Mezzo-soprano Risë Stevens sings "Che puro ciel" (from act II of "Orfeo ed Euridice" by Christoph Willibald Gluck) on Columbia Masterworks record 71365-D, played on an EMG Mark Xb Oversize gramophone with a Meltrope III soundbox and a Burmese Colour Needle. Recorded September 21, 1941 in New York City.

Among the things I‘ve always admired about Risë Stevens are the warm, seductive beauty of her voice, her energy and the charisma she had… I loved her as Carmen and Dalila (Delilah), but I‘ve never heard her singing Gluck‘s music before - an omission that I‘m glad I can make up for with this mesmerizing and compelling performance… ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you for the wonderful post! 🙏🍀 The sound quality is brilliant, too! 👍

My grandmothers said Stevens was the most riveting Carmen she ever saw live.

@@BassetHoundTrio That‘s interesting! Because I once discovered that she was the most riveting Carmen I ever heard! When she sang the „Habanera“ (that was the first aria I listened to, then I wanted more) I thought: Wow, this woman (Carmen, not Risë, she’s a lady) means business! She was so determined, so ruthless in her personality, in her willingness to get whatever she wanted, her willingness to use EVERY and ANY means to achieve her goals… I was completely thrilled by her performance. And, as you know, I‘m a great fan of her voice, her timbre, too…

What a lovely record. I have come to the conclusion and sure other have as well that there is no 78 type recording that does not sound at its best unless played on an EMG.

I entirely agree!! Pure, natural sound - not artificially adjusted by electronics. I think the same when I pass the 4K television aisle - colors absurdly over saturated and over contrasted.
