In today's episode we're looking into one of the most controversial cases and trials in India's history.
Two bodies would be found in the space of two days. There would be many twists and turns over the next 10 years. Evidence would be destroyed, crimes scenes would be contaminated, arrests would be made, followed by releases.
As of 2023, the case remains officially unsolved, and the same question still remains.
What happened on May 16th, 2008?

The fact that the parents right away said Hemraj did it , asked the maid to clean the rooms while the police is still there and stopped the police from going to the terrace says so many things. The crime scene was contaminated too.

I forgot about them telling the maid to clean the room 🫢 For me, as soon as I heard the parents didn't answer the phone (and weren't dead themselves), didn't call the police ASAP and the terrace was unusually locked and he wanted no one up there (if true he paid the cops to look elsewhere for Hemraj), I was sure of two things: 1) The father was the murderer, the mother was covering for him 2) Hemraj was dead on the terrace somewhere. Personally, I felt the father killed the daughter (disobeying him, or some reason) and killed Hemraj AFTERWARDS so he'd have a suspect nobody would be able to find and he would look suspicious as he would seem to be on the run (and not dead on the terrace).

I have a theory. Considering they suspect she was raped, I think possibly the man living there (sorry bad with names) had been grooming and sexually assaulting her. He could have threatened her to say it was consensual if they were caught. On top of that, some cultures still believe that a girl/woman is just as much to blame when she’s raped and “unclean”. This has lead to male family members killing the girl/victim in the past, extremely sad and horrific. If the father found his daughter being raped, and she tried to protect her family by saying it was consensual, he could have gone into a rage and killed them both. It would explain everything, including the coverup by both him and his wife.

Things that really stand out for me and make me believe that the parents are the ones that committed the murders: 1. Blaming Hemraj from the get go, without any evidence. 2. Destroying and tampering with the evidence by allowing media and other people inside and having the crime scene cleaned up 3. Bribing the police 4. Asking to keep the mention of rape out of the autopsy report. 5. Cleaning her vagina 6. Saying they don’t want to throw any allegations on anyone and then saying it’s possible that it could be the help when they’ve already got alibis.

Why is it only speculated that the father caught his daughter in a compromising position? Why was it never considered that Hemraj caught Rajesh abusing his daughter? His wife said he felt fatherly towards Arushi. The boyfriend said she had been having problems with her father. If something had been going on, low-key, and that night it escalated, he, Hemraj, might have felt he needed to step in. Which led to his murder, and then Arushi‘s, in order to prevent her from spilling the beans, about the abuse and subsequent murder. That to me seems the most likely.

@Nick Young I have watched a lot of videos on this channel and there is a stark contrast in how such cases are handled in developed vs developing countries. Delayed action is so common that it's a norm here. In cases from US and Europe I see police rushing to secure the crime scene and preserve every single piece of forensic and DNA evidence and still sometimes struggle to find the actual criminals. In our country, media and huge crowds will reach before the police to get those first pictures. Cases being solved by DNA evidence is a rare occurrence.

Hemraj looked upon the daughter as his own daughter and may have came to her rescue inturn being killed by the father and dragged up to the terrace where he was dumped and the door remained locked. The evidence of blood trail proves he was moved up there. Also the daughter's boyfriend claimed she was having difficulty with her father leading up to this. I definitely think he was the killer and in his drunken panic chose to slay his daughter aswell so as to keep her quiet and not have his reputation tarnished. The mother too helped cover it all up.

The wife was in on it, cleaned up the crime scene and their daughters body. Both of them dragged Hemraj’s body up to the terrace and both work together to cover up themselves. They would rather kill and cover up than expose themselves and ruin their reputations since they were well known doctors in the community. Sab vaasta ki baat hai, such people have connection in high up places and one phone call can change the story. Their daughter has died in a mysterious way and they are requesting the Post Mortem doctors not to mention rape? They could not protect the daughter, but worry about family honour which to me is also suspicious. Poor arushi just lay there in her bed and died taking the truth with her. See the nirbhaya case - it happened in delhi, 4 hanged - their backgrounds were dalit etc etc basically they were poor. See Talwar case - again in delhi - 50 days in prison and out with no evidence to prove they were innocent, let loose on emotional grounds cause parents cant do it. Look at the Sheena Bora case - that mother of hers is doing womens rights or jail rights from her cell...no remorse. Crimes happen at every level.....but the rope is too weak for the people with contacts. This was either an honour killing, or a case of sexual abuse by the father which was seen by hemraj. Arushi had to die as she might have given away who killed hemraj and why. Alot goes on in regular families that is never revealed, but nothing is impossible.

Often times, especially where a complex crime is committed like this which involves 2 murders (related or unrelated we dont know), I cannot even trust the police report because even with all evidences, there still is 5% chance that innocent people are put in jail; as has been the case in India in the past. It is very rare for a rich and influential person who has committed a crime to sit behind bars, not only in India but in most countries. This is one such case. If Talwars were not the culprit, then trust me they would not have left any stone unturned to catch the actual culprits. They are intelligent people and they knew from the beginning that it is a game of evidences, and this they achieved successfully by allowing for a shoddy investigation during the first week of investigation. They had successfully executed their plan by that time and even if they were implicated still, they knew very well that evidences would never be sufficient for a long term punishment. Being both parents doctors, it can be safely assumed that they are not fools.

Exactly you cannot sleep in the next room and do not realize what is happening in the room next to yours. If the Father was drunk The Mother atleast wasn't and she could've heard it. But both the parents made the same exact statement which shows there more to it than what they were telling. And if they wanted to pin it on Hemraj the butler, atleast his body should've been near the crime scene and not insise the Water storage tank.

This case for me has always equated to the Jon Benet Ramsey case. A child dead, in a house with limited people at the time and in both cases the crime scene was tampered with, rooms/terrace in this case were locked/not allowed access to. Both cases educated and well placed parents invited support who in turn formed early conclusions and helped knowingly or unknowingly with the contamination and clean up of the scene. It's sad this case will like the Job Benet one, may never see the light of justice.

I have been following Arushi - Hemraj murder case from day 1 and from what I have observed and understood so far the parents are the culprits. No the guy who called from PCO was the real killer. I have investigated every possible angle and studied this case for many years. I honestly feel the parents or one parent has something to do with both deaths. Hamraj (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) was killed for trying to protect the daughter. I think he walked in on her being attacked or he knew something going on in the home and felt the need to protect her but was killed in the process. And with this family's status in the community I'm sure they can cover up what really happened.

True, I was also of same age as hers then. This is what I think. Often times, especially where a complex crime is committed like this which involves 2 murders (related or unrelated we dont know), I cannot even trust the police report because even with all evidences, there still is 5% chance that innocent people are put in jail; as has been the case in the country in the past.

@@Sana-ik8fo I understand your point. Keeping in mind that one could never tell what went on in that house that night except the killers and the victims, I don’t think it’s okay to blatantly blame the parents because there was nobody else to blame. In this case, the parents were announced guilty until proven innocent, this is a direct result of having a ridiculous investigation and a joke for law enforcement. The whole case was so focused on the parents, that I don’t think they even had a chance to actually try and find the culprits. Now I don’t think the parents are innocent, all I’m saying is that the evidence could be hampered with by any party i.e., the parents, the servants/drivers, the cops, the CBI etc It’s sad but unfortunately that’s the reality of this case that we’ll all just have to accept.

Here's my thought. The parents had an inkling about her boyfriend and didn't want her to chat with him. Hence, they wanted to turn off the wifi router. And Aarushi turned it back on and started chatting , when her dad came to know about this he started hitting her in rage only to be intervened by Hemraj. This angered Rajesh Talwar and in a fit of rage killed Hemraj in front of Arushi. Fearing she will spill the beans, he killed her too to save his image in society. Then dragged out Hemraj's body and his wife played the role of an accomplice and opened the terrace door while Rajesh was dragging the domestic help's body. Dumped his body upstairs and locked the terrace door. Came back to their apartment and Rajesh went and started to drink whiskey, while his wife placed those toys on the mattress and lowered her daughter's pants exposing her rear to make it look like she was sexually assaulted by Hemraj. Then both of them cleaned the house removing their fingerprints. In the morning when the maid arrived, Rajesh calls the maid to Aarushi's room and showing her tells," look what he has done to her". Who on earth does that? He just wanted to pin the blame on Hemraj and have people believe that he did it, so maid will spread the rumour to people. The verdict is the dad killed them both, the mother an accomplice who covered it up.

100%. The helper saw the little girl as his own daughter and there's no doubt he intervened. The father was enraged that his authority to beat his own daughter would be challenged and he beat the man to death and then to save his own skin he killed the only witness ; his own daughter. He then drank and him and his wife covered it all up. he didn’t want the coroner to look into any rape possibilities because it would come out that she did not get raped so this way they could continue to say that the guy had molested her or that somebody had molested her and killed her so yes in the end sadly that man was not a very good father. I did not watch the whole episode but am aware of what I had read in newspapers/ watched on TV those days. Many questions remain unanswered. 1. Arushi and Hemraj's throats were slit by a surgically trained person and in both cases, the jugular veins were cut. Only a doctor would know how to cut the jugular vein. Initially, Hemraj and other male house help were blamed for the murder. House helps do not have to be 'surgically trained' to chop veggies! 2. As doctors why did the parents not preserve the victim's viscera? They did know that the viscera report would have nailed the culprit. 3. Why the hush-hush cremation the next morning and immediate ash imersion without informing the police, family, and friends? 4. Who cleaned up the victim's private parts? Except for the parents, there was no third person in the house. Why did they clean her up? As doctors, the parents knew how to get rid of evidence to protect the murderer. The parents ensured to clean up all evidence ASAP including cremation. 5. None bothered to check the incest angle. 6. While the investigation was going on (TV), the mother did not break down even once. How is that possible? The daughter was born 10 years after marriage (according to newspapers) and was the only child? I am aware that some women can be tough but how can one not feel for an only child who was born after 10 years of marriage? Personally, I find it strange. 7. The mother did break down finally when she was sentenced with her husband. She broke down again while she was being interviewed inside the jail. I find it bizarre. A woman who did not cry when her only teen daughter is brutally murdered cried because she was convicted. 8. Do not recollect any boyfriend angle in the case. 9. The flat is not so huge that while two murders were being committed, one body was dragged to the terrace after opening the locked gate, and the parents continued to sleep soundly? Find it difficult to digest. 10. I often think about the kid and pray she gets justice and the murderers are caught and put behind for life. You cannot kill a kid full of life and forget about it. 11. Why are the parents not pursuing the case and seeking justice for the brutal murder of their only child? Heartless parents!

This is an excellent analisis! Parents were suspecting something odd that made them to suspect that their own child would have been hiding from them; It was said that their daughter changed in those days. Probably, the child told her parents about someone was sexually abusing her and she named it. Parents could promised their daughter that nothing was going to happen to her that they needed her to help them to caught the one who was sexually abusing her. OR her parents wanted to caught them in that sexual act. Mother didn't lock her room's door, while her child was asleep or pretending being asleep, so she could not lock the door from inside..... A gross honor killing indeed!

Its the parents, everyone knows but no solid evidence to charge them...its so sad..all the evidences was tampered. I rightfully agree with all your points, I also feel bad for Hemraj, he was an innocent house help, but had to die in the tragic way possible. Hemraj used to work there , stay far away from home and own family. Both the victims didn't deserve to die this way...the young girl had miles to go. And as you said the mother broke down when they were being charged in the first place for the murder.. that's the perk of a sociopath..I think the parents are absolute sociopaths to murder their own daughter and then cover it up that too very minutely...they have cleared the crime scene just like a psychopath.

Like another comment below says, I believe the father was drunk on his whiskey and was compromising his daughter when Hemraj discovered them. The mother too helped cover it all up

No intruder came in was unanimous conclusion by all investigative teams, so it's obvious who did it. They obliterated all evidence and pinned blame on shoddy police probe. The way the parents were shying away from blaming anyone else is a give away. Not an iota of grief on their face. And look at how their service in jail, free dental care for inmates is being lauded. It is very strange that parents who lost their young daughter from the start were having a defensive posture instead of strongly urging the authorities to find the real culprits. Lack of emotions at the time of the incident indicates their minds were more pre-occupied with how to cover up or answer questions by the police. After seeing their daughter brutally murdered, they were expected to immediately call the police for help considering their own lives could be in danger. As part of medical profession they should been conscious and protested the contamination of the crime scene by media people having opportunity to enter the premises and contaminating the crime scene.
