UK SITE- www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BL7GPTJ...
WORLDWIDE- www.amazon.com/Cooking-Hungry... Join us in a boat tour of our small sailing home, a 28ft sailboat called Talisman!
We are inexperienced full-time cruisers on our way from the UK to the Mediterranean, living on our Salterns Stag 28. We brought Talisman in October 2019 on the hard, and begun sailing FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME in June 2020.
We made this boat tour whilst we were living in Birmingham and travelling down to the boat each weekend, learning how to sail (and all about boatwork!)
Our boat is small, but mighty in spirit! So we hope you enjoy this small sail boat tour, and our channel, as we take you on our tiny home ocean adventures.
Let us know in the comments what you think of Talisman, and hit us up with any questions you have! Thanks for watching.

Change furler bearings or at a minimum use a grease injector to lubricate the sealed bearings. Probably one of the most overlooked periodic maintenance items.

Oh mate, I have a house full of souvenirs and 'stuff' that I'm struggling to throw away or sell. Let me tell you, this stuff is merely a load of big chains binding you to the spot. None of it is necessary, none of it has much intrinsic value, so if you can avoid souvenir type stuff and just own what you need you are on to a winner. This world is so big and so amazing that our primary responsibility os to see as much of it as you can, without rushing any part of it. It's taken me decades to realise that, and I hope I can start really feasting on it before I peg out!

That was a nice, straightforward tour, by a couple of down-to-earth British sailors - with no tawdry quasi-romantic musak for a change (thank you!). It seems a bit small for two liveaboards, but if you're comfortable within those limits, that's all that matters. I liked that cheat with the roll of stick-on vinyl for the worktop, where others might squander a small fortune on fancy wood or marble. Don't get too professional and slick; the `ad-hoc amateur' presentation is a worthy effort. Enjoy yourselves - that's what it's about...!

Thanks so much for your comment, really appreciate that insight! You never know how you'll come across on camera so this is a relief 😅. Cool storage idea for your quarter berth I saw on another channel: Use two plastic tubs that fit the berth space. Cut a hole on the rear most tub's rim, tie a rope to it long enough to reach your chart desk from the back of the berth. Put the second tub in front of it and shove them both all the way to the back of the quarter berth. When you need something out of these tubs (especially the rearmost one), simply pull the rope and they both will slide out like drawers so you don't have to crawl, stretch and reach!

I've watched quiet a few of these boat tours, from 22' -35'. For me, this is the nicest boat I've seen. The only things I wouldn't do, would be to keep the inflatable inside, where it is. I would keep it in a storage area outside, maybe the area where you said you may paint. I don't think you need to paint the inside, tho I guess it wouldn't hurt. But mainly, I would get the ice box fixed. I know, because I live in Miami, and the heat will get to the food, much faster than in other places, especially England. And the oven and stove, to me, isn't important. Especially since it requires fuel, of some kind, which can be a fire hazard. I would be content with a hot plate, and crock pot. I sail small catamarans, and windsurfers, and am looking for a bigger boat, like this one.
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and suggestions. We agree inflatable isn't ideal where it is, we've also tried in the outside lockers but again it's very hard to reach out of there. We're working on a better solution we hope 🤞 we've actually been onboard without refrigeration for 7 months now and it's fine ☺️ we probably find it easier as we don't eat dairy or meat so don't have much use for one. Wow that's awesome, can imagine you have a lot of fun sailing those! Good luck in your boat searches 😁

I agree that it is NOT necessary to run all lines to the cockpit. Racers like it, but cruising is another thing. On my last boat I found that I still had to leave the cockpit for many sail handling tasks, even with lines run back. I single hand a lot and didn’t bother to move lines to the cockpit on my current boat. I like the simplicity of the at the mast solution.

I have a Bougie RV ice chest size, fridge or freezer. I think I paid less than $200? Pulls a little less than 50 watts. I got it for my little camper for more freezer space so I don't have to buy ice all the time. Thing works great both as bonus house freezer in and when I am on the road. My 300 watt power bank keeps it running for at least 7 hours when I am pulling down the road. It also runs on DC. About the size of a medium ice chest. If you can find a place for an ice chest and get power to it. You have a fridge or a freezer. I keep it on 0, but I t can be set higher for a fridge. Safe travels and enjoyed your video!

Delighted for the pair of you. Wishing you the very best of luck in the adventure! Can't wait for future videos of the prep for the sail to the Med, and updates on what is difficult and what goes wrong! (Not that I think you're not very capable, just that THOSE 'what went wrong and how we got out of it' videos are the MOST useful to newbies like me. Anyway, GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Pressurised water supplies are great but I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to get rid of the manual pump. Having both is infinitely preferable - the leak is almost certainly repairable, it’s usually just an ‘O’ ring that needs replacing Looks like you’re settling into life onboard, enjoy!!
@ChasingCurrents

Hey thanks for commenting 🙂, we're definitely keeping the tap in the head manual incase of a failure. Hopefully it will make our lives a bit easier with pressurised water in the galley. We're definitely settling in 😄 Birmingham doesn't prepare you for living on the water haha Thanks again for commenting 🙂

Excellent video and great looking boat. Your furler might be less likely to jam if you tighten your back stay as the forestay looked a bit slack. Also, flush the lower mechanism out with plenty of fresh water and check the upper swivel is free and the halyard doesn't wrap round the forestay.
@ChasingCurrents

Hey Bernie, thanks for the comment- appreciate the suggestions! We've already done the fresh water, and the halyard doesn't wrap. Will definitely check the forestay 👌

@@ChasingCurrents I had a Plastimo furler and eventually got it to work really well by changing out the plastic ball bearings with stainless. The plastic balls weren't round! Also, totally against everyone's advice I used light grease. But the back stay tension did have an effect and might be worth trying first.

Catching up on your videos after seeing your Biscay crossing. I have a 30 foot boat that I've been upgrading in a similar way to yourselves. I found myself nodding in agreement a lot watching your tour and rationals behind your decisions. I have a 25L Dometic 12v fridge that i absolutely love and happens to fit a space on my boat, easy on the amps but a bit pricy if super budget conscious. Lovely boat by the way, great storage!

Thanks so much for your comment Mark. We're definitely happy with the upgrades we've carried out, and after living onboard now for a while the space is more than ample for the two of us 😁 glad you agree too! We had thought about getting some kind of similar fridge, but after now going so long without - I don't think we need one. (Warm beers are the compromise, so we switched to wine 😂)

Very nice little setup ... lots of storage for a 28. My only pet peeve is the door to the V-berth ... it would really have made more sense to use a pocket door ... when space is tight a pocket door can save so much space.

Great tour, so good to hear that you are making the leap of faith......and I am now subscribed. I noticed that your bilge pump handle has a line wrapped around it. This is so that you can tether the handle, you definitely don't want to loose it over board in heavy seas, which is when you could be needing it the most. Please tether/tie it on, even if it is onto a point inside the locker.

That was a good video. I'd never heard of a Saltern Stag before but it certainly gets a good write up in Yachting World. You both strike me as having the right attributes to be successful liveaboards and cruisers. The first of these (IMO) is not having a boat which is too big. IMO again, if you want to minimise stress have simple systems which you can understand and maintain yourselves, and basically try and create a life which enables you to be independent and costs less than you can afford. Tolerate a few hardships and inconveniences rather than go for the big boat, at least until you know you like the lifestyle. If nothing else I'm sure you've found that living aboard in a marina you meet some very interesting people. In the UK it's relatively cheap compared to living ashore. This latter is something I've been finding in recent years since owning a house! Are there many other liveaboards in the marina? How are you coping with condensation? That's the worst problem IMO in the UK in winter. I reckon if you can live through winter together on this boat in the present restrictions and still like eachother at the end you'll be fine! I've subscribed so look forward to checking out the videos you've made and seeing what you get up to in the future. It's cold at the moment but the days are really lengthening now. It will soon be spring. Cheers from Cornwall.

Thanks so much for your comment. Yes, we hadn't heard of them either - it blew our minds when we went on-board as the layout felt so much more spacious than other similar sized boats and she was in great condition - been looked after well. Couldn't agree more, we're happy with our choice so far. Buying cheap and small also meant we could afford all the appropriate safety equipment for our travels! Yes we definitely have met some great people, there's 42 liveaboards in total at our marina - some very interesting characters! We've actually not had TOO much trouble with condensation. We we're getting some at the start of winter, but we hooked up a dehumidifier and that's worked a treat. Ahh thank you for subscribing, we can't wait for the spring so our big adventure can begin. Really hope you enjoy our videos 😁

Your willingness to cut the dock lines and just go for it when many people have prevalent feelings are to always feel that boats are never quite ready yet is admirable although stating that you don’t have a holding tank could get you in trouble in certain marinas so be careful saying it while out and about. Fair winds!

Ahhh you two are too cute for words. You remind me of my wife and I starting off sailing. We're from Wolverhampton and Wednesfield so we can understand you. Lol. After a few years flotilla sailing we both retired early, bought a Beneteau Oceanis 351 and lived in Levkas Marina for a few years. I'm really itching to get back on the water. Whatever happens don't get discouraged. There are so many very nice and helpful people in the worldwide family of cruiser-sailors who will help you if you need it. The community in Levkas Marina are wonderful people and the city is is a great place to get lost in. The Greek Islands are a wonderful, safe place to to enjoy sailing. Visit Kalamos and order a Ravani for pudding. It's simple stuff but it's very nice. My favourite. Fair winds. John & Carol. PS You don't need to be living in the marina to enjoy it's services, (bars).
