Cheap and easy way to measure string height on a ukulele.

Mike wants to know how to check the string height at the 12th fret.
There are string action rulers that can be purchased on eBay or Amazon. In this video I show a way to use a printable ruler to measure string height. This method works best for me and I hope you will find it useful.

I still think the action at the 1st fret is more important than the 12th fret, as it impacts all the chords that people commonly play. I do like the “bars” of a string action ruler, which helps me to track those fraction of a millimeter when it comes to string action.

I too think the action at the first fret is the most important, since around there is where we will be playing beginner chords. What is good low action on the first fret?

You'll have to check with UkeStuff on that. I very seldom concern myself with string height since the kinds of ukes you and I buy all come set up the exact same way. Only if there is a problem, like someone has been messing with the uke nut or saddle might there be difficulty. Or, if you bought a uke from lousy uke maker. Of all the hundreds of ukuleles I've seen in the past several years, only a couple can I remember coming with strings too high or low. Once a Kala came to me with strings so low they buzzed. Once a uke came to me from Hawaii with the strings factory set too high. Once a Glarry tenor ukulele came with the strings flat on the fretboard.

I am Goodreads by to use a feeler gauge set, being an ex mechanic, I have a set or two. I will have to two or more blades to span the distance from the fret to the bottom of the string, and then add them together.

Hi does the stings on a Kala ka-b rise up on the saddle, mine is higher back there and front seems lower?

That sounds right to me. The important measurement is on the 12th fret.

I have an app on my phone which measures mililmetres and I measure string height with a caliper for my violin, I cut my own bridges and always prefer a string height of 3mm my brand new concert Ukulele is blessed with a string heigh if 5mm so I will be making myself busy filing. Is there a way to save ukulele strings by carefully untying them, as opposed to cutting them? I am hoping to save the strings! I have new strings on order in case this is not possible, just in case! Many thanks

You can try using strings over, as you say, by carefully unwinding them. I imagine in most cases this would be a big bother to do and will seldom be successful. My string economy is in seldom changing strings at all unless I have a good reason to. String height on your new uke is unusually high. I've never seen that before. Rich
