 280.. Most street bike can get close to 200 but once you het so fast even getting that extra 1mph can take loads of hp/aero/weight/traction modifications

Assuming the aerodynamic drag coefficient on the two bikes was the same, it would take twice as much power to overcome aero drag at 280 mph as 200 mph, because aero drag is a function of velocity squared. Rear tire slippage also saps power, so they probably using all 500 hp the engine produces.

@@CBRuRedE1 I build everything myself for decades; can profiles, cams valves flywheel no pistons...lol. Pushing past 200 takes more and more just to inch past. Burt is a hero to me, but I only learnt about him when the movie was released. I had hopes of making the 200 club, it's almost impossible while raising kids. Burt's trial and error method works but only so far and fast. After it becomes life and death. I'll catch up in my next life..cheers

Literally running on the salt is like driving on fairly smooth pavement with sand spread over it interspersed with damp areas that give you minimal traction and a degree of hydroplaning. Traction is a huge issue, throttle control and no sudden power applications. Further any speed over 140 mph will virtually rip you off the bike and every increase in speed makes you tuck so hard it hurts. Don’t lift your head, your neck will snap. I have done 170 on pavement and while crew at Bonneville we set a class record for a non streamlined bike in the 1650 gas class. Such a unique experience, cleaning the salt off inner fenders and building salt men like snowmen because it was damp enough to stick together like wet snow. Bravo any speed over 200 on a bike is a feat few experience.

They really should have taken that in account when they designed the bike any one in a drag car will tell you the the wheels expand a lot when you are driving 150+ miles per hour. That’s why most people are now racing on 1/8 strips instead of 1/4 the heat generated is to much. So they should have known the a finder 4” from the wheel wouldn’t be enough

Al's bike got stuck in customs for the recent 2018 attempt and never made it. Ralph's bike did make it and he was able to push his record even higher.

The FIM inspector has to check a fully custom hand built motorcycle. Minimal parts. Extra race parts. The inspector probably just make sure the thing has tires haha. What else can he realistically check?

You check everything between the front and the rear. I've been doing it for ten years and all you do is adapt the methods used for normal racing machinery.

FIM does have rules about how custom things are made, as do most governing bodies in motorsport. Most governing bodies also tend to keep their rules quite close to one another, it makes it easier to scrutinise international races. For instance MSA (Motorsport South Africa) regs state that a fuel cell (tank) has to feature baffles or neoprene foam inside to stop the fuel sloshing around and potentially upsetting balance. Any parts that bolt on eg. Brake calipers have to be lock wired, fastening them in place, to prevent them flying off if fasteners, capscrews etc. work loose. There are also minimum and maximum gaps between fenders and tyres... Just about everything on a race bike has a rule or a min/max tolerance, it's actually quite a pain in the ass LOL

Glad they've discovered the Solar de Uyuni! Twice as high as Bonneville. I love it there, spent lots of time at Uyuni on trips to see the flamingos at lakes near the Chilean border that are up to 15,000ft. Thinner air shoulld allow speeds well above Bonneville although supercharging will be required; natural aspiration at that altitude yields very little power. How in the world to the flamingos fly?

Supercharging is not the answer because it takes power from the engine to make power at the wheel (parasitic) Turbocharging is the answer to high level racing & makes far more power (pro rata) than any other form of forced induction.

@@peterherrington3300 the blower on a top fuel engine takes over 300 horsepower to drive it. A drop in the bucket when the engine makes over 11000 horsepower.

Running @ 12Kft has to be grueling on everyone. Jaunting down to Bolivia make a few runs can't be cheap either. Not like loading up the trailer and road-tripping to Bonneville.

Frank it was extremely tough. Making it happen took a ton of work. Then the logistical nightmare and dealing with customs caused several containers to arrive a week late. As the filmmaker I suffered from extreme Altitude Sickness (HACE) and (HAPE) for five days. The bikes arriving late worked for me as I didn't even know where I was for a few days. Some of the riders had symptoms too and each dealt with it in their own way.

Bonneville has been getting rained out the last few years. If Bolivia is available on a consistent basis then ya might be better off tuning for the air there. Remember that folks come from all over the world to Bonneville so travel to Bolivia, no big deal.

There was a team from New Zealand that made a trip to Bonneville in 2018, ran a record speed over 300 mph in F/GS and didn't get to make a backup run due to rain. From my understand they are planning to go to Boliva in 2023, but the car will run in a different class.

Reading/seeing Burt cast his own pistons out of unique mystery alloys shows a remarkable dedication and sensitive, impassioned ingenuity. I'd seen/known about racers doing that before but seeing the lengths Burt went really impressed me with his resolves to go the extra mile. A champion in the best sense of the word that the very best of those who chase their dream, demanding the best of which they're capable, share. Incredibly inspirational.

There is a lot of variables when it comes to hp these types of motorcycle make. Total displacement. Compression ratio. Amount of boost. Air density. Fuel. Etc. But having worked for Mr Turbo when we where the first company to produce a turbo kit for the Suzuki Hayabusa, I can tell you that on a completely stock engine (10.5 cr) 116 octane fuel. 10 lbs of boost in Houston Texas produced 250 hp at the rear wheel. The company had other bike with modified engines that produced in excess of 700 hp at the rear wheel.

Sorry but gearing has nothing to do with horsepower figures. Gearing will affect how the power is supplied to rear wheel not how much total horsepower the engine will produce.

That thing would probably kill you. Bad aero and frankly, it's a showpiece. Not purpose engineering. The boss hoss is more blatantly not made to stay stable(there's worrying videos of wobble etc) at the speeds it could reach engine wise and I'd be afraid you'd not be better of with that other thing. ..... I'd love to see a crash dummy in a leather combo fall at 300mph though

It wont go near that fast on the salt, nor at that altitude. Asphalt is one thing, salt is another. There is a significant amount of wheel slip (spin) on the salt.

This is stupid. Why are they always trying to break speed records on salt? Its like having a 100 meter sprint on the beach. Moto GP bikes can hit 220mph in very short distances. You telling me they cant find a nice paved road longer than a race track???

I may have been wrong about top speed (officially the top speed 221.5 mph, set by Andrea Dovizioso), but that’s pretty damn close to what these guys are doing on their super modified, turbo charged bikes that are made to only go in a straight line. So yeah, it is the salt, asshole. Just because something has been done for a long time, doesn’t mean it makes sense.

About 9 months later a average speed of 297.970 was set by Ralph Hudson. And one of the runs was over 300 coming in at 304.969. Hes 67 and did it with a bike he got off craigslist also.
