I used Osmocote by directly putting into soil without the capsule and was great. The leaves stopped turning yellow about 2 weeks. Now I'm ready to order gel capsules to make my own root tabs to save money. If it does not work for you, you can always use Osmocote for your garden instead. I recommend careful experimentation as can potentially save you lots of money if you are into live aquatic plants. Consider do more water changes first couple weeks to prevent algae bloom.

@@BentleyPascoe Yes to be honest If used in moderation Osmocote can be great. Denis Wong uses individual balls instead of a whole capsule and this is what I do. On another note the commercial gel capsules must also use a generic slow release fertilizer. Have you seen Tropica's nutrition tabs? tropica.com/en/plant-care/nutrition-capsules/ Look familiar?

I think I just found out why I keep getting ammonia spikes. Even Easy Green has given me problems, but that only because I started using it too soon after planting, and some of my root tabs found their way to the surface of the substrate and released ammonia into the water.

I'm starting a new tank and I bought a lot of tissue culture plants. I was wondering, if I'm using your lasagna substrate method, should I still be using root tabs and liquid fertilizer? I have some Seachem tabs and Co-op's Easy Green. Thanks again for the information!
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 2 жыл бұрын
With tissue cultures since you're starting pretty fresh, just do root tabs. For the first few weeks you should be okay with just those, but as you start seeing those tissue cultures begin to grow, test your water and if you don't have nitrates at a small amount of liquid fertilizer to the water column so that they can feed off of that as well. Most tissue culture plants do a really good job of feeding from the roots from the start so I would start with that to help get them that initial boost. And then as you see that new growth coming in and then we getting to get some height then look to add some to your water column.

i have to overhaul my tank every month. soooo much debris in my substrate. 5 gal, pebble bottom about 1 " deep, 3 ottos, 5 neons, 2 ramshorns that hitch hiked in on a plant, have a java fern on a lava rock, a small piece of wisteria floating, and a crypt wedtii that has fully converted and growing pretty good. i planted it into a 2" terracotta pot with a root tab and the pebbles off the bottom. i figure it would be easier than unplanting and replanting it every 3-4 weeks. so, yeah, im new, but watch a lot of videos for as much info i can find. well, reliable sources like Aquar. coop, kg tropicals, etc. i haven't seen anyone tell me i couldn't plant it like that. will the roots rot, or will it be ok? also, trimming the last few old leaves off, i found "seedlings", 4, i want to grow them out, but how?

nearly any root tab will do the trick, but something made with a red clay base will help give a little extra iron, but honestly this is pretty negligible. I personally have used a BUNCH of different tabs and in the end I just use what is easiest for me personally to get into my substrate. Aquarium Co-Op, Seachem Flourish Tabs, NilocG Thrive tabs, they're all good options and there's a ton more.

Is there any proof that osmocote has “terrestrial” fertilizer that are some how more harmful then what is used in an aquarium. From what I can tell it has nitrate which isn’t that harmful and ammonium which is the less toxic form of ammonia.
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 3 жыл бұрын
So I'm simplifying some here, but if we want to be technical, the nutrients we normally use for aquarium fertilizer tend to be things like potassium nitrate whereas osmocote uses ammonium nitrate as its primary nitrogen source. Osmocote more specifically uses several ammonium compounds, which with most planted tanks where the pH tends to be lower and water tends to be softer - as this benefits plant growth and color, can lead to dangerous levels of ammonium or, more importantly cause an overload of nitrite as the bacteria that eats ammonia and ammonium forms far faster than the nitrite eating bacteria within the nitrogen cycle. Both ammonia and ammonium come up in the ammonia testing we commonly do, so for some simplification, its how I presented this. I suppose one could blindly scream "that's inaccurate!" but there's still a very palpable risk. A person who follows the channel has done a bunch of testing with osmocote and different depths of substrate, all of which produced noticeable increased levels on his API liquid test kit for ammonia and nitrite to potentially toxic levels for fish. To me, the risk is not worth fighting over semantics, but if you have success with it and like it - you'll have your own view based on personal experience.
