Honestly I'd say they are the best apartment birds you could ever own. My favorite thing my Pionus does is runs under my bed and gets just out of my reach and says, "come on" over and over. The only negative my thing mine does is she will puke on my big toe if I'm not watching. I feel like she thinks it's her baby.

I’m thinking my girl is actually a boy! Got her sexed but she’s quite the talker and not gonna lie, not the quietest lol I love how she just wants to hang out, most affection i can give her is helping with her pin feathers. She’s shy with new people for sure and that’s when she’ll let you know how she’s feeling. But after years of research and waiting, I couldn’t have made a better choice of first bird! Love my girl

I've had a white cap named Gina for about ten years now, and I adore her - though she's definitely a one-person bird. She likes hanging out with me, and she actually really likes scritches, and often decides to groom the back of my head. Admittedly, she's at best aloof with almost everyone else though. She accepts my dad if need be, but despite my mother's best efforts, she's never warmed up to my mother. Gina sees her as competition for my attention I think, and she tries to take out the competition. Also really hated my poor aunt on sight, who I guess looks too much like my mother for Gina's liking. Pionus parrots also have this quirk where they make wheezing noises when they're excited or agitated, and it scares the ever-loving Hell out of you at first because it sounds like they're having an asthma attack or something. At my parents' place, she'll make occasional contact calls with the birds in the living room. She stays in my room when I visit, because the birds in the living room are dusty species and pionus parrots don't deal very well with dust. She also went through a phase where she'd wake me up in the morning by repeatedly flinging a metal toy against the side of her cage until I got up. Apart from that though, she's very quiet; she'd be fine in an apartment. She speaks a little bit, but as you say, her voice isn't very clear. Like many birds, one of her favourite games is the 'clam right up and don't make so much as a single peep, so that your person looks like an idiot after someone asks if you can talk and your person says yes' game. I travel a lot by car, and she's a great traveller; I never have to struggle to convince her to get into the travel cage. She does have a habit of killing time in the car by sharpening her claws, which isn't my favourite of her hobbies... This might be more of a Gina thing than a pionus thing, but even by parrot standards, she's extremely suspicious of any new foods. Took me a full year to get her to try an almond, and another year to try a piece of walnut. She surprised me by finally trying pasta/fruit/vegetables after like EIGHT YEARS! For years, she'd lean away from any new food I tried to give her, and she'd try to fool me into thinking she'd had a bite by making exaggerated chewing motions.

I have three other birds I'm not new to birds but this is my dream bird I love your videos!! If people were able to rent parrots for six months to see if they wanted to spend 50 years with them, 90% would end up with a nice species like this. Of course, that wouldn't be ethical to rent parrots, but it would probably result in fewer parrots being abandoned. The novelty of any exotic pet wears off very quickly. Good video!

I love your reviews. Been wanting a pet bird for a long time. I love birds and use to volunteer at a rescue center just so I could be around the owls and falcons. As a kid I had those cute little budgie birds and loved them cause I could have a whole flock of them without it being super loud, too much maintenance, and I could leave them alone all day since they had each other. Now I’m looking into a bigger bird. These reviews are helping me sort it out before I decide on a 30+ year relationship with one of these amazing animals and I’m leaning a lot on this breed

We had a white cap and loved him so much that when he died, we waited nine months to get a new baby from a reputable breeder. At that time a white cap was under $1,000 but we ended up getting a more rare variant (dusky) and paid $1,400 but he fits your description to a tee. We live in a high rise apartment.

1. Pionus are New World parrots so they are not dusty 2. Yes they can be trained. Everyday when my wife comes home, my BW Pionus flies over to greet her. It's super cute. 3. Generally I recommend people to get 1 parrot so the bird will get attached to the owner as opposed to getting attached to another bird. Unless you have a lot of time to spend with each bird to keep the friendliness up.

My significant other wants a bird again. They had a caique as a kid, but their mom got rid of the bird and broke their heart. They love their intelligence and playfulness. Contrary, I see them as a huge commitment. And responsibility and I can't see it being a responsible option as a twenty something. I have no idea where I'll be when I'm 50 ish. I guess rescue is an option but even ten years seems like too much for an animal who can be as intelligent two year old. Pionus seems to be a good options given their indecent streak.

Something I've actually been working on for a while! Now that breeding season is coming to an end, I'll be creating some new types of content like this. What kind of things would you like to see the most?

That would be great to do bird toys, cages and stand reviews etc. Also talking about the benefits of having foraging toys to keep pet birds mentally engaged and which ones you'd recommend to new bird owners. I'd keep it species specific because they have different needs which will help new owners know what they can do to keep their feathered companion happy and healthy. 😄

I am absolutely sold on a pionus of some kind (maybe not maximilian's since they're so big), but I can't find any breeders anywhere in Texas. There's one group in Austin, JC Aviary, but their birds are $4800! I went to a shop and played with a couple green cheek conures and they seemed like a good fit as well, so that will probably be my first bird. Another shop has senegals on occasion which are a type of poicephalus from my understanding - are they similar in temperament? I'm pretty bummed I can't find a reasonable price on a pionus. Any trustworthy online retailers someone could recommend? Facebook groups are full of obvious scammers lol

How is an Eclectus boring?? I used to have a female and she talked. She was super cool! - I know this is a Pionus video but his comment on Pionus not being boring as boring as an Eclectus, is what I'm referring to

For some reason...my white capped is not so friendly to anyone else but me, regardless of being hand raised around many people...he will literally bite EVERYONE except me...also noise wise ....he is pretty noisy aswell ... especially when im standing too far away from him...he likes to mumble on and on and on to himself when i am nearby though...he gets all aggressive if anyone even comes near me while im holding him... think he might be broken or something.

I can def talk about it, just not much to say. Tons of breeders have been retiring and a lot of their stock is getting illegally exported out of the USA and into Mexico.
