I love your videos and look forward to them coming out. You have a positive vibe even when you're having planty issues. I've been struggling with spider mites since March/April. I've tried lady bugs (which worked for a couple of weeks), neem spray, beneficial mites, and now I'm using a spray recipe from a Liquid Dirt video. I think it is finally working. We'll see. I sure hope it does work. Good luck on the war of the bugs. 😅

Great tip about the misting. I get spider mites once in a while but right now mostly I have mealy bugs. So I’m definitely using a lot of rubbing alcohol. It wouldn’t hurt to start misting everything like you do, to prevent the spider mites from going crazy in the dry wintertime.

Hey Kaitlyn, so happy to see your Ficus triangularis variegatas doing well. What might be possible is, that Ficus has this behavior to react the way it does bc of low humidity and infrequent watering and change in the length of daylight and heat . A plant lamp could counter that also and what you already do with your setup . Additionally you could look up the data like where does this species live and what the annual environmental circumstances are. Like if you know how they grow in their native Habitat and imitate that , you could explore so much new territories of knowledge. The best sucess for you on your journey . Big hug for your entire family. Love ❤ Matt

Thanks for the update. 😊 Wicking, self-watering pots work very well for me. I put a reminder on the cell phone calendar to check the water level and top it off every week. You’re lucky that you can take your plants outside and hose them off when the pest problem becomes overwhelming. If the alcohol is drying the leaves too much, try alternating it with dish soap. The oils in the soap also kill most pests. Good luck. 🍀 😺✌️

thanks so much for the suggestions! 🥰💜✨ I love being able to wash them outside! but sometimes I do wonder if they pick up random pests from out there..but then I’m not sure if I’m just being paranoid haha😅 thanks for watching I hope you’re having a great week!🌿💞😊

@@reallybigplant We live in very different climates, so I’m unsure about the pest issue outdoors, but I very rarely get them, although I did find praying mantises on some of my annuals this summer. Their eggs or larvae might have been a package deal when I bought the coleus. 🤔 I’ll let your husband decide the issue of paranoia. He knows you better than I do. 🤣 😸✌️

When I first got my VSOP, it was struggling, a LOT. It got spider mites, and wasn’t drying out quickly enough for the roots. I started misting it with that same mixture, and it not only solved the problem, but also was beneficial to my plant because the roots are so shallow. Also, it’s fun to have a routine that lets you baby your plants 😊 and I have the same ‘mister’ lol

I get that about being in a frustrating relationship with your plants. I used to have a ton more and then lost a ton of them in a massive bug infestation. The population has finally stabilized and I had a couple plants get bugs and I separated them so fast 😂 good to know about the misting!

I have found that the Ficus Triangularis is really easy to propagate in water. It was only a couple of weeks before the cuttings started growing roots. I don’t use a humidifier for mine, I have it in my bathroom which has a skylight and it’s doing great.

I bet the ficus leaves are burning from spraying and light! Considering those leaves are so delicate, thin and prone to crisping anyways, I’d probably spray them once the sun is down. ❤ good luck with the spider mites, I use this method too and it works!

Hi, my Ficus Triangularis was living inside and lost half its leaves, I thought it was a goner so I put it outside on my back patio and continued to water when completely dry. With in a week it was bursting with new leaves. She will live outside until winter comes then I will put her in my Milsbo cabinet for winter. Crossing my fingers when I bring her in she will be okay.🤞

I use Sacred Elements "Sacred Leaf Tonic" as my preventative mist/spray. It can be potent enough to be a pest killer if you mix it thick, but it also works as a leaf shine.

I used to add a piece of Flea collar to my vacuum bag to deal with any fleas that got sucked up. Maybe you could add a cotton ball with permethrin to help kill the spidermites that get sucked up? Not sure if it would help, but might be worth a shot.

I grow some of my Peperomias in bowls of water like that heart fern, and OH BOY have they been thirsty here in San Francisco the last month. I think maybe I didn't notice the heat as much (its our "summer" here) but it really increases evaporation and the plants' metabolism.

I feel plants that are more thirsty and likes staying moist. I would choose a more compact soil. Or a different substrates like pon. Or a non drainage pot with lecca at the bottom and soil mix on top. Also it reduces fungus gnats.

Two years ago I saved a croton from a severe spider mite infestation with misting. I googled homemade solutions I could make with whatever I had around the house. I ended up using a solution of water with a couple drops of rosemary oil and a very small amount of dish soap. It worked and I mist all my plants every once in a while and have never had spider mites since then. No idea if its the solution or the misting that got rid of the spider mites but I do it anyway.

Sorry to hear that your spider mite infestation is still going on. I have no advice for you as it is pretty humid where I live. Just one thing, you seem worried that vacuuming is increasing the spider mites. As a dog owner you are no doubt familiar with the new generation of flea killing insecticides like avermectin. These weren't developed until the nineties. Those of us afraid of killing our dogs and ourselves with their toxic predecessors (giving a flea bath once made me nearly pass out) used to put diatomaceous earth on the floors and then vacuum it up. DE is still around and you could put some in the canister of your vacuums which would kill any spider mites that survived the vaccum. Lots of luck, love to see your hair bright purple again.
@reallybigplant
@reallybigplant 10 ай бұрын
Oh that’s such a good idea to put the DE in the vacuum! Thanks so so much for sharing your experience!! 💜 So sorry you had a bad time with the flea bath though. Once when my dog had fleas I gave him a flea treatment and he got really sick from it-he seemed to be hallucinating and it was like he couldn’t see for a whole day, it was scary! and now I’m never using that stuff on him again Anyways i’m jealous of your humidity! Thanks for the encouragement, I hope you have a great planty week 😊🌿💞✨💜
