Legions of Bay Area Aki's Hawaiian Guava Chiffon Cake fans (including me!) still desperately chase the fix, even 15 years after Aki's Bakery closed shop. Many local bakeries have tried to reproduce the famed cake and in this epic adventure, we chase the top four contenders.

When my wife and i got married, we had Aki's Guava Cake for our wedding cake. Everyone loved it. We were so sad when they closed down. Today is our 9 year anniversary, and i bought my wife the La Patisserie Guava cake. She said its 9/10 exactly like Aki's. Thanks for showing us where to find it.

This video is too crazy! I searched guava cakes to see if I could make the guava cake at home and came across this video. My grandma lived in San Jose and used to bring home this cake ALL the time from the original bakery. She recently passed and I knew the place closed down years ago but just hearing the story really made me smile. I wish things were open now so I could buy the cake or I could find the recipe to try and make it.

Hi Talia! There definitely are guava chiffon cake recipes online you can try. To get it close to Aki's may require a bit of trial and error. Good luck and save me a piece if it turns out! :)

Hope you were able to buy a good one! Thinking about it now is making my mouth water - lol. I have half a La Patisserie guava cake in my freezer I think I will defrost for this week...

Thank you for chasing Aki's Hawaiian Guava Chiffon Cake...or something close to it. I loved their Guava cake and would drive from Pleasant Hill to San Jose all the time for the cake. I was looking for a Guava Cake recipe to make for my son's birthday on Friday and found your video. I am so glad I did. I am going to order a cake from LaPatisserie in Cupertino. Thank you so much!!

It was not wise to watch this before going to sleep. Now I’m hungry 😂. I’ve never had guava cake nor have I seen it over here. Next time we visit this is on our list haha. Love the comparison. They all looked so different.

That was a good video to share on FB and San Francisco Remembered group to see who use to eat Aki's.. Guava cake is pretty available all over markets and restaurants with bakeries here in Hawaii. I think Liliha Bakery is the one people go for a lot.

Hallo! Long time no chat ;) U guys are so lucky in Hawaii - but I've frozen the other 3/4 of my cake from La Patisserie and hopefully that will keep me for awhile. Is Liliha is Honolulu? Will have to look out for it next time I'm over there.

These cakes are the BEST! I’m dying inside watching you eat this! Foodland grocery stores in Honolulu made these and 🤤 🤤. I could eat the whole cake. THEN you said Filipino deserts?! Cassava cakes are also great!!!

If you're in Houston I think the Asian population there should be large enough to have a guava cake somewhere :) BUT there are a ton of recipes on the internet for guava chiffon cake if you feel like doing some baking. Good luck!

La Patisserie’s Guava cake is friggin delicious!! It’s my go to and had it last week!!! Call ahead to reserve one or just order it !! Refreshing, moist and sweet and yes, I would love more jelly in between 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Love the guava chiffon pancakes and syrup at Cinnamons (original location) on Oahu. The Flour Flour one looks like the one at Schuberts.

I’m such a huge fan of Aki’s Bakery. I too have tried to find the closest cousin, but no one has hit the mark. LP looks like it and one of the staff members said the cream is a guava mouse. When Aki’s closed, the group that was given the recipe used it in 3 of its bakery’s, but it was not a close relative to me. I’ve even taken a class ay CAKEWORKS. It looked similar with the piping, glaze , the cake itself was way dense. The instructor used a recipe thats all over google from Guava Rose and it was not a replica. I have a few places to test out and crossing everything that I find one that I love.

Good luck and please share if you find it! I got a recommendation in these comments to try out a bakery down in L.A. that also makes it so that will be my next adventure. Hopefully find something there that’s even closer than LP!

Hi there! What a fun challenge! The cake at La Patisserie looked wonderful, and I'm glad you found a guava cake which is beautiful and tasty. At Elite Bakery, even though it wasn't this particular challenge, I'm so curious about the Ube Cake. That looked really yummy. Thanks for the video!

Go see the owner Cero Anthony and the original Akis bakery daughter and son who work at Cake Expressions @ De La Cruz Blvd. SC. They may be putting the Original cake out to the public real soon. OMG! Just watched your last review at Flower Flour on Willow St. Was my families old flower shop that used to be called Town Flowers. My families events floral business Flower Divas is also off De La Cruz Blvd. SC. Shameless plug. ♡ I am sure you will rank Cake Expressions for the best guava cake by the ORIGINALS if they decide to start putting it out to the public. May be that the chase is over. Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I didn't see it on their website but likely a visit is in order to get at a "secret menu." So funny about Flower Flour -- now it totally makes sense why the owner called it that!

I find myself that cake guava really nice cake... seems to be very texture great cakes also Hawaii famous flavor cake. ..really never seen guava cake kind of color very unique color very gorgeous...i wanna go try there Hawaii traditional guava cake...

Enjoyed this video being from Hawaii, my taste for Guava Chiffon Cake was only bested by Strawberry Shortcake from Dutch Girl Bakery in the Chun-Hoon Everybody Market shopping center, so creamy. Btw, ever had the Blum Coffee Crunch Cake currently had only (that I know of) from Yasukochi's Sweet Stop om Japantown SF? So good! @@ZeeneInRealLife very nice, tho my lack of clarity, I am originally from Hawaii nei, tho live in SF currently, going on 40yrs, and well under the lockdown, so far. Just heard that The National Guard were being dispersed in LA and NYC, w/the go ahead for SF to begin. Also, a neighbors friend has been ticketed and arrested for ignoring lockdown protocols by trying to drive over to visit. These are serious times, and your videos encourage me to visit my memories of "kid time" (local ref erences for being children or keikis) growing up when we had little or no cares, when our grandparents, parents, aunties and uncles would bring cakes and pies over when they visited and another memorable moment was born and cataloged for future reference.😆 Thanks for the memories!

I have not yet! I think another viewer recommended the bakery and I was originally planning to shoot an LA sequel but it's been postponed due to covid. Hopefully I get get down there soon to check it out. Thanks for the reco!
