I fostered a 20 year old female for 8 months. She had a huge personality, sense of humor. You MUST parrot proof your house. She could open doors with her beak, if they were not closed completely. She could hang upside down like a bat and liked to crawl into tight spaces. I fed her the Blessings brand nectar and mixed it with Papaya. If she did not get the 3-4 hours per day of full attention (not hanging around but actual interaction) she would come after my feet and attack my shoes or bare toes. Thank you for being responsible and telling people how much care Lories need.

Anyone here from Hideaki's Gumi-chan bird, should watch and learn from this how NOT to own these lorries. My fear is that too many ppl will see how cute or fun red Gumi is, yet fail to predict how difficult it is to commit to such parrots. Do NOT get one just bc you like the Gumi!

I honestly question anyone who watches Gumi and thinks that's an easy bird to raise. He's relentless. Constantly screaming for attention, and while he is cute, he is constant. Getting 5 or so minutes of Wues at your own pace is refreshing. Getting constant random noises and screeches is anything but.

Hideaki is a very experienced bird owner that makes owning Gumi look like a fun loving and easy time. Make no mistake, they require an expert level of care and can fall into poor health conditions if not cared for properly

Only experienced bird handler should adopt or "own" a Lory. Lories require special care, a flight cage and space to play. The nectar diet causes them to poop often.
@mehere8038
@mehere8038 Жыл бұрын
agreed & you also really need to get 2. 1 on it's own is very challenging, 2 at least look after each other's needs quite well. Still needs a certain personality & experience from the "owner" & a LOT of time & commitment, but 2 will play together & preen each other & have as much energy as each other, so amuse each other quite well & "often" is an understatement on the poop! (or rather sticky liquid squirt) & it's not just about frequency, it's about content & how they do it too. One of mine isn't too bad, the other is just a ratbag with hers! Both rescues, she was in a tiny cage, so I think that's probably why she figured out how to poop sideways so that her poop would always land outside her cage. Nowadays she does one better, I always have a small door open on the cage, so anytime she wants to poop, she climbs out, poops on MY floor instead of her own, then goes back into her cage again lol

It’s a nightmare trying to keep up cleaning. I have a friend in South Florida that breeds lorikeets. They are constantly pressure washing their aviaries. They also breed macaws and conures. But the lorikeets are the genuine poop machines! They are similar to toucans. My Caiques poop about every 15 minutes but it’s semi formed. This is a great example of how important it is to do research.❤️

nope, certainly not. In Australia there are significant numbers of eucalypts & other native trees with HUGE gumnuts & pollination designs specifically for lorikeet, noisy miner & wattle bird sized birds. Nectar & nectar eaters of all sizes are very common in Australia, not sure about other countries. There's no hummingbirds in Australia

re aggression & jealousy of other birds, best option is to get 2 of them, that way they can get that constant interaction they need from each other & they still have PLENTY of energy for their person too! I've got 2 rainbow lorikeet rescues, both with serious emotional issues, one refuses to allow touch, the other wants constant preening, but even with that, the 2 of them happily live in the same cage. They didn't before i got them, hence the emotional issues they have. I put them together & they've been much happier ever since. They're allowed out whenever they want to & I've offered them separate cages, but they only want to share. Lorikeets in the wild pair for life & are incredible close to their mate, often dying from grief when their mate dies. These really are a species that need to be kept with another of their species! No human can realistically give them what they want from their mate for their lifespan. The only realistic way to give them what they need is with a second bird of their species (or similar species of lorikeet)
