On October 2, 2018, Team Vesco's Turbinator II with Dave Spangler driving became the first wheel drive car to exceed the 500 mph barrier. Owner, designer and builder, Rick Vesco and his late brother Don began to pursue this goal 17 years ago. Tragically Don died of cancer in 2002 and never saw his dream fulfilled. In 2013 Rick began to upgrade the car with a new turbine engine, new drive train, new traction control, new brakes and new body. It was sweet success when on the first (and only) day of the World Finals event on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Dave Spangler powered the car through to a spectacular 503 mph run!

Wow, I thought the driver would use up the 11 miles and then some, he was so late with the parachute, that takes guts. I love the runs at Bonneville, Black Rock Desert runs draw up so much dust you lose sight of the cars and once they pass the camera you can only see a giant cloud of smoke. I hope the Utah officials understand that if they don’t take drastic actions they’ll lose the raceway forever. The state gets peanuts from the mineral companies who draw away millions of gallons of salt water so it can’t dry and thicken the salt layer. In the 60’s the salt was over a foot thick now it’s just a few inches with bare spots.

Wow, ya, that's it! Thanx for sharing this. After perusing some photographs it looks like some of you get to Washington county now & then. I live in St. George these days. I was just wondering, how does the team work? I assume most of it is volunteer work, right? I really know nothing about racing as far as what goes on inside a racing team. I met I guy once that's head mechanic for an F-1 team but that's totally different, big money, everybody working on the cars is getting paid usually. But back to my point... I just finished school for manual and cnc machining. I don't have any of my own machines to speak of yet but I'm working on it. I'm almost done repairing a Mori-Seki AL-2 Lathe that's had a control panel overall and trying to get a Mori SL-2 lathe online, both of which I'll have pretty much unlimited access to. Also, I still have permission to use the schools machines. So I was just wondering if you have the need for machining from time to time or if the team has that covered. It would be voluntary, of course. If needed, it would be a pleasure to do something like that. I need the experience too. Mind you I'm not a seasoned machinist so if you need tolerances in the + or - 2/10,000ths area you'd be better off with someone else but I'm getting pretty good at not screwing up when it has to be withing half a thousandth to a thousandth. I've worked in similar fields and I'm 42 so I'm not green, like an 18-year-old who just got into the industry. No offense to 18-year olds. Also, if the team is one that will take any help you can get like what I saw of that Spirit Of America team, I could appeal to Dixie Technical College for you (school I went to) they love stuff like this and the new campus is built right on the runway of the old St. George airport. ...well, the PREVIOUS airport anyway. The new airport is built on the actual "old" airport. Between that and them putting the the new Dixie Tech. campus on the other airport, now we don't have a place to drag race in the middle of the night. Mo&^%^ F%@*$rs!!!

I thought it'd pull a lot more negative G's when the shoot came out at 480 mph. Also why did he steer off into the rough salt like that?

You have to get off the track to clear it for the next racer. There are turnouts drug at certain intervals but you really have to turn off when the speed of the car is correct in order to coast over to the return road if the car isn't still under power
