Daniel's comment about the Profile Gauge at 6:30 shows that some shoemakers are watching other shoe makers on Kirby's channel. Who knows what great innovations will come as a result of shoe makers "borrowing" other's techniques!

Must admit I was a little reluctant to watch a 20 minute video on shoe measurements. But it held my interest completely. I've seen you get shoe measurements else where but I believe this to be the most comprehensive to date. I like Daniel's comment about how a customer might like the way a pair of shoes looks but what counts how the look on the customer. 20 minutes really wasn't enough. Keep up the good work Kerby.

Thanks! Yes. These videos that are a part of our Lastmakers Series and are designed to be long, allowing the last maker to really get into the substance of how they measure. I increase the playback speed of these longer videos to 1.5 to 2.0x so I can work through them faster.

I fully understand the appeal (and not only from an asmr/relaxation perspective) of human craftsmanship, but taking measurements is one of those things that is indisputably better done by machines, both in terms of accuracy and efficiency.
@Broadpaw_Fox
@Broadpaw_Fox 4 жыл бұрын
While I will give you the efficiency point, but I disagree with accuracy point. With an experienced craftsman like this, he knows exactly where he wants measurements, and while taking them he can also get a 'feel' (literally) for the unmeasureables, things like a specific bone shape/protrusion, or something like that. Little things like that can make all the difference, and at this price point it should be as neat perfect as you can get. :)

Nice one Kirby, I have a really small foot size ,I wear size 5 UK , finding quality shoes in department stores has been impossible here in South Africa , perhaps going bespoke is my only option.

Bespoke or even MTM would give you a better fit, for sure. Not many companies are committed to stocking shoes as small as a Size 5. But most will be happy to make a pair as a special order item.

Hello Kirby, Fantastic video! I have possibly a silly question and I apologize in advance if it is, but I noticed during the video that he was referring to measurements in inches instead of using the metric system. You would think being from Europe that he would use the latter. Do all shoemakers tend to stick to the United States standard form of measurement or was he simply using inches so that as an American, it would be easier to understand for you? Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!
@Russell-1
@Russell-1 5 жыл бұрын
josh maley : The ‘inch’ is still very much alive in its original home here in the UK. This is especially true for certain crafts like tailoring, gunmaking & obviously shoemaking. We also travel in ‘miles’ not km. Regards Russell

I really enjoy these measurement videos. Thank you for filming and sharing them. I do have a question, though it might be silly, as I'm not well informed on bespoke garment/accessories. He took a single foot measurement from what I saw. Would it not be proper to take the same from the other foot as well? I, personally, have 2 feet that are not equal in their measure. Though not significant to the point of sideshow odd, my right foot would not fit well into a shoe made from measurements taken from my left. Was measurements taken from both feet and just not included in the video due to perceived redundancy?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. We did measurements for just one foot because of time... but Daniel would definitely measure both feet independently for bespoke shoes.

Hello Kirby, great video as always. I think my question is perfect to ask on a video about bespoke shoes: So a while ago I bought a pair of quite high quality shoes from a reputable shoemaker, however I went with a ready to wear service and not bespoke. My shoe size is usually an EU 42 (US 8,5) so that's what I ordered. Now the problem is that after a year of wearing them (it's also worth to mention that I take good care of my shoes, I use shoetrees, nourish them and I don't use them in wet weather without the use of a galosh), the sole started to loosen from the upper around the heel/mid part area. This has been the case with low quality shoes aswell, but in those situations I've blamed the quality of the shoe. My question is: Do you think the shoe is too tight? I believe that I have a pretty uneven distribution of my weight, it being on the outside of my feet which could lead to the shoe stretching in certain places. Should I go half a size bigger or could it just be bad luck and a problem in the construction? Thank you for your time!
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 5 жыл бұрын
Sadly, it is hard to really say without being able to see your shoe. A high-quality shoe shouldn't have this happen. You could send them into our Cobbler here in the United States and he could open them up to take a look at them. Or you should be able to send them back to the manufacturer... this sounds like a manufacturing defect, and they should replace them.
@jthepickle7
@jthepickle7 5 жыл бұрын
Keep your heels changed often. Once the heel over wears it pulls the whole shoe out, sole and all begin to wear with a 'warp'. Too, your heel might need to be bigger, more footprint - not taller, bigger.

I’d paint Kirby’s socks in a resin that hardens then carefully cut them off his feet. Then I’d reassemble the pieces into solid foot shapes and seal any gaps with silicone sealant to make two moulds. Finally I’d fill the moulds with plaster of Paris or concrete to make the lasts. Finally I’d get a big piece of leather and vacuum form it round the lasts to make the finished shoes. As a gratuity I’d supply the finished shoes with a pair of genuine walrus skin odor eaters that smell of rainbows.

Dear Kirby, I discovered your videos and learned to love them. They are informed and put much light on aspects that - I dare say - have plenty of improvement space for modern people. As a foreigner, I find my own language limitations frustrating. Therefore I dare make you a suggestion which you'll feel free to act upon or chose to ignore. It is about certain verbal mannerisms and repetitions that you are over-using. I am thinking of the expression "you know" or the "signature shirt" or whatever. One idea would be to have a look at the material or, if too busy, find someone else to do it for you, and censor un-necessary repetitions or whatever is not really working; as they are disruptive, it is not helping to pass the information. You already have plenty of filmed materials and this experience should be more convincing in terms of authenticity rather than clumsiness. Another thing I noticed, is that sometimes you seem to be condescending and this too feels inappropriate towards the audience; it may result in losing the interest to follow your videos. It is a lot of work and, in order to make them shine, your videos would require a little more preparation and post-processing. Best wishes, Valentin

Instead of painstakingly recording so many measurements, which could be error-prone, why don't shoe makers use silicone molds of the customers foot and then build the shoe around the mould. This shall be more accurate than the last.

It would be both more expensive and take longer. Also, a silicone casting cannot be a shoe last - those still need to be carved. The last is the shape needed for the internal of the shoe, not a copy of the foot. :)
