Enourmous load for the poor steam loco!
@adriannettlefold90842 жыл бұрын
Everybody is an armchair expert these days aren't they... but unlike most, I've worked steam here in Queensland Australia 🇦🇺. The crew seem to be doing a decent job. That being said, I noticed that the engine was blowing off at the safety valves hard which is something that should be avoided. It can cause priming, which is when water in the boiler is carried over into the steam pipe which can at the least wash lubricant from the cylinder walls and make the engine work harder, and at worst, water hammer and punch the front piston cover clear off. I think many people forget how hard these Locomotives were made to work back during WWII, so 28 wagons/coaches is probably quite within this engine's capability. Gradient rules in the end. Loved seeing the 4014 back in 2019 when I visited the States.

funny how many people don't know the capacity of a Berk 64.000 is somewere round about 50 loaded freight cars (plus/minus)
@viktordubowskii6953 жыл бұрын
Yes, but don't forget, if you have to go up a grade that plays a significant role in capacity. A 2% grade cuts that in half if not more.

I have an audio cd with a recording of her starting 32 cars plus the PM 1225 (which had gone lame, so 765 was doing all the work), starting on a curved, 0.5% uphill grade from a stop, accelerating to 40 mph in about four minutes without slipping once.
