With proper care, Cheaney shoes will give comfort, value and service over a considerable time. However, if after wear you wish to extend the life of your Cheaney shoes, we are able, because of the quality of the materials used in the original manufacturing process, to offer a full refurbishment service.
On arrival, the shoes are carefully assessed and placed on the original lasts. The soles and heels are removed, along with the welts and, if necessary, insoles. With skill and care, our craftsmen rebuild the shoe, using genuine components and reconstruct it to its original specifications.
It takes around eight working weeks to refurbish a pair of Cheaney shoes undergoing, as they do, many of the same process as when they were first made. New leather or rubber soles are fitted and stitched, using the traditional Goodyear welted process, prior to the heel being attached. Finally, the shoes are re-finished before being returned

Just received two of the three pairs of shoes I dropped off for refurbishment. It's so nice putting a pair of well broken in shoes back on knowing that I have a lot of wear left in them. They arrived back nicely boxed and on opening the box I was pleasantly surprised to see a shiny pair of shoes with the new commando soles and heals that I had requested. Whilst it's not a cheap service you get what you pay for these days and I can genuinely recommend this service. The only downside is I'm not allowed to buy any more until these three pairs wear out, and that could be a while. Five stars from me for service and quality. Thank you!

I have two pairs, they are fabulous quality. British workmanship at its best. I always use Saphir shoe cream for the leather. It is in a class of its own.

Surely its beneficial to retain the welt when refurbishing if its in good condition? Otherwise you're just punching holes into the shoe for no reason and decreasing its potential lifespan.

That surprises me. They don’t keep the welt.......

@@onldogdog2028 agreed, see my post on this very thread on this subject. It absolutely winds me up. Especially because good local cobblers will reuse the welt, but then cheaney will refuse to refurb the shoe when it's new welt time. It feels like a profit making exercise to me. Kill the shoes sooner so you'll buy more. I use a local artisan cobbler now, they can use the existing welt and then when needed, replace the welt too.

@@1061shrink1061 interesting, is it not possible to request the welt is retained? Does seem to negate the benefit, assume also if sent to an artisan cobbler they can potentially handwelt thus removing g the problem of the number of holes

@@rey_s90 I'd imagine it would be possible to demand that they re-use the existing welt. But common practice on all of them (cheaney, crockett, loake, alfred sargent) is to replace the welt. Madness really.

@@1061shrink1061 this is very disappointing I’d like to think I know a lot about shoes but this issue I’ve only been made aware of recently, these companies like to proudly boast about the longevity of their products but then cut corners like this. I saw on C&J own site it states they will repair up to 3/4 times. I’m actually unsure what to do with my own (I have all the brands U mentioned above) is it better to do say 1-2 resoles with manufacturer then after that stock with a good cobbler.

As with every single one of the main english producers, i have absolutely no idea why they insist on removing the welt for a refurb. The whole point of a goodyear welted sole, is to be able to replace the sole, WITHOUT replacing the welt, thereby extensing its longevity. This feels like a manufacturers way of manipulating the lifespan of the shoe and trying to lock you into using them exclusively for repairs. If you use a manufacturer for repairs, they tear out the welt every time, damaging the upper and meaning at best 5 ish resoles before the upper is too damaged to take a new welt. Then it's time for a new pair of shoes. or you take it to your local cobbler, and if they know what they're doing, they'll just replace the sole and re-stitch through the original welt. Which can be done 2-3 times before the welt is too perforated to take any more uses, at which point the welt can be replaced and the whole process starts again. This means a goodyear welted shoe should be capable of 16-20 refurbs. WHats worse is, none of the factories will refurb a shoe that has been re-soled by another cobbler even though they tear the entire shoe down anyway, and it makes absolutely no real difference to them. The more years I go through this with the likes of cheaney, crockett, alfred sargent and even gaziano & girling, the more i realise that for them it's about getting your money in the door and forcing you to replace the shoes as soon as possible. It has nothing whatsoever to do with longevity.

Thanks for this - you've made some interesting points. Maybe direct your thoughts to Kirby Alisson at The Hanger Project who offers shoe refurbishment. You could ask his thoughts and what exactly his cobler does and why.

No need to re-welt every time, but the manufacturer does not have the opportunity to examine the shoes beforehand, therefore has to quote for the worst case scenario, a complete refurb. There are many good shoe repairers out there that can carry out as good a repair as the manufacturers do at a far cheaper rate. Find yourself a good one and seek their advice.
@1061shrink1061
@1061shrink1061 3 жыл бұрын
@@geoffwhite6383 I'm well aware theres no need to do it every time, but they do anyway. I've been working with both manufacturers and independents for years. I tend to stick to independents these days. in theory if a manufacturer REFUSES to work on a shoe thats been worked on by a 3rd party, and they ALWAYS replace the welt, then surely they'd always know the condition of the shoe! Impossible for them to ever encounter a shoe where the welt has been re-used. PLenty good independents around here that can do nice customisation, on a choice of higher end soles (JR etc)
@kaikaichen
@kaikaichen 3 жыл бұрын
In addition to all your great points - if replacing a welt is necessary, a skilled cobbler will sew on the new welt *by hand* and run the stitch through the original holes while doing so. This in theory means the upper can last indefinitely.

I have at least two pairs that would need refurbishment, including one whose dainite sole has a hole.. If it's the same price all the same £110 last time I checked), one is better off waiting for the shoes to be really worn out, isn't one?

Good video. Brilliant service. I would love to use this service on some of my old Cheaney shoes but Cheaney won't refurbish shoes that have been re-soled by another cobbler sometime in the past. They should tell you that when you first buy the shoes. Such a shame because how else can you get still decent Cheaney shoes restored to near original Cheaney condition?

Cheaneys are nice! But not the “tk maxx” polished leather ones! Those were the only shoes I threw out almost new! P.s. any comments on it being “better” to find independent cobbler that does hand sewn soles for resoling only, due to fact that good year machine punch new holes (So not many resoles ) and hand sewing can use existing holes (So in theory unlimited resoles)? And for any other Key words being “good” cobbler and “resoling only” and use factory repairs for anything else?

It's not to difficult to use the same stitch holes using a Goodyear outsole stitching machine, the needle will follow the path of least resistance and follow the same holes if the stitch length is set correctly first.
